Today we took a stop off in Tully and checked out the sugar cane mill. We didn't really know what to expect from the tour but turned out it was pretty interesting and well worth the $20 price tag! We saw the sugar making process from start to finish, and even got a free sample.
We checked out a little bit of Tully too whilst we were there...

Tully Sugar Mill - located in Tully, approximately 180kms north of Townsville, Australia.

One of the largest sugar mills in Australia based in the regional township of Tully, located on the Bruce Highway in Far North Queensland. Tully is famous for its high rainfall as celebrated by the town’s giant “Golden Gumboot”.

Tully Sugar Mill's principle activities include the milling of sugar cane to produce high quality raw sugar. All sugar produced at the mill is exported. Molasses is produced as a by-product of the sugar extraction process and is a valuable cattle feed supplement.

We spent a day and a half on the Tully Sugar network. This year the job running north to Jaffa/El Arish was running at night, so we focused on other areas. We were rewarded with catching trains at two of the kangaroo lever crossings at Birkala and Feluga, as well as several of the branch lines south of Tully.

It took 1 1/2 days to get just 5 1/2 minutes of new video. Main reasons were rain which shut all lines north of Tully town, (and all mills to the north), the next day was Show Day, closing the mill and causing an early wind-down of trains, and sadly, there is a good chance that some mill staff were misleading me about train locations.
