Illegal tuk-tuks NOT protesting at Phuket Provincial Hall
Claiming they have been unfairly treated by the Phuket Land Transport Office, a group of illegal tuk-tuk drivers gathered at Provincial Hall this morning to submit their complaints to Governor Nisit Jansomwong.
About 200 illegal tuk-tuk drivers applied for the necessary licensing following the NCPO's crackdown on illegal taxis last year, but only about 126 have so far been approved by the Land Transport Office.
Teerayuth Prasertpol of the Land Transport Office declined to comment on the situation. However, he later confirmed with the Gazette that it would be discussed at a meeting on Wednesday with Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkaosuttirak.
Thai TukTuk - Up Close, Inside Tour (Updated Video Available)
A look inside & around a TukTuk 3 wheel taxi in Thailand.
Most run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). For a while they looked like they were going extinct, but they've come roaring back. Literally. The poor man's taxi. The poor man's pickup truck. The poor man's second job:driving one. The let's-see-how-many-schoolgirls-we-can-pack-into-one-before-the-driver-says-no vehicle.
Sure TukTuks are fun.... once. That's why you see so many white tourists in them. Because the locals aren't stupid enough to ride in a hot, dirty 3 wheeled motorcycle with no AC and pay 5x the regular taxi fare. Oh, and locals know that most of the drivers are either drunk or just learning to drive... or both. OK, bit of an exaggeration.
Never ride one in the rain, unless your only alternative is walking (you'll be equally wet both ways, but at least your shoes won't be full of dirty water.)
I've seen them new for 185k baht or roughly $6k USD and a good used for less than half that.

In this video we are talking about Tuk Tuk’s and why you should, or rather shouldn’t, take a Tuk Tuk.
Tuk Tuks are a tireless workhorse for the local Thai population, serving as both convenient people transport and flexible cargo hauler. Look long enough and you will see anything and everything being moved around in a Tuk Tuk (Shots of different items in the tuk tuk)
However, for tourists, they are not always the best choice for getting around
Tuk Tuks can be more expensive than taxis and are more often associated with annoying tourist scams. The most common Tuk Tuk scam is that a driver will give you a tour of 4 or 5 different temples, he will drive you to them and wait for you in between for 40 baht, which is around a dollar.
Sounds great right? Well, yes. But he will make more stops at shops you haven’t asked for. If you stay inside long enough or buy something, the driver will receive a commission or a voucher for free gas.
So if you want to take a Tuk Tuk, how do you do it? The number one rule is to set the price before you get in the Tuk Tuk. So how do you set a price? Don’t be scared to negotiate with the driver, they are used to it and it’s completely normal. Ask the driver how much it would be, you can start by dividing it in half, and then you can meet them somewhere in the middle.
So, what about Thai people. Do Thai people use tuk tuks?
Tuk Tuks are used by local people as cheaper and more flexible transportation than taxis. Thai people usually get a way lower price than foreigners, so for them it’s often cheaper.
Also around Markets, you will find a lot of Tuk Tuks, they are there to help stall owners to bring cargo to and from the market. Tuk Tuks are really the work horses of Thailand, they are almost indestructible and great for moving a lot of stuff or people at once.
Or if they are with a group, because taxi’s only allow 4 people maximum, and for tuk tuk’s there doesn’t seem to be a maximum.

We wanted to know how many people could fit in a Tuk Tuk, so we asked our guides to help us out.
This video is part of a web series about Bangkok and in this series we show you how to get around in Bangkok, Thailand.

