Lunch Hour Lectures on Tour - 24 May 2018
Two Lunch Hour Lectures on Tour: click on the chapters below to access the two different talks and the Q&A.
Chapter 1: Wasps: the Neglected Darlings of the Insect World 0:02
By Dr Seirian Sumner, Reader in Behavioural Ecology, Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research, UCL
What’s a wasp? Wasps are much more than the yellow and black striped pesky picnic-botherers. Wasps are one of the most diverse groups of insects; they out number species of bees and wasps combined. Yet, they are the most maligned member of the insect world – hated and avoided. Bees get praise and attention for their good services as pollinators of our wild flowers and crops. In contrast, wasps are regarded as ‘pointless’. In fact, wasps perform a wealth of important ecosystem services as key predators of arthropod pest populations. Dr Sumner will explore the importance of wasps in keeping the pest of crops and the vectors of human disease at bay.
About the speaker:
Dr Seirian Sumner is a Reader in Behavioural Ecology at University College London’s Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research. She won a L’Oreal for Women in Science Award in 2007, Points of Light Award from the UK Prime Minister in 2016 for her contributions to society, ZSL Silver Medal in 2016 for her contributions to the public understanding of science, and Equality & Diversity Award from the British Ecological Society in 2017. She launched a citizen science project in 2017, the Big Wasp Survey, to help improve the image of wasps by engaging the public in surveying them. Aside from wasps, she is co-founder of the women in science outreach initiative Soapbox Science, and mum to three budding entomologists!
Chapter 2: Conservation 4.0 – Will robots take your job? 34:35
By Professor Kate Jones, Professor of Ecology and Biodiversity, Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research, Dept. Genetics, Evolution and Environment, UCL
Wild nature and natural ecosystems are declining rapidly as humans use more of the earth’s resources and change climate patterns. Thanks to new sensor technologies such as animal movement tags, camera traps and passive acoustic sensors and new ways of analysing these data with artificial intelligence, scientists studying the impact of anthropogenic change now have access to huge amounts of data about our changing environment and declining wildlife populations. Professor Jones argues that although these technologies will help us to better understand the natural world and to further engage people with their environment, they have the potential to be very disruptive and discusses whether we are really ready for Conservation 4.0!
About the speaker:
Professor of Ecology and Biodiversity at University College London’s Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research. Winner of the 2008 Philip Leverhulme Award for Outstanding Contributions to Zoology, Professor Jones will review some of the latest technological advances in sensing, analysing, monitoring, and responding to wildlife population declines, focusing on her own work with bioacoustics.

Panorama of Eiffel Tower 1900 - 1st Camera Tilt
Panorama of Eiffel Tower 1900 - 1st Camera Tilt
James H. White _ Thomas Edison
We see the base of the Eiffel Tower, with a crowd of people walking under it. Beyond, framed by the tower's arch, is the Palace of Electricity. It's the 1900 Paris Exposition. A few men stop to stare at the camera; then a woman turns and smiles. Slowly, the camera tilts and pans up the tower, nearly to the top, then slowly tilts back to street level. Men look at the camera. A man tips his hat, another smiles. A smiling young man approaches as if to do a flip in mid air. Someone shakes his hand.
Canadian-American filmmaker James H. White was one of the pioneers of early cinema, the man who filmed the famous short The Kiss (1896). Born in the Canadian Maritime province of Nova Scotia in 1872, he was a 22-year-old gramophone salesman when he went to work at a kinetescope operation in Boston in 1894. The film-viewing parlor was run by brothers Andrew M. and George C. Holland, entrepreneurs to whom Thomas A. Edison leased the commercial rights to exploit his invention. Though not a true motion picture projector, Edison's kinetoscope ran a strip of perforated film encased in a cabinet over a light source, which was viewed by a single individual through a viewing screen by means of a shutter. White and fellow Holland employee Charles Webster toured cities in the US with kinetoscopes, but White went back to peddling gramophones when the popularity of the kinetoscope declined as its novelty wore off.

