Asia Week Episode 13 Arts from Post World War II
Katherine Martin (
Katherine Martin has been named the new chair of Asia Week New York, the nonprofit that collaborates with prominent international Asian art galleries, auction houses, and museums to hold a week of events dedicated to Asian art and culture each year. The 2019 edition featured forty-eight exhibitions of Buddhist art, Chinese porcelains, Korean paintings and ceramics, and more. The next Asia Art Week will take place from March 12 to March 19, 2020.
Martin currently serves as the managing director of New York’s Scholten Japanese Art, which specializes in traditional and contemporary Japanese prints. Prior to her role as managing director, she was a specialist in the Japanese department at Sotheby’s New York from 1993 to 1999. During her tenure, Martin was responsible for a series of auctions of inro, netsuke, and works of art from the collection of the late Charles A. Greenfield and the sale of works from the Donna and Arthur Levis collection of Yoshitoshi woodblock prints.
“I am honored to assume the chairmanship of the Asia Week New York Association,” Martin said in a statement. “This annual ten-day event, held every March, has become an important destination for Asian-art collectors, curators, and enthusiasts, and I welcome the opportunity to continue the tradition of our past chairmen by forging new paths forward now that we have passed our ten-year anniversary.”
Kakunen Tsuruoka
Printmaker, painter and antique dealer Tokutaro (Kakunen) Tsuruoka (1892-1977) immigrated to San Francisco as a teenager in the late 1910s. He was well-known for his Japanese-style paintings and intricate woodblock prints, and supported himself as a dealer of Asian antiques. In the mid-1930s, when interest in Japanese woodblock prints was extremely popular, Kakunen designed four woodblock prints (three of them depicted California landscapes and one of a parrot) and had them printed and published in Japan.
During World War II, Tsuruoka was incarcerated by the United States government at the Poston, Arizona camp, where he painted haunting images of the surrounding desert landscape and flora. He was also made craft objects of inlaid wood and set up craft exhibitions to display the work in camp.[1]
After the war, he and his family moved to New York City where he resumed his career in the antiques business, opening Daruma Art Framing Store and Gallery.
He died in 1979 in New York.

While making a way with empty white papers, Cinderella sings Bengawan Solo. The stepmother calls out to Cinderella to clean the house and Cinderella hides. Cinderella’s stepbrother also refuses to clean the house because dancing is more important to him. The prince spreads papers about the palace party but he doesn’t want to get married. The road becomes a mess. Fairy mother pushes Cinderella to go to the palace party. Apparently the prince who comes to Cinderella’s house. They dance. The prince falls in love with Cinderella. The clock is ticking. Cinderella leaves in a hurry and get lost in Aokigahara forest.
Perhaps we are always having trouble recognizing ourselves and others. When interacting with an object, sometimes we feel close, sometimes we feel far away. Often we see things only from a single perspective. Violence always happens, however hard we try to avoid it. Maybe one of the ways we deal with violence is to make fiction.
“A New Normal Cinderella” presentation was made in two ways: a rational and intuitive way. Every creator in this team opened his views on violence. The improvisation is taken as a way of communicating through the body. We tried to make connections from every idea as a way of seeing the theme of violence.

[MagicDarkLight] Stella:Re↑ (7th Japan Expo 2018)
Hello!
It's my video for Japan Expo 2018, I wanted to do something more ambitious but didn't have the time and the energy, however I have to say I'm really happy I made this one. I was hesitating between this song and the one for Estrella during the Soul's team IC, hence the anagram for Stella:Re.
It's also a call back to several of my videos, Stella Carta, Ignescence, Fulgurance, Luminescence and even Black Impulse. But it's also a foreshadowing of something new that will come later this year I hope.
So yes, it's a very MDL video, not original and whatever but don't tell me to calm down. Just enjoy.
