In fact - it's closer to China than it is to Hong Kong!
It's most famous for its sedimentary rocks and now classified as a geological park. There are only ferries to the island on weekends and public holiday, making it even less popular.

Ping Chau, also known as Tung Ping Chau, is Hong Kong remotest Island, located in the northeast corner of Hong Kong. It was once home to a thriving fishing and farm community of 3000 people. The last resident moved out of the island in 2004. The deserted island is now mostly country parkland and a popular weekend destination. Ping Chau is unique because it is made up of sedimentary rocks. It has some spectacular cliffs and amazing wave-cut platforms. Music: Many of Horror by Biffy Clyro

I visited a beautiful remote island called Tung Ping Chau last weekend, which is an abandoned tropical island between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China. What a REFRESHING change of scenery from Hong Kong city life! Here's a short Vlog of my day exploring the island and fitting in a few workouts along the way :)

Tung Ping Chau in Mirs Bay of the northeastern waters of Hong Kong. It is the easternmost outlying island of Hong Kong.
This crescent-shaped island, measuring 600 metres long and 200 metres wide, is renowned for strange rock formations. Unlike most other rock types across the territory, the island is made up of sedimentary rock including siltstone, dolomitic siltstone, mudstone and chert.
Tung Ping Chau is a popular holiday destination. Its many fascinating attractions, such as wave erosion landscape, the shale that resembles a layered sponge cake and the unusually flat lay of the island itself, have drawn thousands of visitors to the island.
Three flats are flat sea, flat island and flat rock. Tung Ping Chau is only 1.1 square kilometres in size. An island of extremely low elevations, it really lives up to its name. The highest point in the southeast, Hok Ngam Teng, rises a mere 48 metres above sea level, while the highest peak in the northwest, Au Kung Shan, is only 37 metres. As for the wonder, it refers to the famous shale.

CHENG CHAU ISLAND - HONG KONG - HOW TO GET THERE, COSTS, BEACHES AND STEAMED BUNS
Cheng Chau Island is a short 50 minute ferry ride from Hong Kongs Central Piers (Pier Number 5 will take you to Cheng Chau). The ferry costs as little as $HKD19 for the ordinary ferry - which is just under $AUD4 for a one way ticket. Tap on with your octopus card and you are on your way.

Tung Ping Chau (Chinese: 東平洲) is an island in Hong Kong. It was known as Ping Chau (Chinese: 平洲). Tung (Chinese: 東, meaning east) is prepended to the name so as to avoid possible confusion with Peng Chau, another island in Hong Kong with an identically pronounced name in the Cantonese language. Administratively, the island is part of the Tai Po District in the New Territories.
Exploring Tung Ping Island Hong Kong
Ping Chau is an offshore island located in the northeast corner of Hong Kong in Mirs Bay and is close to the border with Guangdong Province in mainland China. Ping Chau is now deserted and has a checkered history. Guns and opium were once smuggled from here, and during the Cultural Revolution many mainlanders swam through shark-infested waters in hopes of reaching Ping Chau and the freedom of Hong Kong.
The island was once home to a thriving fishing and farm community of 3,000 people, but political turmoil during the Cultural Revolution cut off commerce with the mainland and most villagers moved away.[3] In the 1950s, there were about 1,500 people living in the ten villages on the island. By the early 1970s, only a few elderly people remained on the island.[4] In 2004, the last permanent resident moved out of Tung Ping Chau. Some may return on weekends.
