I hope Emily, Felix and Matt had an awesome first time in the Solomons enduring the treacherous hot environment of Savo's volcanic island. Philip we missed you while you were too busy falling into burning pools of water!
I miss spending sunny QT time with my girls Mei, Sabrina and Sheena and watching my boys Tony and Jahant ride shotgun on the rayboats! Lastly, I'm proud of my brother Vince for leaving city comforts to come back to rediscover his childhood roots :)

LANDING ON GUADALCANAL ...Our first land offensive of World War II was fought here in the Solomon Islands. That was almost 70 years ago - 7 August 1942. Last August I flew with a group to Honiara, Guadalcanal, to tour battle sites. Most of us had relatives who had fought here. Some had actually been here during the war. This eight-minute video is a glance at our first hour on the historic island in the South Pacific, and a look at what it is like today.

Diving the sunken I-1 Japanese submarine outside of Honiara, Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands. The I-1 was sunk by the New Zealand naval trawlers Kiwi and Moa and from it he U.S. Navy reportedly salvaged code books, charts, manuals, the ship's log, and other secret documents that were pivotal in the eventual assassination of Admiral Yamamoto. Diving the Solomon Islands - Kinugawa Maru
On the evening of the 15-16th November 1942 one of the major naval battles of the Solomons was being conducted near Savo Island known as the “Barroom Brawl”. The Japanese Navy was to provide cover for a transport convoy of some 7,000 troops. While the capital ships were involved in the melee off Savo, the transports slipped by un-noticed and commenced unloading troops and supplies.
The next morning, reconnaissance by Marine pilots discovered the Hirokawa, Kinugawa, Yamatsuki and Yamaura Marus close to shore. The ships came quickly under attack from the Marines' SBDs. As loss was inevitable the ships were when beached so that more supplies could be disgorged from their holds.
Also known as the Bonegi 2 it is only 100m up the beach from the Bonegi 1 which is the site of the Hirokawa Maru. The engine block protrudes from the water and stern lies in 26m. The Kinugawa was beached higher than the Hirokawa so most of the super structure is now gone as result of both salvage and 70 years of storm erosion and earthquake damage. There are still significant features clearly visible like the engine block.
