Travel Jaipur, India - Turban Museum
Learn about Turbans' history, uses, and types in western India's state of Rajasthan.
Turbans' are worn around the world. They can indicate social status, religious preference, occupation or the mood of a person. In the western part of Jaipur India turbans' are a regular attire for traditional wear. Here in the Turban museum you can see the role of turban in Rajasthani culture. All kinds of turbans displayed over here to show how they are used in the daily lifes of rajastani people.
This is suposedly one of the largest collections in the India and maybe in the world. This is a collection which took me many years to put together. The material was bought wholesale. White in color. Then we would go to different villages in Rajasthan. We would have it colored and dyed there. Then the local expert would dye it according to the style and then this would be put into a box and brought here. In fact, some of the turbans are very sensitive and the person who had it dyed he would have to put it on his head and bring it, because otherwise it would unwrap.
Different colors can be common during seasons. White and red typically worn during the spring. Bright colors are worn during weddings and other happy occassions. So when wearing a turban make sure you have got the right color. We have different types of turbans'. These are wedding turbans of different communities. That is Muslim. This is a snake charmer. This is a Maheshwari, a businessman that is a rajput from Udaipur. Turbans, I may also explain, come in two categories. Pag, which is 22 meters. Which is worn, takes 2 to 3 hours to tie, and you can wear it like a cap till the cloth gets dirty, maybe two months or three months. This is a pag, six inches wide. It is worn like a, folded like a bandage.
This is a safa which is 10 meters, 9 to 10 meters. And this is worn more less every second day or third day. It takes maybe, an expert can tie it in 2 minutes or three minutes. Turbans are also used for pulling up water like a rope from a well. It is also used for tieing a cow or a goat. These are rare turbans. We heard of only one person who could tie it. This is from Nagor district, so it is called Nagora Pag. This one is 44 meters, it is the longest. Tieing a turban is an art in itself. For those who are good at it can take part in the competitions all over. This is Subashish Bharuka showing you Jaipur.
