Along The Tuojiang River, Fenghuang Ancient City, China
The Tuojiang River is the life force of the local people in Fenghuang. Almost every tourist takes one of the boat rides down the river and Travels With Sheila was no exception. The view of Fenghuang spread out on both banks and beyond are spectacular.
Covered bridges, women washing their clothes along the embankment, fishermen, refuse collected by boat, and...the famous stilt houses of Fenghuang. Stilt houses are usually built besides a river or in steep mountain areas to make use of land that could be thought of as unusable. How these stilt houses manage to not collapse into one another or fall into the Tuojiang River is beyond me...
China Fenghuang County: Overcrowded ancient town
May Day is supposed to be a time when people get away from the city and go somewhere quiet and beautiful, like an ancient town.
But for some, things didn't go as planned this year. For example, Fenghuang County never expected anything like 49-thousand tourists to flood in for one day. The once peaceful county in Hunan Province now gets a bit crowded on holidays.
Mr Wang brought his family to Fenghuang County all the way from Beijing during his precious three-day holiday. They are fascinated by the traditional flavor of the ancient buildings, but that's not the only thing that left an impression on the family.
Mr Wang said, It's way too crowded here. I think lots of people drove here and that's why there are too many private cars on the street. But it's inconvenient because they're stuck most of the time. And the cars are destroying the local flavor.
Many of the visitors come to Fenghuang for a refreshing moment of tranquility, but unfortunately they didn't get what they wished for. According to the statistics from the local tourism bureau, the number of tourists to Fenghuang dramatically rose since 2007. Last year, a total amount of 5.3 million tourists paid a visit to the 1.8-thousand square kilometer county; the peak number during public holidays is 45-thousand people per day, a figure nearly doubles the county's total number of beds.

Fenghuang Ancient Town
Fenghuang Ancient Town (or Phoenix Ancient Town) is a national-level famous town for its history and culture. This small town boasts the Pearl of West Hunan Province. Hemmed in by rolling mountains and watered by a smoothly flowing river, flagstone streets, rows of traditional wooden houses built on stilts, towers, bridges everywhere, small boats rowed down the river, that's a portrait of Fenghuang. It's an authentic ancient town not too touristy.

Feng Huang, China. Riverside Antiquity
We almost didn't go.
Another 22-hour train ride, this time through China's deep countryside. I remember thinking it would be easier to just go back to Shanghai.
I kept my thoughts to myself.
Maybe it was the visual in my mind's eye of a city on stilts, a green river flowing through its center. The image enchanted me and this new curiosity began to restructure the itinerary.
Our early morning arrival into Feng Huang seemed underwhelming at first. Perhaps it was the long journey, the grey morning sky, or a city that had not woken up yet. Thoughts of Shanghai crept back into my head. But, it didn't take long to discover that the beauty of Feng Huang lies in its primitive simplicity.
Wooden houses on stilts, uneven stone steps, narrow alleyways all within an ancient walled city. The overcast skies turned the city into a giant soft box of light, making the colors amidst grey buildings pop.
The Tuo Jiang River not only carried tourists in boats but also served as a laundry source, kitchen basin and even bath, its waters rushing through the town at a fast pace but leaving the city seemingly untouched by time.
We almost didn't go, but thankfully we did.
Fenghuang - Phoenix Ancient Town
Phoenix Ancient Town, aka Fenghuang Ancient Town, is situated on the western boundary of Hunan Province in an area of outstanding natural beauty where mountains, water and blue skies prevail. 'Fenghuang' is Chinese for 'Phoenix', the mythical bird of good omen and longevity that is consumed by fire to be re-born again from the flames. Phoenix Ancient Town is so called as legend has it that two of these fabulous birds flew over it and found the Fenghuang Town so beautiful that they hovered there, reluctant to leave.
Upon arrival visitor will be impressed by its air of mystery, elegance and primitive simplicity. The scenic spots inside remain attracting the whole year, but the best time to visit Fenghuang Ancient Town is July to September, when the weather is rather pleasant. This is a world that is dominated by the colour green. The mountain slopes are covered with green foliage, the fields are green and even the Tuo Jiang River reflects the greenery. The bridges over the water and unique houses built on stilts display a harmony that is so often portrayed in traditional Chinese paintings. This is particularly true when mist pervades the scene in the early morning or after rain. It soon becomes apparent that the claim to being one of the two most beautiful towns in the whole of China is more than justified; the other town is Chang Ting in Fujian Province.
A Warm Welcome to Ancient Fenghuang (Phoenix Town), China
Not happy about the rat in the dinner restaurant last night, Travels With Sheila's spirits perked up the minute we stepped foot into Ancient Fenghuang. The word Fenghuang in Chinese means Phoenix. A big square with a bronze phoenix in the center and throngs of Chinese and Korean groups running to and fro, paying 10 Yuan to dress in a Miao outfit and pose for photos.
In seconds, ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I were mobbed by groups of high school students who were very excited about our foreign appearance (hope that was a good thing) and wanted to take pictures with us and ask questions. Most Chinese have never seen or met a foreigner and only know what they see on television or in the movies. Such fun and the interaction is priceless....

Shopping in Ancient Fenghuang (Phoenix Town), China
Hindsight is always 20/20 and Travels With Sheila thoroughly recommends you spend two days at least in Fenghuang. Visit the historic sights and stroll through the back alleys paved with flagstones letting feet take you where they will. Go in and out of the small stores and people watch.
Fenghuang has developed from a simple, quiet town into a popular tourist destination over the past decades. Up to the 1980's, most of the local residents made a living by rafting, cutting wood and bartering logs and folk products with very few tourists. But now...what a sight!

China Travel Vlog: Feng Huang
Our Vlog of a recent trip to Feng Huang and the Miao Ren Valley. The ancient Phoenix town in Feng Huang is a wonderful place to see, but can be extremely crowded during any Chinese holiday as it is one of the most popular tourist spots in Hunan. There are plenty of shops to pick up souvenirs and try traditional foods. In the evening the town comes alive with bars along the river. The Miao Ren Valley and village is also a nice place to see how some of the Chinese minorities go about their daily lives. Both places are heavily influenced by tourism, but well worth a visit.
