The well-preserved heritage sites of Yuen Long are a nostalgic reminder of a time when this modern town in the northwest New Territories was merely a humble market village.
Wedged between the residential and commercial developments, the centuries-old ancestral halls are windows into the lives of the New Territories’ early clan settlers and their cultural heritage that has formed the bedrock of Hong Kong.
The Ping Shan Heritage Trail takes you on a journey in a historical part of Hong Kong that has been populated by the Tang people since the late Yuan dynasty (1271–1368).
Hong Kong’s oldest pagoda, Tsui Shing Lau, is believed to have been built in 1486. The three-storey, green-bricked building is hexagonal and stands 13 metres high. The top floor of the pagoda is home to Fui Shing (‘Champion Star’), the deity responsible for success or failure in exams. There are auspicious Chinese sayings inscribed on each floor.

Lan Siu Fung (ลิงสิ่วฝูง; 정소봉; 靚少鳳), martial arts actor in Cantonese opera
This video clip is using 1940s Siam (Thailand) style Cantonese (ภาษา กวางตุ้ง), if you don't know Cantonese (ภาษา กวางตุ้ง), as it is Chinese society issue, only Chinese subtitle is available, sorry!
Lan Siu Fung (ลิงสิ่วฝูง; 정소봉; 靚少鳳, ? to 2nd April, 1954) has an original name as Mr. Law Suk-ming (หล่อซุกมิง; 라재명; 羅叔明), his family origin place is Tai Leung town (大良鎮), Shun Tak county (順德縣), Kwangtung province (廣東省), Republic of China (中華民國), his wealthy dad was an enthusiast about music and Cantonese opera, always to held various concerts to entertain friends, Lan Siu Fung (靚少鳳) touches opera arts when he was small, he studied in school in the morning; and studying Cantonese opera with Chi Lee Kui (千里駒) in the afternoon, he cross dress to perform on the stage with a stage name as “Siu Sheung Fung (小湘鳳)”; however, when he grow up, his voice became hummus throat, can not sing female voice any more; thus, he changed to use “Lan Siu Fung (靚少鳳)” as his new stage name, and played as a martial arts actor. Lan Siu Fung (靚少鳳) is a very handsome actor, audiences called him as “(衛玢璧人) = Adonis”, Sun Ma Tsz Tsang (新馬師曾) is his classmate, Lan Siu Fung (靚少鳳) is familiar with moderato (中板) in Cantonese opera songs.
In 1949, the Peking communist bandits usurped the mainland China, Lan Siu Fung (靚少鳳) escaped to Hong Kong, lived in an old building on the Queen’s Road East (皇后大道東), Sheung Wan (上環). As there was difficult to seek a chance to perform on the stage, he often liquors up when he was lost job, …! On 31st March, 1954 (Wednesday), Lan Siu Fung (靚少鳳) has got hemorrhagic stroke after drinking, he was sent to the Tung Wah Eastern Hospital (東華東院 @ 19 Eastern Hospital Road (東院道), So Kon Po (掃桿埔), Causeway Bay (銅鑼灣), Hong Kong), stayed for two days later, he passed away on 2nd April, 1954 (Friday)! The famous comedian Mr. Ma Tsz Tsang (馬師曾) sponsored a coffin for him, a funeral ceremony was held in the International Funeral Parlour (萬國殯儀館 in Wan Chai (灣仔)) on 3rd April, 1954 (Saturday), a few hundreds of Hong Kong residents went to see his funeral procession on the Lockhart Road (駱克道).
In Chinese (衛玢璧人) is used to describe a man who is charming and handsome, just like Adonis in English.
In ancient China, around 200 A.D. to 300 A.D., it was the era of the Chin dynasty (晉朝), Mr. Wei Fen (衛玢) was a very charming and handsome guy, when he went out to the streets, he was always surrounded by a lot of strange pedestrians, peoples came to see his good-looking appearance, some lustful women asked “Which family has such jade body guy (誰家璧人)?” However, Mr. Wei Fen (衛玢) was just living in this world for 27 years!

第二次世界大戰(WWII)後,由『中國健身會(China Gymnastic Association)』營運,它有三千多名會員(more than 3.000 members in 1950),辦事處設於九龍(Kowloon)油麻地(Yau Ma Tei)彌敦道(Nathan Road)門牌 377 號 之四樓(3th floor)。以竹杆(bamboo poles)及木板(planks)加建游泳棚(swimming shed),在游泳旺季(swimming peak season, such as summer and autumn)時,開放給公眾游泳,中華民國卅七年(1948年)8月29日(星期日)啟用,可惜僅營運三個泳季(1948 to 1950),由於赤禍漫延,北平共匪(Peking communist bandits)竊據大陸(mainland China),大批大陸(mainland China)難民(refugees)湧入香港(Hong Kong),他們趁華清池(Wah Ching Chee)關閉期間,拆卸盜竊游泳棚(swimming shed)的竹杆(bamboo poles)及木板(planks),並霸佔華清池(Wah Ching Chee)建成寮屋區(squatter area)居住。

This 200-year-old walled village consists of rows of symmetrical houses enclosed by a green brick wall. The gatehouse, shrines and some of the old houses are still standing. Part of the wall may be missing, but enough remains to give a feel for what a traditional Chinese walled village looked like.
