Akita: Japan's Onsen Paradise

So, this was the most beautiful place we've been to in Japan, we think. Nyuto Onsen, especially Tsurunoyu Onsen, was an experience like we've never had before, and it's something we'll remember for the rest of our lives. Go visit Akita if you have the chance. It'll blow you away.

Japanese Onsen Ryokan Tsuru no yu in Nyuto Onsen, Akita - 乳頭温泉 鶴の湯

Rated the most popular onsen among foreign travelers who visit Japan, Tsuru no yu sure doesn't disappoint! With the multiple baths it boasts, warm and comfortable tatami rooms, traditional meals made with local ingredients, and a rustic beauty, it's no surprise that this onsen is popular among locals, too.

This onsen is perhaps most famous for its mixed bath and while I was really nervous to try it at first, the experience was really a comfortable one because the onsen staff have clearly considered the privacy of us ladies! Women enter the mixed bath from the side through a sheltered pathway and considering the milky white bath water, I was totally at ease throughout! 10/10 will recommend! (:

We go back to Tsuru no Yu Onsen, except this time we stay at Yama no Yado, a 5 minute bus ride from the main Tsuru no Yu onsen. It has Japanese style rooms with exceptional food and service, and is slightly newer than Tsuru no Yu. It is often described as Japan's best onsen with the milky waters and isolated location making it a perfect escape from the business of Tokyo and Osaka.

Tsurunoyu Onsen at Nyūtō Onsenkyō, Semboku, Akita Prefecture: Four Hot Springs at a Single Inn

The Nyūtō Onsenkyō resort in Semboku, Akita Prefecture is a cluster of eight seven hot spring inns alongside Sendachi-gawa, a mountain stream deep in the forest. Each of the inns has its own springs with distinct characteristics, all supplying large quantities of hot water. The facilities have a rustic look and a hidden-away feel. Mid-October is the peak of the autumn foliage season in this area. Visitors can enjoy being soothed in both mind and body by the experience of bathing in open-air pools while listening to the babbling of the nearby stream and viewing the seasonally colored leaves of the forest.

Among Tthe eight innshot springs at, Tsurunoyu Onsen is are the most historicdistinguished by its history, having been visited by a seventeenth-century lord of the Akita domain for a hot-spring cure. The thatched-roof building that housed his guards now accommodates visitors to the inn. Another distinctive feature of this inn is that it has four hot springs from separate sources, each with its own water quality and therapeutic effects. The inn’s signature bathing place is a large open-air bath for both men and women. Another outdoor bath is for women only. Also outdoors is an utaseyu, a stream of falling water under which bathers stand. The inn also has three indoor baths, each fed from a different source.

ซุราโนะยู เป็นออนเซ็นที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดที่ นิวโตะออนเซ็น ตั้งแต่สมัยเอโดะ อายุมากกว่า 800 ปี เป็นออนเซ็นธรรมชาติที่เป็นบ่อรวมชายหญิง คำว่า “Nyuto” (Nyuuto) แปลว่าหัวนมที่ตั้งชื่อแบบนี้ก็เพราะลักษณะของภูเขารอบ ๆ ที่มียอดเหมือนหัวนม ซึ่งก็สอดคล้องกับลักษณะของน้ำในออนเซ็นที่มีสีขาวขุ่นคล้ายน้ำนมเช่นกัน
