Trump UAE Golf Club Raises Questions
(3 Jan 2017) The decorative clock bearing the name of America's incoming 45th president has yet to start at the Trump International Golf Club in Dubai, but the developers behind the project already are counting the money they've made.
The 18-hole course is likely to be the first Trump-connected property to open after his 20 January inauguration as president, joining his organisation's projects stretching from Bali to Brazil.
It also encapsulates the host of worries of possible conflicts of interest circulating around a president who is very different from America's past leaders.
While the Oval Office has always been home to the wealthy, Donald Trump represents the first franchise president.
Could foreign governments pressure or please Trump through his international businesses?
Should projects bearing his name receive additional security?
And how close should his ties remain to business executives operating in areas with far different opinions about human rights and justice?
President-elect Trump has blurred the line between his public service role as the president-elect, what his transition team is doing and what his business operations are, said Scott Amey, General Counsel at the Project on Government Oversight.
That will only continue if he also has his children that operate in his administration and other children that are operating the businesses.
The Trump International Golf Club in Dubai - the sheikhdom in the United Arab Emirates home to a futuristic skyline crowned by the world's tallest building - is due to open in February and be managed by Trump Organisation employees.
The course sits along a road that begins near the sail-shaped Burj al-Arab luxury hotel and passes by a mall with its own artificial ski slope.
The luxury continues onto the par-71 Trump course, designed by American golf architect Gil Hanse, where wrinkled fairways lead to putting greens made smooth with silica sand brushed in between micro-blades of grass.
It is set inside Akoya, a massive housing development of 2,600 villas and 7,000 apartments developed by Dubai-based luxury real estate DAMAC Properties.
Another Trump-managed golf course is planned for another even larger DAMAC project under development further down the road.
Billionaire Hussain Sajwani, who founded DAMAC Properties in 2002, met Trump some 10 years ago and the two men had hit it off over their real estate experiences, said Niall McLoughlin, a senior vice president for communications and marketing at the firm.
Trump received between 1 million US dollars (USD) to 5 million USD from DAMAC, according to a Federal Election Committee report submitted in May.
It's unclear how much the contract will be worth once the golf course opens and starts operating.
McLoughlin declined to offer specific figures.
It is the first Trump venture in the Arab world.
His first proposed project in Dubai, a 62-story tower with state-backed developer Nakheel, became a victim of the sheikhdom's 2009 financial crisis.
By 2014, Trump knocked a golf ball down the fairway of what would become the golf course at Akoya.
Sajwani called Trump a great man during the tour, and DAMAC later designed some 100 Trump-branded villas at the property, selling from 5 million dirhams (1.3 million USD) to over 15 million dirhams (4 million USD).
With Trump set to be sworn in as president, security analysts have suggested properties bearing his name could be targets.
His campaign pledge calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the US, followed by his proposal to conduct extreme vetting of immigrants, also sparked regional anger.
The Trump logos on the golf course even came down for a short time.
Financial matters raise other questions.

Trump Sons Open Dubai Golf Course, Praise U.S. Ally
U.S. President Donald Trump’s eldest sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump were guests of honor at the opening of a Trump-branded golf course in Dubai on Saturday, the first Trump property project launched since their father’s inauguration.
Speaking on a stage in front of the clubhouse at the Trump International Golf Club Dubai, Donald Trump Jr. praised the development of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a close U.S. ally that is also a global trade, transport and tourism hub.
“To see the incredible vision Sheikh Mohammed has been able to put forward for this country is truly awe-inspiring,” he said, referring to UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum.
“As a developer, which lets us be somewhat artists at times, it is truly incredible to be part of that vision.”
A ceremony featuring fireworks and a classical music ensemble marked the opening of the project announced by the Trump Organisation and Dubai-listed developer DAMAC Properties in 2013.
The relationship between President Trump and Damac Chairman Hussain Sajwani came under scrutiny last month when then-President-elect Trump said without elaborating that he had turned down a $2-billion deal offered by Sajwani because he did not want to “take advantage.”
President Trump’s sons praised their close relationship with Sajwani in their remarks. Eric Trump said Sajwani was “a great friend” with a “truly amazing family.”
“We are going to have a lot of fun years together and this is just the beginning of those days,” Eric Trump said.
The Trump International Gulf Club Dubai is part of a 42 million square foot wider development known as DAMAC Hills, according to DAMAC. Sajwani said it was the first new golf course to open in the city in “many years.”
Trump has been criticized for not distancing himself enough from his family business, the Trump Organization, since he was elected president in November.
DAMAC pays a licensing fee to the Trump Organization to use the Trump brand.
Last month, before the inauguration, Trump announced that he would maintain ownership of his global business empire but had handed control to Donald Jr. and Eric while he is president.
The Trump organization would not enter into any new overseas deals while he is president, Trump adviser Sheri Dillon has said.
The Palm Trump International Hotel & Tower
The Palm Trump International Hotel & Tower was a proposed skyscraper hotel at the trunk of the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. It was a joint venture between the Trump Organization and Dubai-based Nakheel, a government-owned company, and was announced on October 5, 2005. The hotel was expected to be a 300-room hotel. Construction work was suspended indefinitely on this and other prestigious building projects throughout Dubai in late 2008, largely as a result of the global credit crunch. The project was officially cancelled by Nakheel in February 2011, and will probably be replaced by a shopping mall on Palm Jumeirah Island.
