Avila, Santa Teresa de Jesús and Palacio de Polentinos - Spain 4K Travel Channel
In Avila you walk in the footsteps of history. This time we visit the church of Saint Teresa, the National Saint of Spain. Afterwards we go to the Palacio de Polentinos, now military archives and museum.
Teresa of Avila, also known as Saint Teresa of Jesus, is considered as a prominent mystic. She was born in 1515 in Avila, as the sixth of twelve children. Her paternal grandfather was a Sephardic Jew from Toledo, who did not convert to Christianity until 1485. Teresa entered the Carmelite Order in 1535, probably against the will of her father. From then on, her life and her faith were humbly devoted to a friendly existence towards God, which was detached from the ego.
All her life she was rather ill than healthy. She constantly sought self-knowledge and internalized her beliefs through meditation. Since 1617, she is the patron saint of Spain. In 1970, Pope Paul VI named Teresa of Avila, as the first woman in the history of the church, a Doctor of the Church.
Many monastic foundations were established in several provinces of Spain to spread their faith.
The Convento de Santa Teresa de Jesus was erected in the 17th century on the site of her birthplace. In the rear part of the church, a corridor leads to her former birth chamber, which was integrated into the building. Another passage leads into a chapel, where a group of pilgrims is currently singing.
Since 1886, the church and monastery belong to the National Monuments of Spain.
When leaving the church, you see a museum on the left, with the relics of Saint Teresa. Here, shooting and photography are forbidden.
On the right is the Palace of Justice with a nice courtyard. If you like to look inside, you have to pass a security scan but the visit is free.
After a quick visit, we continue our way and reach Calle Vallespin, which is part of the Way of St. James. Here is the Palacio de Polentinos

Avila, City Walk - Spain 4K Travel Channel
Avila, the capital of the province of Avila in the autonomous community Castile and León, is the highest-altitude provincial capital of Spain, at 1131 meters above sea level. It is located 110 km northwest of Madrid.
A highlight is the city wall built between the 11th and 14th century. At that time, Avila lay in the bordering area between Moors and Christians. There was always a risk of attacks. the city wall is approx. 2.500 m long time and completely preserved. The city wall and the multitude of Romanesque and Gothic churches gave Avila the nickname City of Stones and Saints.
The old town offers little space within the city walls. Narrow, crooked lanes as well as houses and nobility palaces that can hardly be seen from the outside, characterize the medieval townscape.
It still preserves its 16th-century character. Together with its churches outside the city wall was listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
We start with our tour next to the cathedral at the eastern town gate. It can be recognized well that the cathedral is an integral part of the fortification wall. You find many restaurants in this area. In the evenings, life takes place here.
We head south to Plaza de Santa Teresa de Jesus. The church La Iglesia de San Pedro Apósto is located at the other end of the square.

Epigenetics - our bodies' way to change the destiny written in our DNA | Moshe Szyf | TEDxBratislava
What we thought of as something fixed, DNA is actually very cleverly modified according to current environmental needs. Even before a baby is born, it already knows what world to prepare itself for. Moshe in this talk sheds light on his groundbreaking findings.
Moshe Szyf is one of the poineers in the field of epigenetics. Szyf’ lab has proposed three decades ago that DNA methylation is a prime therapeutic target in cancer and other diseases and has postulated and provided the first set of evidence that the “social environment” early in life can alter DNA methylation launching the emerging field of “social epigenetics”. The Szyf’ lab is interested in understanding basic epigenetic mechanisms and their broad implications in human behavior, health and disease as well as in developing epigenetics’ based therapeutics and diagnostics.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Peru
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written
language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through
audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio
while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using
a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Peru ( ( listen); Spanish: Perú [peˈɾu]; Quechua: Piruw Republika [pʰɪɾʊw]; Aymara: Piruw Suyu [pɪɾʊw]), officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú ), is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peru is an extremely biodiverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river.Peruvian territory was home to several ancient cultures, ranging from the Norte Chico civilization in the 32nd century BC, the oldest civilization in the Americas, to the Inca Empire, the largest and most sophisticated state in pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty that encompassed most of its South American colonies, with its capital in Lima. Peru formally proclaimed independence in 1821, and following the military campaigns of José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar, and the decisive battle of Ayacucho, Peru secured independence in 1824. In the ensuing years, the country enjoyed relative economic and political stability, which ended shortly before the War of the Pacific with Chile. Throughout the 20th century, Peru endured armed territorial disputes, coups, social unrest, and internal conflicts, as well as periods of stability and economic upswing. Alberto Fujimori was elected to the presidency in 1990; his government was credited with economically stabilizing Peru and successfully ending the Shining Path insurgency, though he was widely accused of human rights violations and suppression of political dissent. Fujimori left the presidency in 2000 and was charged with human rights violations and imprisoned until his pardon by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in 2017. Even after the president's regime, Fujimori's followers, noted as Fujimoristas have caused political turmoil for any opposing faction in power, even causing Pedro Pablo Kuczynski to resign in March of 2018.
The sovereign state of Peru is a representative democratic republic divided into 25 regions. It is classified as an emerging market with a high level of human development and an upper middle income level with a poverty rate around 19 percent. It is one of the region's most prosperous economies with an average growth rate of 5.9% and it has one of the world's fastest industrial growth rates at an average of 9.6%. Its main economic activities include mining, manufacturing, agriculture and fishing; along with other growing sectors such as telecommunications and biotechnology. The country forms part of The Pacific Pumas, a political and economic grouping of countries along Latin America’s Pacific coast that share common trends of positive growth, stable macroeconomic foundations, improved governance and an openness to global integration. Peru ranks high in social freedom and it has the third lowest homicide rate in South America; it is an active member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Pacific Alliance, the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the World Trade Organization; and is considered as a middle power.Peru has a multiethnic population of 32 million, which includes Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians. The main spoken language is Spanish, although a significant number of Peruvians speak Quechua, Aymara or other native languages. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such as art, cuisine, literature, and music.
