Game Arcades in Japan Japanology
In many places, arcades seem to have nearly, if not completely, vanished. Yet, in Japan, they continue to hang on.
As The Financial Times reports in a recent piece on Japanese arcades, there were 44,000 of them during their mid-1980s heyday. Today, the Japan Amusement Industry Association says there are 4,856 registered arcades across the country. There also another estimated 9,000 locales, each having under fifty machines.
Even though there are fewer arcades now than in decades past, new games and cabinets continue continue to hit game centers, such as Dissidia Final Fantasy, Pokken, and KanColle, a title so popular that it drew lines upon release.
apanese arcades not only hang on, but keep getting new games. Here’s why.
Arcade game makers own arcades.
Some of the biggest corporate arcades in Japan are from Sega, Namco, Taito, and Capcom. All of those companies are also game developers, so they’re able to churn out titles for their arcades, whether that’s Namcoland, Taito Station, Plaza Capcom, or Club Sega. Since they’ve already invested in the arcade locations as a business, they need content to keep attracting customers. This integrated system is instrumental for Japanese arcades’ survival.

Research on State of Constitution in Japan as Member of Global Society: Hajime Yamamoto
Title: Research on State of Constitution in Japan as Member of Global Society
Keio University, Law School, Yamamoto Research Lab
Professor Hajime Yamamoto
The research lab of Keio University Law School Professor Hajime Yamamoto is conducting research on the constitution, which is generally considered the supreme law within the law system. While referencing the global constitutionalism perspective that particularly in recent years has gained heightened interest, the lab deliberates the state of the constitution in Japan as a member of global society.
A good example of a recently popular case in point is hate speech. As for constitutional theory in Japan, from a perspective of respecting freedom of expression, criticism of hate speech comes close to being censorship. That is because it amounts to disallowing speech of undesirable content, so the thinking is that since this would be equivalent to censorship, accepting it is not good.
However, in international society, there is discrimination against minorities in various countries, and discrimination against Jews is a serious problem in Europe, so there is actually a stronger feeling that this must be well regulated lest it turn into a terrible problem. So there is various pressure even on Japan that it would be better to regulate hate speech. Preserve the importance of freedom of speech while regulating hate speech to avoid creating a situation where it is overly difficult for minorities to live in Japanese society. We are examining what is the best way to think about this in a balanced manner.
In recent years, the modern sovereign state system, considered a premise of the constitution and constitutional law, has begun to waver. In Europe, which produced the thinking behind modern law, integration of Europe has led to formation of the European Union, and member countries have handed over some of their sovereignty. With this backdrop, the idea of European constitutionalism was born.
In the post-war international order with the United Nations at its center, international human rights treaties to protect fundamental human rights have gradually played a larger role.
Currently the concept of global constitutionalism is spreading at the global level, and the question of whether humane interference to stop genocide should be permitted has become a big topic.
Right now along with varied individual sexual preferences, there are also religious issues and ethnic issues…well, it's diversity. I believe there is such a word. We are working to help the importance of diversity permeate Japanese society. To this end, having a global standard is very useful.
With the goal of helping create a society that values peace, human rights, and democracy, the Yamamoto Research Lab examines the cooperative relationship between protection of international human rights and protection of domestic human rights while deliberating human rights issues actually occurring in Japan. As for the field of diplomatic security protection, to advance pacifism as set forth in the constitution, moving forward we will cooperate with groups researching international laws and international politics to deliberate the role that constitutional law should play. We are researching not only this type of approach but also how to expand this in the field of education.
As for everyone adopting a global standard, of course it's not as if individual countries do not have their own characteristics, but until now I tend to feel things that really should have been changed more have been all covered and hidden by phrases such as state and sovereignty, with overemphasis on assertions of a particular country's personality. So in that respect, I think that the saying and interpretation of the constitution being the supreme law of the land should be considered a little more loosely. I tend to think that a viewpoint of the constitution towering above everything, which has been the practice until now, will not be very useful in solving problems moving forward.

Aomori Nebuta Festival, Japan
Aomori Japan, August 07, 2009--No one seems to know for sure what Nebuta is about; but, considering the different explanations I have heard makes Nebuta seem to be an integration of ancient religious celebrations of the indigenous Ainu, historical legends of fierce samurai battling demons and beasts, and Shogun battle drums. The massive paper floats tended to catch on fire and burn down entire villages; so, the Meiji government banned Nebuta festivals. The post WWII government revived the festivals to boost morale. Today, the Nebuta festival seems to define the character of the Northern Country and is one of the largest and most spectacular festivals in Japan.

Intel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Intel Corporation is an American multinational semiconductor chip maker corporation headquartered in Santa Clara, California. Intel is the world's largest and highest valued semiconductor chip maker, based on revenue.[3] It is the inventor of the x86 series of microprocessors, the processors found in most personal computers. Intel Corporation, founded on July 18, 1968, is a portmanteau of Integrated Electronics (the fact that intel is the term for intelligence information was also quite suitable).[4] Intel also makes motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers and integrated circuits, flash memory, graphic chips, embedded processors and other devices related to communications and computing. Founded by semiconductor pioneers Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore and widely associated with the executive leadership and vision of Andrew Grove, Intel combines advanced chip design capability with a leading-edge manufacturing capability. Though Intel was originally known primarily to engineers and technologists, its Intel Inside advertising campaign of the 1990s made it and its Pentium processor household names.
Akihabara
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Akihabara (Japanese: 秋葉原), also known as Akihabara Electric Town (Japanese: 秋葉原電気街 Hepburn: Akihabara Denki Gai), is a district of Tokyo, Japan. It is located less than five minutes by rail from Tokyo Station. Its name is frequently shortened to Akiba (アキバ) in Japan. While there is an official locality named Akibahara, which is also 秋葉原 in kanji, nearby (as part of Taitō-ku), the area known to most people as Akihabara (including the railway station of the same name) also include Soto-Kanda, a part of Chiyoda-ku.
Akihabara is a major shopping area for electronic, computer, anime, games and otaku goods, including new and used items. New items are mostly to be found on the main street, Chūōdōri, with many kinds of used items found in the back streets of Soto Kanda 3-chōme. New parts for PC-building are readily available from a variety of stores. Tools, electrical parts, wires, microsized cameras and similar items are found in the cramped passageways of Soto Kanda 1-chōme (near the station). Foreign tourists tend to visit the big name shops like Laox or other speciality shops near the station, though there is more variety and lower prices at locales a little further away. Akihabara gained some fame through being home to one of the first stores devoted to personal robots and robotics.
The area was just out of Sujikai-gomon city gate (present Mansei bridge) which was one of the city gates (Mitsuke) of old Edo (Tokyo). It was the gateway from inner Edo to northern and northwestern Japan and Kan'ei-ji temple in Ueno. Many dealers, craftsmen and relatively lower class samurai lived there.
