Taroko Gorge 4 - Tunnel of Nine Turns (Jiuqudong) 太魯閣4 - 九曲洞
I continue down the Swallow Grotto Trail which leads to the Tunnel of Nine Turns. This road runs along the Central Cross-Island Highway which connects Hualien to Taichung. This is also where the tunnels get darker but still can get to see the mountains. 我繼續走在燕子口步道上, 走到九曲洞. 這裡的路是中部橫貫公路. 你可以開車從花蓮到台中. 這裡的隧道越來越暗.

Taroko National Park’s Jiuqudong Trail to reopen next Monday
Jiuqudong Trail had been a popular attraction in Taroko National Park, until a rockslide shut it down in 2013. After nearly six years of restoration work to add rock slide protections, the 700-meter-long trail will reopen next Monday on a trial basis. The trail offers spectacular views over Taroko’s marble formations. New paths have been laid to let visitors get a closer look at the park’s natural beauty. One of the new routes will usher visitors to the depths of the narrow valley to admire the breathtaking cliffs from below.

Taroko Swallow Grotto Trail | Yanzikou
Almost everyone who has been to Taroko Gorge must have done this trail. Its easy, well-made walkway with magnificent views along the way and most group tours cover this.
Highlights of the trail includes Indian Chieftain’s Profile Rock (印第安酋長石), potholes (壺穴) along the cliff face, swallows around the caves, Jinheng Park (靳恆公園) and Jinheng Bridge (靳恆橋).
I took the shuttle bus and alighted at Yanzikou Bus Stop which is at the start point of the trail. I did not clearly know where the trial stops. So even after reaching Jinheng Bridge, out of curiosity, I carried on to walked all the way till the end of the tunnels. At the point, I saw the tour buses and a few cars around. On the way back I realized the trial actually stops at the Jinheng Park. My step counts that day went over 17000. Luckily, I managed to catch the last shuttle bus out of Taroko Gorge. Otherwise, I wouldn't know what to do.

Zhuilu/Jhuilu Old Trail Hike in Taroko National Park
A recent trip to Zhuilu/Jhuilu Old Trail in Taroko Gorge National Park in Hualien, Taiwan. Unsurpassed views on this one! There is a reason it is one of the most classic routes in all of Taiwan. If you want to try it out yourself, check out our website at hualienoutdoors.org or drop us a line at hualienoutdoors@gmail.com.
Baiyang Waterfall Trail (白杨步道) | Cave of water curtain
Baiyang Waterfall Trail (白杨步道) | Cave of water curtain
The Baiyang Waterfall Trail is characterized by the number of tunnels. Beginning with the entrance tunnel of 380 meters (by the Central Cross-Island Highway 900 meters west of Tianxiang) to the last tunnel before Water Curtain, you will pass through seven tunnels along the 2 kilometer trail ( the 4 km round trip will take about one hour and a half).
Some of the tunnels are as straight as a pencil and you can see the light at the end. Others however are curved such that you will be enveloped in pitch-black darkness for a short time unless you take along a flashlight, which is advisable. Looking out of the tunnels from within, the lovely green mountain view is like a painting by a master. The trail was originally built by Taiwan Power Company in 1984 during the early stages of their plans (approved for construction in 1979) to develop hydroelectric power in the area, plans that included damming many parts of the gorge. The hydroelectric project for this area was eventually cancelled. Taroko survived and a road left that makes it easier for us to get into this once remote area.
The ground rock after Water Curtain (Shui-lian-dong) is loose and there is danger of a collapse so as present visitors are only allowed to the entrance of the first Water Curtain. Water curtain is a special scene created by spring water falling from the tunnel roof. Unfortunately, the danger of roof collapse means that the other water curtains are out of bounds.
How to get there?
Take a train to Hualien Railway Station, continue by Hualien Bus (New Hualien Station-Tianxiang Line) to Tianxiang stop.
The entrance of the Baiyang Trail is located about 300 meters from Tianxiang on the Central Cross-Island Highway. Near Wen Mountain (Wenshan), hikers will come upon the tunnel that is the beginning of the Baiyang Trail.
*Bus number 1133A(Orange bus) infront of Hualien Railway or 1133A and 302 at Xincheng Railway station and drop to Tianxiang Village.

CHASING WATERFALLS: Chengchun Falls | Taroko Part 1 | Hualien, Taiwan
#4 Taroko National Park, located in Hualien County is a must place to visit here in Taiwan.
Day 1: We travel from Kaohsiung to Hualien, it is far but it's great. The coastline view was amazing. We arrived in Taroko after almost 5 hour trip. We trek through Shakadang trail and the river wasn't like an ordinary river. It was magnificent tortoise colour. Then we went to Swallow Grotto and witness the amazing gorge of Liwu river. Before we end the day, we went to Chengchun Waterfalls and it was awesome. The water is coming for eternal spring. Isn't amazing?

Taroko Gorge Info:
The best place to view the Taroko Gorge inside the national park, Swallow Grotto is near the middle of the park and located just after Buluowan (布洛灣).
The walls on each side of the river contain caves which form natural nesting places for spring swallow birds, bringing life to the area nearby the roaring river, with locals naming it Swallow Grotto.
The path is shared between pedestrians and automobiles (one-way traffic), and a tunnel is located south of the primary trail running parallel for main traffic.
Sights along the trail include the Indian Chieftain’s Profile Rock (印第安酋長石), potholes (壺穴) along the cliff face, swallows darting in, out, and around the caves, ultimately leading up to the Jinheng Park (靳恆公園) and Jinheng Bridge (靳恆橋). Walking from the Buluowan-Swallow Grove Trail to the Jinheng Bridge takes around 20 minutes. Due to frequent landslides and falling rocks, it is advised to wear a safety helmet, available for free from the park.
When standing near the middle of the grotto, it’s possible to see two vastly different views on the east and west. The east side of the grotto is more flat, with yellow-brown metamorphic gneiss rock, while the west side is steeper with primarily grey-black marble rock. The differences in the landscape are due to the erosive power of the Liwu River (立霧溪) and its effect on the rock. The upstream marble is more resistant to erosion, creating a narrow and steep gorge, as opposed to the downstream gneiss rock which is more easily eroded, creating a wider, flatter landscape around the riverbed.
Located close to the grotto is the Zhuilu Old Road (錐麓古道, Jhuilu Old Road), previously part of the Cross-Hehuan Mountain Road during the Japanese era, and was built in 1914 following the end of the Battle of Taroko to control aborigine villages. This 10.3KM long, 90CM wide trail begins at the Cimu Bridge (慈母橋) and reaches heights of 500M above the Liwu River. The road ends at Swallow Grotto by crossing a suspension bridge back to the main road PH8. Mountain and park entry permits are required to hike this difficult path, and visitor count per day is limited.
