Egypt: 26 acquitted of inciting debauchery in Cairo bath house
A court in Egypt has acquitted 26 men charged with 'inciting debauchery'.
They were arrested in December 2014, following a raid on a bath house in Cairo. At the time, local prosecutors said the owner of the facility was accused of turning it into a site of immoral and indecent conduct and group homosexuality.
While homosexuality is not outlawed in Egypt, discrimination is common.

CAIRO, Jan 12, 2015 (AFP) - An Egyptian court on Monday acquitted 26 men accused of debauchery after their night-time arrest from a Cairo bathhouse for suspected homosexual activity, in a case which triggered international concern.
The men were arrested on December 7 in the raid on a hamam in the Azbakeya district of the capital, amid fears of a widening police crackdown on gays in Egypt.
The raid was filmed by a female television journalist, who days later aired its footage on the The Hidden, a weekly programme shown on pro-regime private satellite channel Al-Qahira Wel Nas.
The footage showed the near naked men, covering their faces and wearing only towels, dragged out of the hammam and loaded onto police trucks.
Allahu Akbar (God is Greatest), Long live justice, chanted the defendants when the verdict was announced, an AFP correspondent reported from the court room.
Long live justice and the police, cheered the jubilant families of the defendants, some of who clashed with reporters and photographers before the hearing began.
The defendants, including the bathhouse owner and four employees, were brought handcuffed to the court room and made to stand in a metal cage guarded by two rifle-wielding policemen.
The ruling proved our innocence and cleared the name of the hammam. I swear we did nothing wrong, said Fathy Abdel Rahman, owner of the bathhouse.
Finally, an Egyptian court issued a verdict in a case of this kind according to the law, Ahmed Hossam, a defence lawyer, told AFP.
Egyptian law does not expressly ban homosexuality, but gay men have previously been arrested and charged with debauchery instead.
In the past, homosexuals in Egypt have been jailed on charges ranging from scorning religion to sexual practices contrary to Islam.

Relatives of the defendants kissed policemen present in the court as they expressed joy on hearing the verdict.
Thanks to Allah, the truth is out ... my son was in the hammam with his friend to bath before his wedding. My son is a real man, said Hanan, a mother of one of the defendants.
Relatives threatened to sue television presenter Mona al-Iraqi who filmed the raid.
It's very obvious that Mona al-Iraqi fabricated the case, it's only right that the prosecution files a case against her for making a false report to the police, said lawyer Hossam.
This will be the best rehabilitation for the defendants, he said.
The case was fabricated and about to completely destroy 26 families. God revealed the truth, said Sayed, a brother of one of the defendants.
Iraqi has said on her Facebook page that airing the footage was not aimed at targeting homosexuality, but was part of a series uncovering male sex trafficking and the spread of AIDS in Egypt.
Defence lawyer Islam Khalifah said there was no evidence to convict the defendants.
There was the police officer's story, and he is the only witness and the forensic report denied his version of the story, he said.
The forensic report submitted to the court states that none of the defendants showed signs of regular homosexual activities.
Advocacy groups such as New York-based Human Rights Watch have condemned prosecutions of homosexuals in Egypt, and also condemned the controversial anal tests carried out on them.
This is amazing and unprecedented in Egypt, said Scott Long, a human rights activist who attended the trial, after the verdict was issued.
The verdict came weeks after a court in a separate case reduced the jail terms of eight men over an alleged gay wedding video that went viral on the Internet, slashing them to one year each from three years.

Egypt Raids Bath House Over 'Suspected Homosexuality'
Egyptian security forces raided a bath house and arrested 25 men suspected of homosexuality, dragging them naked out of the building in downtown Cairo, an official said Monday.

Men enjoy bathing at ancient Damascus hammam - 2014
Syrian men have for centuries been bathing in traditional hammams, or bathhouses.
The tradition continues in Damascus today - and provides a brief escape from the turmoil of a country in civil war.
STORYLINE:
Here in the Al-Malik al-Zahir bathhouse in the old city of Damascus, the timeless tradition of public bathing continues.
It is hard to imagine the conflict raging elsewhere in Syria, when here all is tranquillity.
The sound of splashing water, the patter of wooden clogs, men's quiet conversation.
The hammam is a tradition that goes back centuries and still follows the same routine.
Bathers change out of their clothes, wrap a cloth round their waist and put on a pair of wooden clogs, or kabkabs.
Attendants hand each bather a bowl containing soap and a sponge.
Bathers then shower before progressing into the inner steam room.
The owner and manager Bassam Kabab says the Al-Malik al-Zahir hammam is more than a thousand years old.
Al-Malik al-Zahir bathhouse is considered the oldest Hammam in Syria and it might be the oldest in the world, he says. What I am sure of hundred percent is that it is the oldest in Syria. It was built in 985 A.D. which means it is 1,029 years old.
Once in the steam room, some bathers choose to have an attendant give them an invigorating exfoliating back rub, or a relaxing massage.
At the end, swaddled in fresh robes to dry off, bathers relax with a hot mint tea and a hookah pipe, known an argilah, a water pipe used for smoking flavoured tobacco.
Although the hammam still attracts locals, tourists no longer visit due to the Syrian conflict.
There are two kinds of customers of the bathhouse: locals and tourists. Nowadays only locals visit the Hammam because tourism is not like in the old days. In winter, locals used to come to the Hammam, while in the spring and summer most of our customers used to be tourists, both Arabs and foreigners, Kabab says.
The Romans introduced public bath houses to Syria when the land was part of the Roman Empire and the tradition has remained popular ever since.
The hammam became an important place for the local community and there used to be hundreds in Damascus alone.
But as modern bathrooms in Syrian homes replace public bathing, the popularity of hammams is waning and there are now fewer than 20 left in the capital, according to research by travel writer Richard Boggs.
The Al-Malik al-Zahir hammam still attracts loyal customers, however:
I have been coming to the bathhouse my whole life. I have done it for the last 30 or 40 years. It is bliss for me. When I have pain in my feet or back, I come here to get refreshed. I love coming to the bathhouse, says one regular, Khalil.
Although the bathhouse is a tranquil haven, it is still affected by the turmoil of Syria's civil war, which has killed more than 190,000 people and left much of the country in ruins.
We have problems with the water and electricity, even with the fuel. But we are managing to solve this problem and run the bathhouse, says Kabab.
Although the Syrian capital has been heavily protected by Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces, rebel mortar attacks on government-controlled areas have become daily occurrences.
For his customers, however, Kabab's hammam can provide some respite from the world outside.
