उत्तराखंड में एक छोटी सी जगह है चोपटा, जहां से फेमस चंद्रशिला ट्रैक शुरू होता है। 2680 मीटर ऊंचाई पर स्थित चोपटा से शुरू इस ट्रैक पर खूबसूरत पाइन और देवदार के जंगल हैं। चोपटा को अपनी नेचुरल ब्यूटी की वजह से इंडिया का मिनी स्विट्जरलैंड कहते हैं। विंटर्स में चोपटा पूरी तरह स्नो से ढक जाता है। चंद्रशिला के टॉप पर पहुंचकर हिमालय के नंदा देवी, त्रिशूल और केदार डोम का खूबसूरत नजारा दिखता है। ये ट्रैक इजी होने की वजह से काफी फेमस है, यहां तक कि इसे 7 साल से बड़े बच्चे भी ट्रैक कर सकते हैं।
चोपटा जो मिनि स्विटजरलैंड के नाम से जाना जाता है, उत्तराखंड में 2600 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर एक खूबसूरत हिल स्टेशन है। चोपटा से तुंगनाथ के लिए शॉर्ट ट्रेक है। तुंगनाथ दुनिया का सबसे ज्यादा ऊंचाई (3600 मीटर) पर बना शिव मंदिर है। ये पंच केदार में से एक है जो चंद्रशिला पीक पर बना है। कहा जाता है कि ये मंदिर 1000 साल पुराना है और इससे रिलेटेड कुछ किस्से महाभारत में भी बताए गए हैं। तुंगनाथ से 1 घंटे की दूरी पर चंद्रशिला पीक (4130 मीटर) है जहां से हिमालय रेंज और पीक का ब्रेथटेकिंग व्यू दिखता है। चोपटा से ट्रेक करते हुए घने जंगलों में आपको बर्ड्स की 76 से भी ज्यादा अलग स्पीशीज देखने मिलेंगी। इस ट्रैक पर आसपास की और भी पीक का मजा लें जिसमें चौखंबा, नंदा देवी, त्रिशूल, केदार और भी कई पीक शामिल हैं। आपको ट्रेक पर गोल्डन ब्रेस्टेड ईगल भी दिखेंगे जो हिमायल में ही पाए जाते हैं। चोपटा से तुंगनाथ एक तरफ 1 से 1.30 घंटे की ट्रेक है। तुंगनाथ से चोपटा शाम तक वापस आ सकते हैं।

Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world and is one of the five and the highest Panch Kedar temples located in the mountain range of Tunganath in Rudraprayag district, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The Tunganath mountains form the Mandakini and Alaknanda river valleys. Located at an altitude of 3,680 m (12,073 ft), and just below the peak of Chandrashila, Tungnath temple is the highest Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to be 1000 years old and is the second in the pecking order of the Panch Kedars. It has a rich legend linked to the Pandavas, heroes of the Mahabharata epic.
According to Hindu mythology Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati both reside in the Himalayas: Lord Shiva resides at Mount Kailash. Parvati is also called Shail Putri which means 'daughter of hills'.
The Tunganath myth is indelibly linked to the origin of the Panch Kedar temples built by the Pandavas. The legend states that sage Vyas Rishi advised the Pandavas that since they were culpable of slaying their own relatives (Kauravas, their cousins) during the Mahabharata war or Kurukshetra war, their act could be pardoned only by Lord Shiva. Consequently, the Pandavas went in search of Shiva who was avoiding them since he was convinced of the guilt of Pandavas. In order to keep away from them, Shiva took the form of a bull and went into hiding in an underground safe haven at Guptakashi, where Pandavas chased him. But later Shiva’s body in the form of bull’s body parts rematerialized at five different locations that represent the “Panch Kedar” where Pandavas built temples of Lord Shiva at each location, to worship and venerate, seeking his pardon and blessings. Each one is identified with a part of his body; Tungnath is identified as the place where the bahu (hands) were seen: hump was seen at Kedarnath; head appeared at Rudranath; his navel and stomach surfaced at Madhyamaheshwar; and his jata (hair or locks) at Kalpeshwar.
Legend also states that Lord Rama, the chief icon of the Ramayana epic, meditated at the Chandrashila peak, which is close to Tungnath. It is also said that Ravana, also of Ramayana fame, did penance to Shiva, the lord of the peaks, when he resided here.

The Tungnath temple is 1000 years old and is the second in the pecking order of the Panch Kedars. (Panch Kedar belongs to five Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is located in the Garhwal Himalayan Mountain region in Uttarakhand, India)
After the Mahabharata war, sage Vyasa told the Pandavas that since they were culpable of slaying their own brothers (Kauravas, their cousins) during the Mahabharata war, their act could be condoned only by Lord Shiva. After that, Pandava brothers wanted to search Lord Shiva to seek his pardon for the sins committed by them. But in order to keep away from them, Lord Shiva took in the form of a bull and went into hiding in an underground safe shelter at Guptakashi, where Bhima tries to chase him and hold on the tail and legs. But Shiva’s body in the form of bull’s body parts vanished at Guptakashi and then reappeared in five different places that known as the “Panch Kedar” where Pandava brothers built Lord Shiva temples at each location, to worship and idolize, seeking his pardon and blessings. Each bull's body part is identified with their body names:

The distance is about 32 km via Ukhimath. And from here you can go to Badrinath. Apart from the bus service, taxis and jeeps can also be booked from Rudraprayag. Chopta is a small region of meadows and evergreen forest area which is a part of kedarnath wildlife sanctuary located in Uttarakhand state, India and a base for trekking to Tungnath, third temple of Panch Kedar, which lies 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) away. Located at a distance of 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) from Tungnath is Chandrashila, a rising to over 4,000 metres (13,000 ft).
Chopta is an unspoiled natural destination lying in the lap of the Uttarakhand Himalayas and offers views of the imposing Himalayan range including Trishul, Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba. It is located at an elevation of 2,680 metres (8,790 ft) above sea level. This area is one of the most beautiful places of Garhwal Himalaya.

Tungath can be reached on the Kund-Gopeshwar road up to Chopta, 212 kms. from Rishikesh via Chamoli-Gopeshwar-Chopta route. Buses and taxis ply along the route. From Chopta, the Tungnath temple is 3 kms. trekaway.
