Hike - Tuckerman Ravine Trail, Mount Washington, New Hampshire - July 16, 2019
A quick trip up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail on Mount Washington. The Severe Weather App on our phones warned of an incoming thunder storm from the west, and since we didn't plan or pack for bad weather, we backed off before reaching our destination.
Mt. Washington Summit via Tuckerman Ravine
Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288.2 ft (1,916.6 m) and the most topographically prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River.
The mountain is notorious for its erratic weather. On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a windspeed of 231 miles per hour (372 km/h) at the summit, the world record from 1934 until 1996. Mt. Washington still holds the record for highest measured wind speed not associated with a tornado or tropical cyclone.
The mountain is located in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, in the township of Sargent's Purchase, in Coös County, New Hampshire. While nearly the whole mountain is in the White Mountain National Forest, an area of 60.3 acres surrounding and including the summit is occupied by Mount Washington State Park.
The Mount Washington Cog Railway ascends the western slope of the mountain, and the Mount Washington Auto Road climbs to the summit from the east. The mountain is visited by hikers, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the summit. Other common activities include glider flying, backcountry skiing, and annual cycle and running races such as the Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb and Road Race.

Mount Washington via Huntington Ravine Trail - White Mountains, New Hampshire
My cousin Wayne and I travel from Nova Scotia to summit Mount Washington, the highest mountain in the northeastern United States. Our trek started at Pinkham Notch Visitors Center. We travelled up the Huntington Ravine Trail and returned on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Ten Gruelling hours and loads of fun.

Tuckerman Ravine, Southeast Face of Mt Washington, White Mountains, New Hampshire
Tuckerman Ravine is one of New Hampshire's unique natural resources. My wife Catherine, friend Dundee, and I did an uphill 2.4 mile snow and ice packed hike to the base of Tuckerman. This short video shares highlights from our 4 hour hike via the Tuckerman Ravine Trail.
Our trek starts with the 2.5 hour hike from the Appalachian Mountain Club's Pinkham Notch Hut up to the Hermit Hut Shelter, and includes our 1.5 hour downhill hike return to our car.
Tuckerman Ravine is a vast open bowl perched on the southeast slope of Mount Washington, the highest mountain in the Northeast at 6,288 feet. In the spring snow depths can reach 100 feet in the Ravine.
Needless to say, Tuckhterman Ravine is a very dangerous area. It also is very exciting and challenging for skiers and outdoor enthusiasts. The open porch of the Hermit Hut shelter is a great place to watch the skiers.
How do I get to Tuckerman Ravine?
Tuckerman Ravine can only be reached by hiking uphill - there is no ski lift, road, or method of access - other than to hike. You start your hike (many wear their ski equipment on the hike) at Pinkham Notch to the Hermit Hut Shelter (tp://tiimefortuckeran.com/tuckermanravinemap.html). Then you hike straight up the headwall of the Ravine, so you can extreme alpine, snowboard, and telemark ski. This video shows skiers on the Hillmans Highway, Left Gully, and Bowl.
Once reaching the Hermit Hut Shelter, extreme alpine, snowboard, and telemark skiers continue to climb another hour or so up to the headwall of the Ravine's various self-made ski lanes. This video shows skiers on the Hillmans Highway, Left Gully, and Bowl
A Training Hike for Us
Later this summer Dundee and I with five friends plan a 10 hour hike to the peak of Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak at 5,269 feet, and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. ( We are using this Tuckerman Ravine hike to begin building our physical endurance, and at the same time enjoy this marvelous extreme ski ritual of spring in New Hampshire.

Bailing Out In Huntington Ravine - Mount Washington, NH
Home of the world's worst weather. This footage was taken during a climb Odell's gully in Huntington Ravine located on Mount Washington. We decided to bail out on our planned ice climb after experiencing 80+ MPH wind gusts, extremely low temperatures, and zero visibility. The day started moderate and rapidly deteriorated. I'm glad we made the decision we did. Epic day on the mountain!

Day 98 15.8 Miles
Today is the day our tent spot got flooded due to an evening rain storm, waking up feeling happy that we will enjoy a nice breakfast after a few miles at Mizpah Spring Hut. After a bit of climbing and difficult slow going terrain we reach Lake of the Clouds Hut, It has the distinction of being the busiest, highest and largest of the huts. It has 90 bunks which are separated into several bunk rooms, and can sleep another 6 in the basement, otherwise known as “The Dungeon. We reach the gorgeous hut after 2 : 30 pm giving us plenty of time to climb to the top of Mount Washington, buy a few snacks at the gift shop and make our way down towards Madison Spring Hut where we will take a half mile steep Valley Way Trail to a free tent site.

Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail - Mount Washington Summit - New Hampshire High Point
Video of our hike up the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to the summit of Mount Washington September 1-3 2015. We stayed at Lakes of the Clouds Hut and returned via the Jewell Trail. Day 1 we went up the Ammonoosuc Ravine trail to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut. Day 2 we went up the Crawford Path to the summit of Mount Washington and returned to the hut via the Tuckerman Ravine Trail and Tuckerman Crossover. The 3rd day we hiked back to the trail head via the Crawford, West Side, Gulf Side, and Jewell Trails. Overall, this was a very challenging loop, with steep rock scrambles and a precarious descent down the upper half of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. The Jewell Trail descent is posted here:

Open Book, Tuckerman Ravine 11.26.19 | Mount Washington Ice Climbing
Conditions we found 11.26.19
It’s been a few years since I’ve seen the Open Book is “classic” form. With new snow, warm temps, and more snow in the forecast, I’m thinking, maybe next year? I tried shooting in 4K but it appears my iPhone 8 can’t deal with it, as the video seems rather rough. Back to 1080 until I decide to upgrade.

5 Top-Rated Ski Resorts in New Hampshire | US Ski Resort Guide
5 Top-Rated Ski Resorts in New Hampshire, USA
New Hampshire's White Mountains include the tallest peaks in the northeastern United States, and the elevation, plus the northern latitude, assures plenty of natural snow. Early and late in the season, and to tide over the occasional winter thaw, state-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming equipment keeps the trails and slopes in A-1 condition all winter. Not all New Hampshire's ski mountains are in the northern part of the state. Two excellent ski resorts are in the mid-state Lakes Region, and two other good-sized mountains are close to the Massachusetts line in the south. Here five ski resorts in new Hampshire, United States.
1. Cranmore Mountain and North Conway
2. Bretton Woods
3. Loon Mountain
4. Mount Sunapee
5. Attitash Mountain

Mount Washington | Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail | Cog Railway | 2017 | New Hampshire | USA
In this vlog post we are hiking up Mount Washington in New Hampshire, USA. We drove the 12 hours from Nova Scotia, so spend 4 days in the great area of the USA. We did some camping at the KOA near the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail Head and where the Cog Railway starts. We ended up taking the bio diesel train down.
The hike up took about 6 hours to complete. We experienced some hail at the top, which isn't surprising since it has the worst weather in the United States. We decided to take the Cog Railway down and enjoy the views from there!
