Tsitsikamma Village Inn
Tsitsikamma Village Inn, located in the village of Storms River on the beautiful Garden Route, offers a unique form of accommodation. Most of our rooms are situated around a typical Village green. These buildings represent many of the different building styles that were to be found in the Cape Colony during the 1800s.
The De Oude Martha Restaurant serves hearty and delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Other popular on-site restaurants include the characterful Hunter's Pub and the informal Cafe Bacchus. Next door to the hotel, is the Marilyn's 60s Diner, where you'll enjoy a trip down memory lane with the vintage motorcycles, cars, memorabilia and a typical diner menu.
Our hotel is a great base from which to explore the natural attractions and adventure options of the region and there are many ways to do this from hiking trails, mountain biking and horse rides to tree-top canopy tours and bungee jumping. Between excursions, guests are welcome to relax around the sparkling swimming pool, visit the hair salon or entertain themselves in the games room. There is complimentary unlimited wi-fi internet access available throughout the hotel. In-room facilities include air-conditioning/heating, electrical blankets, television and a tea/coffee station.
The Hotel is renowned for its good food, old world charm and has been a favourite for many a year!
Waarom het jy spesifiek oor die Bosmense geskryf ?
Why did Dalene Matthee specifically wrote about the woodcutters in the Knysna Forest, there was many books written about the Knysna Forest by other writers and Dalene Matthee decided to write about the poor woodcutters because nobody gave credit to them.

Garden Route National Park -
Media release: 29 June 2016 - Navigating South Africa’s largest individual forests
The Knysna forests managed by the South African National Parks as part of its Garden Route National Park (GRNP) make up around 42,000 hectares of land across the coastal stretch from George to Tsitsikamma in the East. The forests which were formerly managed by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry include Farleigh, Diepwalle and Tsitsikamma are now managed under the GRNP for conservation. The forests were exploited prior to 1939 when the Government decided to close them to the woodcutters’ system. Between 1940 and 1964 the Government focused largely on plantations.
With an estimated 400 elephants walking the Knysna forest in 1876, over 280 species of birds and a population of woodcutters living in the Forest, how much can we learn from recorded and oral history?
The GRNP team worked closely with the Knysna Historical Society and other stakeholders to establish a historical route in one of SA’s largest individual forests. Through a self-drive route launched today (the 29th June 2016), visitors to the Garden Route can now drive to 10 marked historically significant locations in the Knysna forest. The route comes with a map of the 10 areas dubbed ‘rooted in time’. There are explicit signs at all 10 places detailing historical accounts at each stop.
The Knysna Historical Society’s Phillip Caveney, introduced various key players and events in recorded colonial history as: 1864-1868 Thomas Bain and the Uniondale Road, 1882 and the Deep Walls Forest, Sawmills at Deep Walls, James Henry Templeman, the Building of the Stone Cottage at Deep Walls, the Early occupants of the stone cottage, Oudebrandpad and the naming of the King Edward VII Tree and the South Western Railway.
Area Manager for Knysna, Johan de Klerk says this is the first of many products to be launched in Knysna. The GRNP team is planning to facilitate a workshop with various stakeholders including the Knysna Historical Society, the George Historical Society, the National Heritage Council (NHC), the National Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), tertiary institutions and individual researchers to include African history in existing recorded work. ‘This is a big project to include input from various role players.’
This is the first leg of a bigger route to be launched in the GRNP to run from Wilderness to Knysna to Tsitsikamma. SANParks Head of Socio-economic development, Paul Daphne, says the organization prioritizes historical/ cultural assets because history accounts for happenings/ events in the past to be able to understand the future.
‘What is the understanding about the culture at the time? What were the values of the time? What can be deduced from evidence of machinery now protected as assets by SANParks? Most importantly: What lessons have emerged from back in time? Are the forests and its people able to coexist better today than they did back then?’

garden route is amazing
The Garden Route (Afrikaans: Tuinroete) is a stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa which extends from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape. The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. It includes towns such as Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley; with George, the Garden Route's largest city and main administrative centre.
It has an oceanic climate, with mild to warm summers, and mild to cool winters. It has the mildest climate in South Africa and the second mildest climate in the world, after Hawaii, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Temperatures rarely fall below 10°C in winter and rarely climb beyond 28°C in summer. Rain occurs year-round, with a slight peak in the spring months, brought by the humid sea-winds from the Indian Ocean rising and releasing their precipitation along the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains just inland of the coast.
The Route is sandwiched between the aforementioned mountains and the Indian Ocean. The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest and offer hiking trails and eco-tourism activities. Nearly 300 species of bird life are to be found in a variety of habitats ranging from fynbos to forest to wetlands.
Ten nature reserves embrace the varied ecosystems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals and a host of other marine life. Various bays along the Garden Route are nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale which go there to calve in the winter and spring (July to December).
The main arterial highway through The Garden Route in South Africa, a highlight on most visitors' itineraries, is the N2 stretch running from Heidelberg in the Southern Cape to Storms River Village on the Eastern Cape border.
While the Garden Route road is extremely scenic, it is the hidden destinations on its side roads that are the secret of this region.
That's probably how Oudtshoorn (the ostrich capital of the world) found its way onto the Garden Route. In reality, both early inhabitants and elephants have been crossing the Outeniqua Mountains from Oudtshoorn to the coast for many centuries.
Other surrounding towns well worth visiting include Calitzdorp, Sedgefield, The Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
A classic example of a new addition to the area is the Bramon Wine Farm just outside Plettenberg Bay, an empowerment project that's bringing wine making to the region.
Over time ancient woodcutter clans, fishermen, artists, businessmen and top chefs have all found their niches along the Garden Route in the Western Cape.
The Garden Route is also famous for its hardy fynbos floral kingdom, its secluded little bays and its year-round holiday frame of mind. And it's conveniently accessible from Cape Town.
Don't forget to look seawards to catch sight of southern right and humpback whales, bottlenose and common dolphins, and even killer whales that frolic close to shore, especially near Plettenberg Bay.
The Garden Route National Park, which weaves together the existing Tsitsikamma National Park's ancient forests and wild coastline with the Wilderness National Park via a chain of lakes and preserved sections of fynbos, is a fascinating mix of ecosystems. And don't forget to look out for the raucous cry and vivid scarlet wings of the Knysna turaco. The Garden Route includes one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline, the starting point of which is constantly contested as towns such as Witsand, Stilbaai and Albertinia join the route that winds its way for some 200 km via George, Wilderness, Sedgefield and Knysna on to Plettenberg Bay culminating in the Tstisikamma Forest - a fairyland of giant trees, ferns and bird life.
Mountains crowd close to a shoreline dotted with beaches and bays, and vividly coloured wild flowers delight the eye. Between Heidelberg and Storms River, the Garden Route runs parallel to a coastline featuring lakes, mountains, tall indigenous forests, amber -coloured rivers and golden beaches. Meandering trails are followed by hikers, the forests invite long, leisurely drives, and the lakes and rivers lend themselves to swimming boating and fishing. A wide range of leisure options, spectacular scenery and a mild climate guarantee an unforgettable holiday experience when visiting the Garden Route in South Africa.
The region provides a stirring study in contrasts. The delightful town of George, known as The Gateway to the Garden Route, graces a coastal plateau in a fertile area of lush greenery at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains.
