Hachimangu Shrine - Kamakura, Japan ᴴᴰ ●
► After a much needed break away from YouTube, I'm back with lots of new videos from all around Japan; Tokyo, Kamakura, Yamaguchi, Fukuoka and Okinawa.
In my first video of 2018, I'm gonna show you the famous Hachimangu Shrine, the most important shrine in Kamakura, as well as the beautiful shrine garden. The shrine was founded in 1063, and has 5.8 million visitors annually.
The city of Kamakura in Kanagawa prefecture, is rather small by todays standards, but it actually used to be the capital of Japan during the Kamakura period.
I hope you'll enjoy this little tour - thanks for watching! :-)
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Kamakura district, Japan
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is located in the Kamakura district of Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. From the JR Kamakura Station, there is a long paved pathway towards this shrine, which is very enjoyable to walk.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine is dedicated to Emperor Ojin, Hime-gami, and the Empress Jingu. Originally it was built in 1063 near the seaside, Yuigahama, by Yoriyoshi Minamoto. On his return to Kamakura after having suppressed the rebellion of the Abe Family in Oshu, a northern part of the Japan, he founded this shrine in honor of the tutelary deity of the Genji family. Later the shrine was moved to the present site close to the center of Kamakura in 1191 by the first Shogun of Kamakura, Yorimoto Minamoto. He remodeled the shrine into the present arrangement - the Jogu shrine on the top of the stone steps and the Wakamiya Shrine at the bottom.
Like most of the large royal shrines that are dedicated to the Emperors in Japan, this shrine is large, with beautiful gravel grounds, ponds and colors. It is a must see if you are in Kamakura.
Enjoy.

Kamakura Tsurugaoka Hachimangu - Kanagawa - 鶴岡八幡宮 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Kamakura Tsurugaoka Hachimangu - 鶴岡八幡宮 - 4K Ultra HD : Originally erected and founded by Minamoto Yoritomo in 1063, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is the most important Shinto Shrine in the famous resort city of Kamakura, near Yokohama. Its popularity among Japanese tourists of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is almost without limit and its 1.8km long approach gives the shrine its unique sense of grandeur that unfortunately quickly vanishes once you are standing in the shrine’s main hall. But then again, it is only when you are looking back on your path that you can really appreciate the inner beauty of this temple.
Speaking of the shrine’s main approach, did you know that the two ponds flanking it have a dedicated meaning? Indeed the pond that features three islands represents the Minamoto Clan, while the other represents the Taira Clan, Minamoto’s arch rival and has four islands. While this may sound unimportant to most of us, the number four in Japan is also known as the unluckiest number since in Japanese its pronunciation is similar to the word “death”...

☆Bits of knowledge〜Tsurugaoka Hachimangu〜
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu was established by Minamoto Yoriyoshi (源 頼義, 988-1075) in 1063. He built a power base for the Minamoto warrior clan in the east of Japan after the suppression of a rebellion started by clans in the North East of Japan in 1051. He returned to Kamakura, and built a small shrine for the Hachiman kami (the Japanese word for Shinto deities) near the coast to give thanks for success in suppressing the rebellion. The Hachiman kami was regarded as the protector kami of the warrior class.
The current Tsurugaoka Hachimangu owes its origins to Yoriyoshi’s descendant, Minamoto Yoritomo (源 頼朝, 1147-1199), head of the Minamoto clan. Yoritomo came to Kamakura in 1180 to raise the flag of revolt against the Taira clan which had come to dominate Japanese politics in Kyoto especially after 1160. The reason Yoritomo chose Kamakura as his base was because it was here that his great ancestor had successfully put down the 1063 rebellion. He moved the shrine to the present site and built a more magnificent shrine. This new shrine was called Tsurugaoka Wakamiya (鶴岡若宮), which means the new shrine at Tsurugaoka.

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū Reitaisai (Festival)
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura's most important shrine. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu played an important role not only as a religeous authority where the shogunate held many majestic rituals, but also served as the political centre of the realm.
Today, Kamakura is famous for its many historical sites and places of beauty. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is still located at the centre of Kamakura, attracting the respect and the faith of so many.
The festival is conducted over three days from September 14th to 16th.
The Shinkosai parade of parishioner carrying portable shrines is also held followed by a procession of several hundred meters marching through the streets.

► Here's a look at the Hachimangu (Shinto Buddhist) Shrine in Kamakura, Kanagawa. It was originally founded in 1063, and has since then been moved(!), rebuilt and reinforced several times, after taking damage from typhoons and quakes.
At the day of shooting this video, a wedding was taking
place (which is a quite rare opportunity to see here, compared to weddings at the Meiji Jingu Shrine I showed a few videos back)
- and the ceremony style is different too. (including the... aheem... music.)
An interesting experience in very nice surroundings. - Enjoy!

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gû, Kamakura, Japan, 鶴岡八幡宮 | Canon 80D | Virtual Trip
Located in the middle of Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, the Hachiman-gu Temple Complex is the largest Shinto shrine in Kamakura.
From the station, you can take the Komachi dôri shopping street, Wakanomiya Oji dôri Avenue and its lantern-lined central alley, Dankazura, or the residential lanes that run along the tracks. It all depends on the attendance at the time of your visit. If you are there in high season, especially during the Golden Week (early May), the crowd will probably dissuade you from taking the main aisles.
