Virginia and Truckee Locomotives and the California State Railroad Museum
As part of the 2019 National Narrow Gauge Convention, we went to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento to see their 3 Virginia and Truckee Locomotives.AND we went to Virginia City to ride the V and T.
We also visited the site of the V and T shops in Carson City and take a look at the other surviving V and T locomotives. As well as a glimpse of the models offered of these engines in HO scale and O scale.
From the web:
Gold was discovered in Nevada (then western Utah Territory) in spring 1850, by a company of Mormon emigrants on their way to the California Gold Rush. These early travelers only lingered in Nevada until they could cross the Sierras. By 1858 prospectors were soon permanently camping in the area around what is now Virginia City In 1859, gold was found in outcroppings in the hills and canyons just outside what is now Virginia City. Among the gold ore in these outcroppings were bluish chunks of silver ore which clogged the rockers. Silver was not recognized in this form, so initially, it was overlooked in favor of the gold, and later found to be quite valuable. This was the first of the silver from what came to be called the Comstock Lode.
Initially, the Comstock Lode was a boon for the Virginia City area, as the city grew to over 25,000 inhabitants at its height, and was among the largest and wealthiest towns in the West However, from the beginning, the costs to transport Comstock ore to the mills from points on the Lode (as well, to return with wood and lumber to supply the mines) became so great that many mines were closed and only the higher quality ores were worth processing in the mines that stayed open.
There were many propositions starting as early as 1861 for railroads to service the area and decrease costs. Sharon eventually (with the addition of $500,000 in county bonds to move the railroad), envisioned a railroad to run from Virginia City through Gold Hill where the first of the Comstock Lode was mined, passing the mills along the river, ending at the state capital, Carson City. When finished, this route would cover 21 miles, descend 1,575 feet of elevation and have so many curves as to make 17 full circles in the thirteen and a half miles from the river to Virginia City.

Nevada State Railroad Museum -- Virginia & Truckee History
In this video we see the #8 pulling three historical Virginia & Truckee cars. This is the fourth excerpt from my Living Steam HD video, at livingsteam.com.
The #8 is not from the V&T, but the cars are. #57 Wrecking car has been converted to pull passengers, the #10 passenger coach is an original V&T passenger car, and the Nevada Copper Belt caboose #3 was bought by the V&T in 1947 and renumbered as the #24. In the middle of this clip you'll see historic photos of the #57 and #24 as they were on the Virginia and Truckee until the end of the line in 1950.
Thanks for watching Living Steam!

Virginia & Truckee Railroad - May 24, 2014
I ended my spring road trip at Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day weekend. Tired of donating cash to Mr. Harrah, I traveled down the hill to Carson City and Virginia City to catch the opening day of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad season. In Virginia City I shot No. 29 assembling its train in preparation for the short trip to Gold Hill where I also shot it as it backed down from Virginia City and returned. At Gold Hill I also shot the excursion from Carson City headed by McCloud River Railroad No. 18 as it pulled hard upgrade to Virginia City.
Ride The Rails Up And Over Donner Pass From Colfax To Truckee, CA (Hi-def and 3-D enabled)
This Google Earth video follows the route that was originally laid out by the Central Pacific Railroad in the early 1860's. Be aware that in Google Earth, man-made objects, including infrastructure, follow the contour of the landscape. This accounts for the roller coaster appearance of the railroad tracks. Our train is traveling at 75 mph. The camera is about 15 meters above the ground. You'll be able to see how the railroad winds its way through the mountains from west to east. The builders of Interstate 80 followed the railroad's lead in many areas; a testament to the forward-thinking engineering of the mid 19th century. Nearly all of the route has been double-tracked since these photos were taken. Enjoy the ride.

Living Steam: Virginia & Truckee Railroad - Early History
This is the first few minutes from a DVD, Living Steam, that shows a day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with Lee Hobold, Chris DeWitt and Kevin Owens firing up the Inyo. I made it back around 2007. (written by Jim Lohse)
It shows some historical documents and photos from the Nevada Historical Society collection at UNR. To me, the most interesting part was all the big names that had something to do with the early V&T railroad: Hopkins, McNally, Huntington, Crocker, and of course, Mills and Sharon.
The closing image of the modern-day Inyo was shot early on the day in 2007 that I shot the footage for the Living Steam DVD.

As #29 departs Eastgate, she begins the 1st run of the 2019 operating season.
California Zephyr Truckee to Colfax
This shows the return trip from Truckee to Colfax on March 28, 2012. There was considerable snowfall the night of the 27th as you can see. Because of a disabled train on the right hand track, the train was diverted to the left side track. This gave a much better view of Cape Horn and the American River Canyon than if we had stayed on the right track. The informative comments are thanks to volunteers from the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. Here are a few technical details for those interested. I used a Panasonic HDC-HS700 in 1080/60p mode. I mounted it on a small tripod on the tray table and pointed it out the window. I used auto-focus, the low OIS setting and a shutter of 1/500sec. I produced it as a MEPEG4 file at 60fps.
A Parade of Power at the Nevada State Railroad Museum - July 4th, 2016
During yet another excellent Fourth of July at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, three Beautifully restored vintage steam engines and a McKeen Motorcar were operational. Carson & Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Co. #1 The Glenbrook was under steam and shuttling back and forth between the Annex and the Wabuska Depot, coupled to an 1882 Carson & Colorado Railway flatcar, which in the coming months will be used as a trailer for giving rides behind the locomotive. This weekend was an excellent display for the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it is well worth a visit.

California Zephyr Colfax to Truckee
The California Zephyr from Emeryville CA to Chicago IL is one of the most scenic train rides in the US. The segment between Colfax and Truckee is where it crosses the Sierras over Donner Pass. I shot this video out the left side window looking north as we crossed the Sierras from Colfax to Truckee March 27, 2012. Informative commentary provided by volunteers from the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.
