Arkadi Monastery, Eleftherna Museum, Margarites (Pottery Workshop)
The excursion begins from Rethymno and our first stopis at the historic Arkadi Monastery, which gained international fame thanks to its involvement in the Cretan Revolt and its highlight in November 1866, when the Turkish troops led siege to the monastery where 700 women and children and 260 Cretan fighters were locked after the Abbot refused to surrender. After that, you will have the chance to be and take a tour at the new Eleftherna Museum, the first museum of archaeological site in Crete. At Eleftherna, which is declared as an archaeological landscape with natural beauty and archaeological zones, there aren’t only the findings that caused the interest of the international scientific community, but also the environment that coexists with the cultural heritage. When the tour at the museum is finished, we will visit Margarites village, which is unquestionably the most important pottery center of West Crete. In Margarites, the pottery workshop of Kavgalaki’s family “Tsikalario” functions for many decades. Here, in a traditional area of 2.000 m2, that you have the opportunity to explore, the family continues the art of the grandparents and combining the four elements of nature -soil, water, air and fire-, creates traditional jars and handmade traditional and contemporary pottery of high quality and aesthetic.

Crete | Margarites Village
Crete | Margarites Village. Margarites village is a small village in the foothills of Mount Psiloritis south of Rethymno with a view of the sea. It's one of several villages forming a clutch around the Margarites Gorge, a biodiverse canyon that has aroused international interest.
It's a short hike from the old houses and potteries of Margarites village to the Gorge, where paths have been laid out for you to admire rare flora and fauna in their natural habitat.
To get to Margarites village, take the main highway out of Rethymno for at least 10 kilometres, turning right at the sign, after which you pass through several villages, arriving at Margarites village after 10 or so kilometres. There's also a regular bus service from Rethymno, but it's not frequent.

Clay pottering on a wheel in Crete
High up in the foothills of mountain Psiloritis lays Margarites, Crete, where you'll find one of the best pottery courses in Europe for free. Have a look on the amazing skill this woman is demonstrating turning clay into a nice little jug - within seconds. She is using a potter's wheel that is controlled by a foot pedal. The village's people are very open, kind and sophisticated when it comes to work with clay and make pottery. Margarites is one of Crete's oldest pottery centres with a long history of clay making.

Monastery of Arkadi
|
The Arkadi Monastery situated on the island of Crete doesn't solely belong to this island; it belongs to Greece, Europe and to all five continents -- to the whole world.
It is one of the Eastern Orthodox Monasteries underlining the catholicity and universality of the Church. Each year the Monastery receives and hosts many visitors and pilgrims from all over the world, from distant civilizations. Here are blended many languages, cultures, traditions, history and polymorphism. Nothing from the above can impede the faith unity, the catholicity of the orthodox spirit, the universality of the ecclesiastical testimony.
The Arkadi Monastery has a unique natural beauty, a prestigious history, numerous legends deeply rooted in the time, heirlooms and thesaurus richness. Possibly because the old is livelier than the new, and the modern is often more mature than the aged. Each pilgrim and visitor feels something which is exclusively his, personal, original in his experiential and spiritual experience.
The aim of our website is for the visitor-pilgrim to reach this uniqueness of the Arkadi Monastery, to travel via the Internet, be informed, understand and visit it.
Welcome
Archimandrite Miron Kalaitzis
