All about Aomori - Must see spots in Aomori | Japan Travel Guide
Area Characteristics
Aomori Prefecture which is at the northern tip of the main island of Honshu is surrounded on three sides by ocean and once you cross Tsugaru Strait, you will come to Hokkaido up north. It is one of Japan’s areas of heavy snowfall and even in the summer, it is rare for temperatures to go beyond 30 degrees Celsius. Beginning with the virgin forest expanse of Shirakami-Sanchi which has been recognized as a World Heritage site, the prefecture has many examples of nature including Lake Towada, the Hakkoda Mountains and the Shimokita Peninsula. The Seikan Tunnel which links Honshu with Hokkaido is the world’s 2nd longest tunnel next to Europe’s Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland.
Major Sites
Hirosaki Castle is one of the symbolic spots in Aomori. Between late April and early May, many visitors come and appreciate the cherry blossoms at the Hirosaki Sakura Festival held at Hirosaki Park. If you want to fully savor Mother Nature, then places such as Shirakami-Sanchi, Oirase Stream, Lake Towada and the Hakkoda Mountains are popular. The Aomori Nebuta Festival is held in August but the Nebuta Warasse Museum which is dedicated to nebuta floats is open all year round. There are also plenty of other sightseeing sites including Mt. Osore which is known as one of Japan’s 3 Great Sacred Grounds alongside Mt. Hiei and Mt. Koya, Furofushi Onsen which has an attractive open-air bath alongside the coast, the Sannai-Maruyama site which is the largest archaeological site from the Jomon Era, and the Aomori Museum of Art.
Food
One famous product in Aomori is its apples which boast the largest shipping rate in Japan. For regional cuisine, there is senbei jiru (rice cracker soup), hittsumi soup, and jappa jiru which is a fish dish. There are also other popular dishes such as kaiyaki miso which goes well with rice, maguro don, Towada barayaki which is known to be the soul food of Towada, and a clear soup with sea urchin and abalone known as ichigo ni.
Transportation
It’s common to head for Aomori Prefecture from Tokyo by Shinkansen (Bullet Train), so a ride on the Tohoku Shinkansen will take a minimum of 3 hours to reach Aomori Station. Driving through the prefecture by rental car is convenient.
Accommodations
There are accommodations available near Aomori Station which is a handy base for sightseeing, Hirosaki located near Shirakami-Sanchi, the Lake Towada vicinity, Hachinohe and other areas.

Oshu TABI ROMAN #09 Experiencing Nature on Location ~Koromogawa Furusato SHIZENJUKU~
【explanation】
“Little Forest,” a movie filmed in Koromogawa-ku, Oshu, will open nationwide in August.
The story is of a person who moves from the big city to a mountain village, changing her lifestyle to live on her own. The original story comes from a comic book of the same name.
Koromogawa-ku, Oshu-shi was deemed perfect by the author of the popular comic and filmdom to show living with nature.
The “Koromogawa Furusato SHIZENJUKU (nature school)” where one can experience contact with nature is located there.
【narration】
A press conference was held on June 8 concerning the film “Little Forest,” at Koromogawa Furusato SHIZENJUKU (nature school) in Oshu.
Ai Hashimoto has been cast in the leading role.
The original story comes from the comic book of the same name, by Daisuke Igarashi.
In the film, the main character leaves the big city to move to the mountain village of Koromogawa in Oshu to live on her own. The story tells of how she finds a new way of life.
Many extras were used on location in the tale of her interactions with Oshu residents.
When asked about her impression of the location, Ms. Hashimoto said, “I felt that it is tough to live in the midst of a harsh natural environment.”
The “Koromogawa Furusato SHIZENJUKU” in Koromogawa-ku, Oshu is a facility for experiencing nature that the author of the popular comic book and filmdom felt was perfect.
We would like to tell you about that introduction, as well as current events for inviting participants.
“The Furusato SHIZENJUKU includes six cottages, four bungalows, a study hall where you can enjoy cooking and crafts, and the former Omori Branch School for indoor recreation.”
In the Study Hall, you can make noodles and sausages, make wood crafts, and do dyeing, as well as catch char (a type of fish).
You can also borrow or rent cooking utensils, blankets and barbecue stoves. If you bring your own ingredients, you can fix a meal and sleep over.
“We have an upcoming event. This coming Saturday, July 5, we will have the ‘Little Harvest Festival in the Big Woods.’ Please come and join us.”
You can make and eat SUITON (flour dumplings boiled in soup), broil char with salt and MISO (soybean paste) rice balls while watching the fireflies.
The event costs 1,300 for adults and 700 for children elementary school age and under.
The deadline for applications is June 27. Call the Koromogawa Furusato SHIZENJUKU or the Koromogawa Regional Center for inquiries.

