Bike ride in Tsutsujigaoka Park, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan. Today I'm going on my bicycle to Toshu-gu Shrine in Sendai City. I'm in about half way, the day is wonderful, and I decided to relax in the Tsutsujigaoka Park. I really like this park. In the weekdays usually it's not so many people and You can really relax here... In the central part of Tsutsujigaoka Park there is a large meadow, where you can play football or frisbie. Around this meadow it's the alley, and the benches - not exactly a common sight in Japan. A little to the south side it's a large fountain, where on weekends the kids splash around with water. Tsutsujigaoka Park is located on a small hill. It's a shame that the trees obscure the view, but the Sendai City is the city of trees, so... Time to go on. It's still a little way to Tosho-gu Shrine.

As the year is coming to an end, Charly and Victor decided to head on up to Tohoku to meet up with our good friend Chris from the Abroad in Japan channel. First, we hit up a unique spot for lunch called Cafe Pamplemousse to try out some pancakes, a sandwich, and enjoy the quacky atmosphere with other guests.
After lunch, we headed on out to Gyutan Yaki Senmonten Tsukasa to try some of Sendai's renowned beef tongue. Made with Australian Beef, coals from Iwate prefecture, and high-grade rice from Miyagi prefecture itself, this beef tongue dish is definitely a treat!
Wrapping up the night, we enjoyed a few drinks before resting at the 9 Hours capsule hotel in Sendai, then headed out to Matsushima. Matsushima is one of the 3 most Scenic places in Japan, also known as the Nihon Sankei along with Miyajima and Ama no Hashidate. This brings back a lot of memories from Victor's first trip to Japan almost 10 years ago.

JET Programme ALT: A Guide to Hanami in Sendai & Miyagi
Hanami is the spring time tradition in Japan of viewing flowers of cherry (or sometimes plum) trees as they bloom. It’s often enjoyed by sitting under the trees with friends and/or family on a blue tarp with festival food and drinks.
In the Sendai area, due to strong winds, cherry blossoms only last a few weeks before they fall so try to get outside when you see them blooming. At Nishi Park, Tsutsujigaoka Park and Hitome Senbonzakura, there are festival food stalls during the time of hanami. At popular hanami locations, they tend to get busy by midday. Some recommended items to bring include a blue tarp or blanket to sit on and weather appropriate clothing. You can also bring food, drinks, board/card games, fields sports equipment (Frisbee, volleyball, soccer ball, baseball, football, badminton etc.).

Nishikicho Park: a few minutes walk from Kotodaikoen Station along the Namboku Line
Nishi Park: a few minutes walk from Omachi Nishikoen Station along the Tozai Line
Shiogama Shrine: approximately 15 minute walk from Hon Shiogama Station along the Senseki Line or Shiogama Station along the Tohoku Line, approximately 25 minutes North-East of Sendai Station
Tsutsujigaoka Park: a few minutes walk from Tsutsujigaoka Station along the Senseki Line
Hitome Senbonzakura: a few minutes walk from Funaoka Station along the Tohoku Line, approximately 30 minutes South of Sendai Station.
