You can catch one of the local Dunedin buses to Corstorphine on route 32, 33, 34, 35 or 36. It will drop you off at the corner of Middleton Road and Stenhope Crescent where it is about 30 minutes walk to the start of the Tunnel Beach Walk.
-- About this video --
Today we are checking out a popular New Zealand beach that is not to be missed when visiting Dunedin! Tunnel Beach is one of the most famous beaches in New Zealand so it’s a Dunedin must do!
We are joined by a fellow backpacker as we take the bus from Dunedin’s Octagon out to Tunnel Beach. Here, it’s a 30 minute one way walk on the Tunnel Beach Walk to the wave eroded cliffs of Tunnel Beach where you can see archways, waterfalls and steep white cliffs. What’s more, we see exactly where the name comes from as we access the beach through a manmade tunnel.
Tunnel Beach is best accessed at low tide to get onto the beach itself. Otherwise, the scenery from atop the cliffs is still an awesome sight in Dunedin.
So what do you think of Tunnel Beach in Dunedin? Would you add it to your Dunedin travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

The only way onto this secluded little beach near Dunedin is down a tunnel stairway carved out of the rock cliff that surrounds it..... Not for the faint hearted, the walk back up from the Beach is a good fitness test.

Dronie: Tunnel Beach, Dunedin - New Zealand in 4K
Tunnel Beach: one of the most romantic places in Dunedin, New Zealand. Watch the stunning aerial footage!
Tunnel Beach is located two kilometres south of Dunedin. The walkway is an easy one hour return walk - although there's a bit of a climb involved on the way back to the car park. During spring the walkway is closed because of lambing.
In the 1870s the tunnel was carved through a rock promontory to allow access to a secluded and sheltered beach the cliffs. The best time to go is around low tide.

Dunedin Beach Track and Penguin Watch | Dunedin, New Zealand~
New Zealand's little piece of Scottish heritage lies in the South Island. Dunedin (named after the Gaelic name for Edinburgh: Dun Edin) was founded by Presbyterian Scottish immigrants, and that legacy can still be proudly felt today. Small and extremely hilly - the city lays claim to the steepest residential street in the world - Dunedin is tucked into the inner corner of Otago Harbour's wild and windswept coastline with rugged beaches, raw clifftop landscapes, and even the world's only mainland colony of royal albatross, right on the city's doorstep. The town center itself is compact and easily navigated on foot with many fine examples of late 19th-century architecture still well preserved.

The Tunnel Beach - Dunedin, New Zealand
Tunnel Beach is a locality 7.5 kilometres (4.7 mi) southwest of the city centre of Dunedin, New Zealand. Located just south of St Clair, Tunnel Beach has sea-carved sandstone cliffs, rock arches and caves. Beyond the beauty of the rugged sandstone cliffs, its claim to fame is the tunnel down to the beach that a local politician, John Cargill, son of Captain William Cargill, had commissioned for his family in the 1870s.
Access to the beach is via a track across private farmland, and is open year round excluding lambing season from August to October. The track was opened in 1983, and is a popular walking track. It descends from 150 metres (490 ft) above sea level at its start, a short distance off Blackhead Road, winding for some 1200 metres to the top of the tunnel close to a natural sea arch. The tunnel descends 72 steps to the beach, and is dimly naturally lit. Note that the path down is steep and can be very slippery following wet weather.

We explored Tunnel Beach outside of Dunedin, New Zealand on a rainy day. It was a beach with a tunnel, but kind of way cooler than it sounds.

Tunnel Beach | Dunedin | 2017 | HD
Probably the most popular beach in Dunedin for tourists. Tunnel Beach is known for its amazing rock formations and tunnel carved through the landscape taking you down to a quite little beach, only accessible through this tunnel.
The disused Round Hill Tunnel, Otago, New Zealand
It took some finding and getting to but we managed to get into the Round Hill Tunnel between Milton and Lawrence. There's quite a few crack at one end of the tunnel and it's pretty wet inside but it's a great explore.
