SIKKIM VLOG | Exploring Changu/Tsomgo Lake, Khecheopalri Lake and more! - Vlog #3 | North East India
Hey everyone! I recently went on a trip to Sikkim with my friend Shumnima (who is from Sikkim). This is the third vlog in my four part series of Sikkim. In this video, we explore places around Pelling, visit Khecheopalri Lake, Singshore Bridge (which is the second highest suspension bridge in Asia), go to a village called Uttarey, and witness the magnificent Kanchenjunga ranges from our room! Also, we went on a day trip to Changu / Tsomgo Lake, which was beyond beautiful, and dare I say it, seemed like the ‘Iceland of India’. Hope you enjoy this video :)

Tsomgo Lake | Sikkim, India | Wandering Minds
Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometres (25 mi) from the capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season. The lake surface reflects different colours with change of seasons and is held in great reverence by the local Sikkimese people. Buddhist monks prognosticated after studying the changing colours of the lake.
In Bhutia language the name Tsomgo is made of two words 'Tso' meaning lake and 'Mgo' meaning head which gives the literal meaning as source of the lake.

TSOMGO (CHANGU) LAKE | Sikkim | Changu Lake in January 2020 | Tsomgo Lake (Gangtok)
Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometers (25 mi) from the capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season.
This is one of the few and awesome high altitude lakes in India. The lake becomes doubly attractive with the reflections of the surrounding hills on the water. From Gangtok which is at 5410 ft, the altitude rises to about 10,000 ft in just 15 km. You can imagine how steep the gradient would be on this stretch of the road. It takes about 2 hours by car from Gangtok to reach the lake. The lake is filled with water of melting snow coming from the surrounding mountains. It's a one kilometer long oval shaped lake. The average depth is about 50-feet.
Tsomgo Lake gets its name from Bhutia language in which Tso implies for lake and Mgo represents head. This way, Tsomgo means lake water head or source of the water. This lake holds a great cultural and religious importance to people related to Bhutia community as they believe it to be a holy lake. Tsomgo Lake has several famous legends and myths that make it more interesting site for vacationers.
How to visit / Permit
Both Indians and foreign nationals can visit Tsomgo lake, however since this is a protected area, all require Protected Area Permits.
Tsomgo (Changu) Lake and Baba Mandir permits are issued at the Police Check Post. For foreigners it is also issued by Sikkim Tourism & Civil Aviation Department.
Nathula: Permit for Nathula Pass is issued only to Indians (foreigners are not allowed here). It's issued at Police Check Post as well as at Sikkim Tourism Department. Nathulla is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Tsongmo Lake and Baba Mandir which comes on the way to Nathulla are open on all the days though.
Permits are not available online. Permits can be get in Gangtok. Infact you need to keep a buffer day in Gangtok if you want to do the permit on your own.
**Your hotel can also mediate through a tour operator. You will require Photo Id proof (Passport or Voters Id Card) and two passport size photos each for the permit. Approach the tour operator one day in advance to get your permits ready for next morning. Effective September 2019, Aaadhar card is no longer accepted for issuing the permit.**
Taxi Fares
Most tourists combine visit of Tsomgo lake with Baba Mandir which is few kms away. A reserved large vehicle like Sumo costs about Rs. 4,000 for a round trip to Tsomgo and Baba Mandir, the shared vehicle rate is about Rs 500 per person. If you start by 8am, you should be back by 3pm. So both Tsomgo and Baba Mandir are covered as part of a day trip from Gangtok.
We took a package including Tsomgo Lake , Baba Mandir and Nathula pass which cost 1200 Rs Per head with permit.

East Sikkim Tourist Places
#sikkim, #silkroute, #tour, #travel, #mountain
The Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, and Baba Mandir are the top tourist attractions of East Sikkim. These destinations are not only the geographical treasures but also have historical and political significances.
Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass and Baba Mandir can be reached from Gangtok. For that first reach New Jalpaiguri railway station from any part of India. From NJP take a car to reach the capital city of the Indian State Sikkim – Gangtok.
From Gangtok you can book a package for Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass and Baba Mandir tour. Tsomgo and Baba Mandir are accessible every day but Nathula is permissible for only for five days in a week except Monday and Tuesday. To visit Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass and Baba Mandir you have to apply for the permission with a copy of any of your photo ID proof and two copies of recent passport size photographs. Your Hotel owner or your tour operator will collect all this on behalf of you and will get the required permit. The package charge may be around INR 750-1,000 (depending on the season) per head. Tsomgo is around 38 Km from Gangtok and Nathula Pass is 56 away from Gangtok.
On our trip we first go to Baba Mandir croosing the Changu Lake. We don’t stop here first and went up straight to Baba Mandir.
Baba Mandir
This is one of the most significant destinations of East Sikkim. It is a shrine of Baba Harbhajan Singh a soldier of the Indian Army who died close to the Nathula Pass. The Old Baba Mandir is located in the Kukup Valley(Bunker) where he was posted and the new one is built close to the Changu Lake. At around 56 Kms from Gangtok, this temple is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.
From Baba Mandir we move further upward to visit Nathula Pass.
NATHULA PASS :
Nathula is a high mountain pass in the Himalayas. It connects the Indian state of Sikkim with China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The pass is situated at an altitude of 14,140 ft above the sea level and it is a part of an offshoot of the ancient Silk Route. On the Indian side, the pass is 56 km east of Gangtok, the capital city of Indian state of Sikkim. Only the citizens of India can visit the pass and that too after getting a permit from Gangtok.
On our way back to Gangtok, we visited Changu or Tsomgo Lake. We stopped here for a while and take a short walk around the lake.
Tsomgo Lake
Tsongmo or Changu Lake is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim located at an altitude of 12,400 ft. The word Tsongmo Lake means source of lake. It is a natural lake on top of mountains. The Lake is oval in shape, 1 Km long and fifteen meter deep. The lake freezes completely during winter.

The lake is surrounded by steep mountains which are covered with snow during winter. During summer the snow cover melts and forms the source for the lake.[1] The lake which remains frozen in winter season, sometimes extending up to May, receives an average annual precipitation of 1,183 millimetres (46.6 in) with temperatures recorded in the range of 0–25 °C (32–77 °F).
The lake is about 40 kilometres (25 mi) away from Gangtok on the Gangtok-Nathula highway.[3] Further, the road to Nathu La skirts the lake on the north side. The Chinese border crossing is only some 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east-northeast in a straight line, but some 18 kilometres (11 mi) by road.
As the lake is #located in a #restricted area it is essential for all Indians visiting the area to obtain permits. In case of foreign nationals special #permit is essential.[2]
Indian Postal Service released a commemorative stamp on the lake on 6 November 2006.

Baba Mandir its place of haven...............
Nathu La is one of the three open trading border posts between China and India; the others are Shipkila in Himachal Pradesh and Lipulekh (or Lipulech) at the trisection point of Uttarakhand–India, Nepal and China.[3] Sealed by India after the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Nathu La was re-opened in 2006 following numerous bilateral trade agreements. The opening of the pass shortens the travel distance to important Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the region and was expected to bolster the economy of the region by playing a key role in the growing Sino-Indian trade. However, trade is limited to specific types of goods and to specific days of the week.