Looking for an authentic and unique adventure? Co van Kessel bike tours and boat tours provides a refreshing alternative to the tired tourist experience. We do not battle the crowds at clichéd destinations promoted in guide books, but turn your attention to quaint local communities and charming excursions into the fascinating lifestyle and culture of real Thai people. Every day is different and every tour is a surprise as we focus not on destinations, but lose ourselves in the enchantment of the journey itself.
Co van Kessel, an innovative and adventurous Dutchman, pioneered bicycle tours in Bangkok more than 30 years ago. As a longtime resident and self-professed lover of Bangkok, he understood very well the picture of accelerated urban development (gridlocked traffic, concrete towers, and choking pollution) that has plagued the recent image of the city. He also had a hunch that this was not what Bangkok or Thailand was all about.
Making it his goal to re-discover Bangkok, Co spent thousands of hours on his mountain bike exploring the vast network of local streets, alleyways, footpaths and canals between the main urban thoroughfares. What he found, lurking behind the facade of modernization, were hidden worlds of peace and tranquility, a picture of “real” Thai life that has remained unchanged for countless decades; an identity of a city that is true to the Thai people, yet largely unknown to outsiders.
Whether it’s the colorful sights and smells of the local markets, the fascinating life of locals along the canals, or the surprising existence of bountiful green belts, Co discovered the essence of what makes Bangkok one of Asia’s most captivating cities. Since then, it has been his mission to share these discoveries with the rest of the world.
What we do
Our mission at Co van Kessel Bangkok Tours is to provide our guests with a singularly unique travel experience in Thailand. All our tours use Co’s extensive topographical knowledge of the greater Bangkok area as well as his keen eye for the interesting to take you where nobody else can or will.
We aim not to bore you with talk, but to immerse you in an experience where your individual fascinations emerge.
Bicycles, boats, and our feet become the tools we use to gain access to the previously inaccessible, behind-the-scenes lifestyle of the Thai. Here the roots of an ancient culture will become evident in a way you never could have imagined.

How to Travel in Tuk Tuk | Thai Auto Rickshaw Bangkok | Thailand Local Transportation Tuk Tuk
Bangkok is a rambling, present day city. With such huge numbers of individuals, it can make ordinary assignments that smidgen increasingly harder to do – like getting over the city, for instance. Be that as it may, while autos stall out in gridlocked traffic, and motorbikes are apparently for the individuals who have a desire to die, there exists a fair compromise – tuk tuks. These three-wheeled delights of Bangkok are a convenient method to zoom through traffic and across town – so here's the way to ride one. A must in your checklist whenever you visit Thailand.

Thai city life - Bangkok, Thailand
After a 13 hours flight, we finally arrived to Bangkok, Thailand. The first experience we had stepping into Thailand, was the heavy humid heat that punched us straight in our face and for a few moments we were learning how to breath.
The second thing we did when arrived at the airport was to take a taxi and go to our hotel. Well, by the time we finished our holiday, we realized that the taxi driver charged us twice as much than the actually price. If you ever take a taxi in Thailand show them the meter and ask them polity to turn it on, it will save you loads of money.
A third experience was the tuk tuk scam. Freshly arrived to Bangkok, eager to explore the city, we stopped for a moment to look at our map and decided where to start. At this time a very kind local man, with a fluent English, approached us advising the ultimate and ideal plan for the day. Without any experience or proper research, the mans plan was very plausible and genuine. He even stopped a tuk tuk for us and explained the driver where to take us, and here is were the adventure started. We got onto the tuk tuk, enjoyed our first experience having this very loud and fun ride.
At first we stopped at a local street food place, had some tasty tom yum soup, some stir fried noodles and experienced how does it feel when your face is burning off from a really spicy dish. Next to the street food stall was the Standing Buddha temple, really nice and genuinely impressive. I even said, Bangkok is very similar to Romania as in both places you will find temples at every corner of the street.
Leaving from the temple we realized that we actually fell into a very common scam, as the next destination was a suit store, where we supposed to get a suit from the tailor and the tuk tuk driver to get a commission out of it. We had to go to the first tailor, a second tailor, than a tourism agency, an invitation to a jewelry store, to eventually the tuk tuk driver tell us...Duuude, i cant make any business out of you guys, so this is your last stop.
For 40 THB, it was a good deal to have the first tuk tuk experience and visit a few temples and learn what we had to learn about scams. If in Thailand you must try the tuk tuk, I mean, come oon, you have too. All you have to say: Take me to this location without any stop and for x amount of money, some smiled and refused, but there was always someone who was happy to take us to our destination.
Street food stalls, thai massage places, shops, bars are everywhere you look and they are happy to welcome you into their place.
At the end of the day we managed to visit a few malls and sit down as well to have some brilliant flavorful Thai food with my great friend Pang from Bangkok and Cata, a Romanian friend who happen to be working in Bangkok that week.
I hope you enjoy the video and shows you a bit from what we have seen, tasted and experienced.
As always, thank you for watching and if enjoyed it please hit that like button and SUBSCRIBE as there is more to come about Thailand.
