1907 Steamship Lyttelton, February 1982
Ordered by the Lyttelton Harbour Board from shipbuilders Ferguson Brothers of Port Glasgow in December 1906, their new twin screw tug arrived at her home port of Lyttelton in the South Island of New Zealand on the 10th September 1907.
The Lyttelton is fitted with a Scotch marine coal fired boiler and two compounding reciprocating steam engines, being originally rated at 1,000 hp. The engine now operates at around 70 rpm, down from the original 100 rpm, with the boiler pressure also being reduced from 110 lbs psi down to 80 lbs psi.
Laid up in 1970, the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society was then formed and set about restoring the vessel to have it certified for public sailings. Despite her now great age and many challenges, a very dedicated team of volunteers ensures that this historic vessel can hopefully continue to operate for many more years.
A number of low light sequences in this film were taken on Kodak Ektachrome. These grainy sequences still graphically illustrate the bygone atmosphere and sounds of a steamship's engine room.
The Captain shown in this film was Tony Lester, long serving skipper of the tug.
If anyone else can be identified please advise.