Spanish Eyes - Engelbert Humperdinck (lyrics)
Blue Spanish eyes
Teardrops are falling from your Spanish eyes
Please, please don't cry
This is just adios and not goodbye
Soon I'll return
Bringing you all the love your heart can hold
Please say Si, si
Say you and your Spanish eyes will wait for me
Blue Spanish eyes
Prettiest eyes in all of Mexico
True Spanish eyes
Please smile at me once more before I go
Soon I'll return
Bringing you all the love your heart can hold
Please say Si, si
Say you and your Spanish eyes will wait for me
Say you and your Spanish eyes will wait for me

SUMMARY
=======
Liverpool () is a city in North West England, with an estimated population of 491,500 in 2017. Its metropolitan area is the fifth-largest in the UK, with a population of 2.24 million in 2011. The local authority is Liverpool City Council, the most populous local government district in the metropolitan county of Merseyside and the largest in the Liverpool City Region.
Liverpool is on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary, and historically lay within the ancient hundred of West Derby in the south west of the county of Lancashire. It became a borough in 1207 and a city in 1880. In 1889, it became a county borough independent of Lancashire. Its growth as a major port was paralleled by the expansion of the city throughout the Industrial Revolution. Along with handling general cargo, freight, raw materials such as coal and cotton, the city merchants were involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In the 19th century, it was a major port of departure for Irish and English emigrants to North America. Liverpool was home to both the Cunard and White Star Line, and was the port of registry of the ocean liner RMS Titanic, the RMS Lusitania, RMS Queen Mary and RMS Olympic.
The popularity of the Beatles and other music groups from the Merseybeat era contributes to Liverpool's status as a tourist destination. Liverpool is also the home of two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool and Everton, matches between the two being known as the Merseyside derby. The Grand National horse race takes place annually at Aintree Racecourse on the outskirts of the city.
The city celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007. In 2008, it was nominated as the annual European Capital of Culture together with Stavanger, Norway. Several areas of the city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2004. The Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City includes the Pier Head, Albert Dock, and William Brown Street. Liverpool's status as a port city has attracted a diverse population, which, historically, was drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly from Ireland and Wales. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.
Natives and residents of the city of Liverpool are referred to as Liverpudlians, and colloquially as Scousers, a reference to scouse, a form of stew. The word Scouse has also become synonymous with the Liverpool accent and dialect.

SUMMARY
=======
The home front of the United States in World War II supported the war effort in many ways, including a wide range of volunteer efforts and submitting to government-managed rationing and price controls. There was a general feeling of agreement that the sacrifices were for the national good for the duration [of the war].
The labor market changed radically. Peacetime conflicts with respect to race and labor took on a special dimension because of the pressure for national unity. The Hollywood film industry was important for propaganda. Every aspect of life from politics to personal savings changed when put on a wartime footing. This was achieved by tens of millions of workers moving from low to high productivity jobs in industrial centers. Millions of students, retirees, housewives, and unemployed moved into the active labor force. Hours worked increased as leisure activities declined sharply.
Gasoline, meat, and clothing were tightly rationed. Most families were allocated 3 US gallons (11 l; 2.5 imp gal) of gasoline a week, which sharply curtailed driving for any purpose. Production of most durable goods, like cars, new housing, vacuum cleaners, and kitchen appliances, was banned until the war ended. In industrial areas housing was in short supply as people doubled up and lived in cramped quarters. Prices and wages were controlled. Americans saved a high portion of their incomes, which led to renewed growth after the war.

