Tsarskoye Selo – Planning of an Exhibition
Our collection and the exhibits presented in this exhibition are very important to us. We revere them, because they belonged to various emperors of Russia. These are their personal possessions. And that’s why these items are extremely precious. - Olga V. Taratynova Director, Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve, Russia

Catherine palace Екатерининский дворец - Tsarskoye Selo Царское Село
The Tsarskoye Selo palace and State Museum Preserve is a superb monument of world ranking architecture, garden and park design dating from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. A whole constellation of outstanding architects, sculptors and painters made the ideas of their crowned clients a reality here. Tsarskoye Selo is a cluster of very fine examples of Baroque and Classical architecture and it was also the first place in the Russian capital where interiors decorated in the Moderne (Art Nouveau) style appeared.
The compositional centre of the ensemble is the Catherine Palace – a splendid example of Russian Baroque. Visitors are enraptured by the sumptuous décor of the Great Hall and the Golden Enfilade of state rooms that includes the world famous Amber Room now returned to life. Today, as we enter the palace, we can sense the spirit of the times of Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine II and admire unique works of fine and applied art.
Tsarskoye Selo is also home to one of the finest creations of Classicism in architecture – the Alexander Palace. Passing through the rooms of the living apartments that are open to visitors, you can get an idea of the aesthetic preferences of the last members of the Romanov dynasty and view the Emperor’s State Study that was decorated in the Moderne style.
More than a hundred historical monuments are scattered across the Catherine and Alexander Parks that have a joint area of 300 hectares: there are grand palaces and intimate pavilions, bridges and marble monuments, and also exotic structures imitating Gothic, Turkish and Chinese architecture that invest little corners of the parks with a romantic atmosphere.

The Hanging Garden of the Small Hermitage. Building Reconstruction
In 1763 Catherine II tasked Yury Veldten with producing a design for a Hanging Garden. The garden was laid out in keeping with the classic rules for a regular park with paths to stroll on, neatly trimmed trees, parterres of flowerbeds, lawns and sculptures.
In the 1770s the appearance of the garden changed. A flower garden was laid out in the centre, while six-metre birch trees were planted along the edges.
In the 1840s, in the course of Vasily Stasov’s reconstruction of the Small Hermitage, changes were also made to the look of the garden. The central flower garden disappeared, with flowerbeds being left along each side. Blossoming trees were planted in such a way that the garden changed its colouring every month.
In the 1850s the architect Andrei Stakenschneider constructed an orangery out from the Northern Pavilion into the open part of the garden.
In the middle of this Winter Garden there was a marble fountain around which there were beds containing exotic trees, sculpture and bird cages. The balustrade of the balcony was entwined with ivy.
By 1925 the Winter Garden had fallen into disrepair and was dismantled.
In 1941 the siege-time vegetable plot was laid out in the Hanging Garden so that the museum staff could grow themselves food. In 1946 the restoration of the garden began. Lilacs were planted in it and flowerbeds were laid out on the lawns.
At the present time the Hanging Garden has been reconstructed back to the layout created by Stasov and Stakenschneider.

CATHERINE PALACE | BEST Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia
Today, Katie and I visited Catherine Palace just outside of St. Petersburg, Russia. It was an incredible day and one of the better palaces we've visited around the world. Extremely beautiful and opulent!
This palace was owned by Peter the Great, then Elizabeth the I, and then Catherine the Great!
The Amber Room was a highlight and very interesting to see. It has great significance in the history and the original room was stolen and never recovered.
We enjoyed touring the beautiful gold rooms and palace grounds today. Peterhof may have incredible fountains, but by comparison the palace itself at Catherine Palace is much more impressive!!
Make sure you buy your tickets in advance and likely join a group tour to keep things easy as this palace lines up for HOURS out front. It's not worth the wait if you can just walk in with a tour guide.
Stay tuned - tomorrow we head to Peterhof to compare the two palaces and grounds.

A. S. Pushkin Museum Preserve
Pushkin’s poetical motherland is considered to be Zakharovo and Viazemy estates near Moscow as he spent his childhood here. At these very places Pushkin saw the beauty of Russian nature, peasants’ ritual dances, heard folk songs, saw the life of rich and province upper class people for the first time. Here he formed his life outlook, began to write his first poems. It is the place of his formation as a national poet. Pushkin came back to these places at the most difficult periods of his life.
Nowadays there is the State historical and literary museum preserve of A.S. Pushkin at the territory of two estates. Coming to these places you can wander the ancient parks paths where the great poet walked as well as breathe this magic air and touch the dumb witnesses of the poet’s childhood – marvellous architecture monuments which are united in a whole XVI—XIX centuries palace and park ensemble: the Transfiguration church, belfry dated the end of XVI century, palace and two wings dated the XVIII century, household outbuildings, parks, ponds of the XVI—XIX centuries. In total there are more than 20 historical and cultural monuments on the territory of Viazemy.
These places are related to the key events if the Russian history: the Time of Troubles, Peter’s transformations, 1812 Patriotic War, Civil War and Great patriotic War. Boris Godunov, Lzhedmitriy I, Petr I, Pavel I, Kutuzov, Napoleon, Bagration, N.V. Gogol, L.N. Tolstoy, M. Tsvetaeva, A. Akhmatova and many other world known people came here.

Alexander III Russian Museum 3 Руски музей
The State Russian Museum (formerly the Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III) is the largest depository of Russian fine art in St Petersburg.
The museum was established on April 13, 1895, upon enthronement of Nicholas II to commemorate his father, Alexander III. Its original collection was composed of artworks taken from the Hermitage Museum, Alexander Palace, and the Imperial Academy of Arts. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, many private collections were nationalized and relocated to the Russian Museum. These included Kazimir Malevich's Black Square.
The main building of the museum is the Mikhailovsky Palace, a splendid Neoclassical residence of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich, erected in 1819-25 to a design by Carlo Rossi on Square of Arts in St Petersburg. Upon the death of the Grand Duke the residence was named after his wife as the Palace of the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, and became famous for its many theatrical presentations and balls.
Some of the halls of the palace retain the Italianate opulent interiors[1] of the former imperial residence. Other buildings assigned to the Russian museum include the Summer Palace of Peter I (1710--14), the Marble Palace of Count Orlov (1768--85), St Michael's Castle of Emperor Paul (1797-1801), and the Rastrelliesque Stroganov Palace on the Nevsky Prospekt (1752--54).The Ethnographic Department was originally set up in a building specially designed by Vladimir Svinyin in 1902[2]. The museum soon housed gifts received by Emperor's family from representatives of peoples inhabiting various regions of the Russian Empire. Further exhibits were purchased by Nicholas II and other members of his family as State financing was not enough to purchase new exhibits. In 1934, the Ethnographic Department was given the status of an independent museum: the Russian Museum of Ethnography.

The Catherine park is named in honor of the Empress Catherine I of Russia. It occupies an area of 107 hectares and consists of the regular Old Garden (1717–1720) and an English garden (1760–1796, architect Vasily Neyelov) separated by large ponds.
