Hoses cluttering sidewalks while replacing a 70-
ERLANGER, Ky. (Joe Webb) -- An unconventional water project cuts back on digging up the road but not everyone is digging it.
The Northern Kentucky Water District is re-lining a mile-and-a-half stretch of a 70-year-old water main which runs under Dixie Highway in Erlanger, Elsmere and Florence. Miles of temporary water hoses and pipes are above ground and some are getting in the way.
For the last week, plastic pipe and blue hose have lined both sides of Dixie Highway on the sidewalks for nearly a mile as crews got ready to start the water project. Tuesday they started hooking up customers who will get their water through a one-inch, above ground hose while the work is done.
Workers are racing the clock to get done before the first really cold weather. There's a lot of work going on along one of Dixie Highway's busiest stretches. Not only are drivers sharing the road with water crews, pedestrians are sharing the sidewalk with temporary water lines. Miles of plastic pipe and blue hose carry the essence of life but there's some pain in the essence when the lines are above ground. Leaks are messier. Parking lots are rendered useless. Business owners are coping.
Dave Schreiver of Swan Florist said, The water lines are kind of everywhere. They're blocking the handicap access and diminishing the ability to get in the parking lots.
Schreiver's wheelchair access wasn't the only one blocked by blue hose, I'm not an engineer but I think I could come up with a couple of different ways, he said.
The temporary lines are a tradeoff. The Northern Kentucky Water District is not tearing up all of Dixie Highway to replace the old main. They're inserting a liner so most of the road can stay open. But that means hoses. It's a pain but engineers say it's worth it.
While the re-lining is going on, the big blue hoses will carry water to smaller, plastic, above ground lines that hook right into a customer's supply at the meter box. Aside from getting in the way, they will also be exposed to the cold and could freeze.
VP of Northern Kentucky Water District, Richard Harrison, said, It's not out of the question that some of the individual service connections can freeze up and then we'll have to work through that if we have really cold weather.
This is a 90-day project. That would push completion into December. The tri-state could have some pretty cold weather by then. The project runs from Price Avenue in Erlanger to Turfway Road in Florence. That's about 7,500 feet of water main.

Florence Drive - Florence, KY
This all-new production features recent digital video shot entirely with a Jazz DVZ 100 Digital Video Camera.
This was recorded on Friday, September 23, 2011 while on a day trip to Florence, KY:
I made a short trip down the road to Boone County to visit with friends. After a short trip out to the Florence Nature Park, I decide to put the cam-corder up on the dash of my car and shoot through the windshield as I drive to visit friends near Mall Road in Florence.
In this video, I capture the drive among the traffic of an early Friday afternoon in Florence as seen from the driver's point of view. You'll travel along as I drive from Banklick Street to Dixie Highway to US Route 42 to Mall Road before heading into the apartment complex where friends live.
The time-lapse effect was accomplished by recording in normal speed and then speeding the film to approximately 8 times the normal speed.

This is basically un-used video from a visit to Florence, KY in May of 2010. I has basically discarded this video and considered it useless, however, I liked the beautiful weather so much that I decided to post it to ease my winter blahs.
In this video, I capture a beautiful spring afternoon outside Turfway Park, a world famous horse track in Florence, KY. The impresive exterior facade of the main clubhouse is featured as well as some of the surrounding parking lot and grounds.