SUMMARY
=======
Hamburg (English: ; German: [ˈhambʊɐ̯k] (listen); officially the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg; German: Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg) is the second-largest city in Germany, with a population of 1.8 million.
One of Germany's 16 federal states, it is surrounded by Schleswig-Holstein to the north and Lower Saxony to the south. The city's metropolitan region is home to more than five million people. Hamburg lies on the River Elbe and two of its tributaries, the River Alster and the River Bille.
The official name reflects Hamburg's history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League and a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. Before the 1871 Unification of Germany, it was a fully sovereign city state, and before 1919 formed a civic republic headed constitutionally by a class of hereditary grand burghers or Hanseaten. Beset by disasters such as the Great Fire of Hamburg, north Sea flood of 1962 and military conflicts including World War II bombing raids, the city has managed to recover and emerge wealthier after each catastrophe.
Hamburg is Europe's third-largest port. Major regional broadcasting firm NDR, the printing and publishing firm Gruner + Jahr and the newspapers Der Spiegel and Die Zeit are based in the city. Hamburg is the seat of Germany's oldest stock exchange and the world's oldest merchant bank, Berenberg Bank. Media, commercial, logistical, and industrial firms with significant locations in the city include multinationals Airbus, Blohm + Voss, Aurubis, Beiersdorf, and Unilever.
The city hosts specialists in world economics and international law, including consular and diplomatic missions as the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the EU-LAC Foundation, and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, multipartite international political conferences and summits such as Europe and China and the G20. Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and Angela Merkel, German chancellor since 2005, come from Hamburg.
The city is a major international and domestic tourist destination. It ranked 18th in the world for livability in 2016. The Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2015.Hamburg is a major European science, research, and education hub, with several universities and institutions. Among its most notable cultural venues are the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle concert halls. It gave birth to movements like Hamburger Schule and paved the way for bands including The Beatles. Hamburg is also known for several theatres and a variety of musical shows. St. Pauli's Reeperbahn is among the best-known European entertainment districts.

This film series explores many aspects of our society. To rethink what is possible in our world, we need to consider what kind of world we want to live in. Although we refer to it as a civilization, it is anything but civilized. Visions of global unity & fellowship have long inspired humanity, yet the social arrangements up to the present have largely failed to produce a peaceful and productive world. While we appear to be technically advanced, our values and behaviors are not. The possibility of an optimistic future is in stark contrast to our current social, economic, and environmental dilemmas. The Choice Is Ours includes interviews with notable scientists, media professionals, authors, and other thinkers exploring the difficulties we face.
Part I provides an introduction and overview of cultural & environmental conditions that are untenable for a sustainable world civilization. It explores the determinants of behavior to dispel the myth of “human nature” while demonstrating how the environment shapes behavior. The science of behavior is an important - yet largely missing - ingredient in our culture.
Part II questions the values, behaviors, and consequences of our social structures, and illustrates how our global monetary system is obsolete and increasingly insufficient to meet the needs of most people. Critical consideration of the banking, media, and criminal justice systems reveals these institutions for what they really are: tools of social control managed by the established political and economic elite. If we stay the present course, the familiar cycles of crime, economic booms & busts, war, and further environmental destruction are inevitable.
Part III explains the methods and potential of science. It proposes solutions that we can apply at present to eliminate the use of non-renewable sources of energy. It depicts the vision of The Venus Project to build an entirely new world from the ground up, a “redesign of the culture,” where all enjoy a high standard of living, free of servitude and debt, while also protecting the environment.
Part IV explains how it is not just architecture and a social structure that is in desperate need of change, but our values which have been handed down from centuries ago. They too need to be updated to our technological age, which has the potential to eliminate our scarcity-driven societies of today. Our problems are mostly of our own making, but we can still turn things around before the point of no return. It’s not too late for an optimistic outlook on the fantastic possibilities that lie before us.

The Venus Project proposes an alternative vision of what the future can be if we apply what we already know in order to achieve a sustainable new world civilization. It calls for a straightforward redesign of our culture in which the age-old inadequacies of war, poverty, hunger, debt, and unnecessary human suffering are viewed not only as avoidable but as totally unacceptable. Anything less will result in a continuation of the same catalog of problems inherent in today's world.

Howards End Audiobook by E. M. Forster | Full Audiobook | Part 1
The book is about three families in England at the beginning of the twentieth century. The three families represent different gradations of the Edwardian middle class: the Wilcoxes, who are rich capitalists with a fortune made in the Colonies; the half-German Schlegel siblings (Margaret, Tibby, and Helen), who represent the intellectual bourgeoisie and have a lot in common with the real-life Bloomsbury Group; and the Basts, a couple who are struggling members of the lower-middle class. The Schlegel sisters try to help the poor Basts and try to make the Wilcoxes less prejudiced. The motto of the book is Only connect...