The Sea (Tsugaru)
In the northest part of Honshu, mainland of Japan, is the region called Tsugaru. You can feel the nature just as if handed down from the primitive ages of our planet. The scenery is beautiful but the sea is very fierce here. I tried expressing the nature of Tsugaru on the piano based on the video I took during the trip there in 2006.

Taiwan’s Neglected ‘Blue Highway’
Last Sunday our special report focused on the closure of the Suhua Highway during this year''s Dragon Boat Festival, which forced many stranded travelers to rely on sea transport to get home. The crisis led us to ask if there is untapped potential in the blue highway of the sea. With Taiwan''s earthquakes, typhoons and extreme weather events, could the nation''s 200 sea ports be the key to developing an alternative transport system? Let''s take a look in our Sunday Special Report. The ship won’t leave port for another hour. But many passengers are already lining up to wait at the desk, presenting their pre-printed tickets and personal documents for inspection. The complexity of the process stems from the “Maritime Transport Restriction” policy imposed on the ferry company by the government. The number of passengers and vehicles onboard must be reported to the Coast Guard Administration and the Taiwan International Ports Corporation before the ship can leave port.Prof. Chiau Wen-yanInstitute of Marine Affairs, NTOUOur sea-going procedures aren’t that simple or convenient. We’ve been saying this all along. It’s like Taiwan still has martial law on its coasts.Once passengers have passed the inspection and are ready to board, they reach another hurdle as they try to cross the gangway between the harbor and the ship’s stern. The harbor only has one gangway, so all the different vehicles as well as foot passengers have to wait their turn to board in batches.Liu Yao-tienFerry OfficerFerries were first introduced to Taiwan from Japan’s Tsugaru Strait. Their original port design incorporated boarding bridges, exactly like those used for boarding aircraft. Of course, the development of our ferry infrastructure in Taiwan has been slower. Not only is the boarding process time-consuming – the cost is hardly economical either. Foot passenger tickets start at NT$700, and tickets for small passenger vehicles cost NT$1,500.Kang Chih-yuFerry PassengerI’ll just take it this one time. It’s probably the price issue. It’s quite a big expense. The ferry company says the ship cost NT$2.2 billion, and the cost of fuel for a one-way trip from Su’ao to Hualien is NT$250,000. Every year since the ferry was launched in 2013, the company has suffered losses of at least NT$200 million.Hung Ching-tanFerry Company ChairmanOur Taiwanese ships spend more on fuel for our domestic routes than foreign ships do for their international voyages. The expenses are almost 20 percent higher, roughly 17 to 19 percent higher. This is a rather heavy burden on us as ship operators running domestic routes. After neglecting the ‘blue highways’ for years, the government sent ships into action during this year’s Dragon Boat Festival, when the Suhua Highway was cut off. Scholars believe that if the government systematically invested in complementary measures or shuttle systems for ports, they would find that sea transport is full of promise.Prof. Chiau Wen-yanInstitute of Marine Affairs, NTOUThe usage rate of Su’ao Port isn’t very high. If it was converted from a cargo port for sand and gravel to a passenger transport port, or even integrated into more logistical chains, it could become a port for both cargo and passengers with a regular voyage schedule. Then it could replace the Suhua Highway to a considerable extent. The need for rapid mass transportation options and a backup mechanism for surface routes is not the only issue. Following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011, all of Japan’s boats and ships were drafted into the emergency response. This could be seen as a warning sign for Taiwan.Fang Pen-qiangFerry Company RepresentativeThat earthquake also proved that there are no safe bridges and no safe railways anywhere on earth. There are only safe sea routes.Taiwan and Japan lie on the same earthquake belt. If the ‘blue highway’ is not properly developed, future maritime rescue operations will also be hampered.Prof. Lee Ker-TsungTransportation and Logistics Dept., FCUThe dangers of climate change are growing. The government as well as the public should be thinking of risk management. We should anticipate that in the near future, as soon as there are changes in the weather, every aspect of our lives will be affected, including transportation mechanisms. The professor’s words are a warning siren, and a reference to the concept of “National Resilience” which has recently been gaining attention.Prof. Chiau Wen-yanInstitute of Marine Affairs, NTOUWhat is “resilience”? It means being able to stand up to any catastrophe. It means you can foresee and take early precautions, so that when something happens you can adapt immediately. There has recently been heated debate over the railway construction component of the government’s proposed massive infrastructure project. But there’s no proposal for maritime transportation on the table. If a catastrophe occur...
