These oral histories are part of the history mitigation initiative for the historic Pleasant Hill neighborhood in Macon, Georgia. The community was cut in two with the construction of I-75 in the 1960s. The interviews will be archived, including at the Macon Public Library and the Harriet Tubman Museum, in Macon, GA, for future residents and researchers. Produced by GDOT, New South Associates, the Pleasant Hill Neighborhood Improvement Group, and the Federal Highway Administration.

The Tubman Museum says thousands of African-Americans served in the Vietnam War during a time of racial tension back home in the United States. That's one of the reasons why it's hosting an exhibit that tells their stories.

Harriet's Daughters documentary

Girls and women are largely represented within the criminal injustice system, yet they are largely underrepresented in conversations around criminal justice reform. Recently there has been a 700% increase in girls and women in jails and prisons. This documentary aims to bring awareness to some of things women experience in jail and prison. It is also meant to educate and expose real issues while highlighting a community that is often ignored in conversations about incarceration and criminal justice reform. The women in Harriet's Daughters, which is a subgroup of the Women on the Rise GA nonprofit, have made a commitment to working on criminal justice reform. There is an entire network of women fighting for criminal justice reform around the United States, yet their stories are hardly ever told. The group name, Harriet's Daughters, comes from Harriet Tubman, a woman who escaped slavery and physically led about 70 others to freedom along the Underground Railroad. She developed a network of people that she could trust, a network of people who believed and aided in her mission. The women in Harriet's Daughters continue Ms. Tubman's work today as they fight for the liberation of people who have been targeted by the criminal injustice system, which is a undoubtedly a form of slavery.
