RUSSIA: MOSCOW: ANNUAL ICE BATHING
Russian/Nat
The Soviet Union has disintegrated and the Russian Empire came and went -- but there's one tradition in Russia that continues to endure.
Every winter, hundreds of Russian bathers break the ice to take a dip in the Moskva river.
These bathers, otherwise referred to as walruses, swear by their annual ice-bathing, claiming it saves thousands of roubles in doctor's fees.
Fifteen below zero on the thermometer and six inches of snowfall overnight -- perfect weather for a refreshing dip in the Moskva river.
While Russia's new class of wealthy have fled the Russian winter for the shores of Thailand and Southern Turkey some Muscovites prefer a dip closer to home.
Dubbed the walruses, these Muscovites gather throughout the winter months to test their mettle against the elements.
Veterans reckon a regular plunge saves thousands of roubles on doctor's fees.
Some claim even greater benefits.
Committed ice-bathers believe a quick dip followed by a couple of shots of vodka rewards the serious adherent with spiritual and even aphrodisiac properties.
SOUNDBITE: (In Russian)
It means health and certainty in the future. I recommend ice-swimming to all women!

centuries.

Your mood improves, especially if you get into a regime. And you can work better too.

And, as veterans are quick to point out, it's a lot cheaper than exercise bikes, aromatherapy and magic crystals.

Crazy Russian Spa Experience | Traditional Banya in Novgorod
Ever since we have heard about the crazy Russian Spa/sauna experience called a Banya...we just knew we had to do one.
We have left the city of St Petersburg and made our way 4 hours south to Veliky Novgorod where we are staying in the cutest little boutique hotel for the night.
Here we tried a traditional Russian Spa - a Banya, where you work with the two extremes - really hot and really cold...oh also for some reason you whack each other with birch leaves... also we had shots of Vodka afterwards and explored the little city of Novgorod.

Life at a Russian spa: Stinky water, mud wraps, and fried rat - Taste of Russia Ep.13
More films about food and cooking:
To recover from the after effects of the last episode’s “small Greek party,” Oscar and Glen go to one of Russia’s premiere spas, Mineralny Vody, to take in its legendary mineral water and treatments.
First stop is a dispensary offering a wide variety of the Caucuses’ healing waters, where the friends finds out that just because something’s good for you, it doesn’t mean it tastes good too. Next, they go to a spa for some classic health treatments. While Oscar soaks in hot mineral water in a marble tub fit for a tsar, Glen finds himself wrapped up like a mummy, encased in hot mud.
Thoroughly relaxed, Oscar and Glen head to Yutsa Mountain in nearby Pyatigorsk for something more active. Glen gets the chance to soar like an eagle in one of Russia’s best hang gliding sites.
After such a healthy and active day, Oscar decides to reward his friend’s brave feat with a “real man’s” meal, but Glen is shocked and a bit terrified to learn what dish is made of.

Red Square Spa (Russian Bath House and Bar) - Walk Through Video
1914 W. Division St., 60622
They have a wet sauna, dry sauna, steam room, hot tub, cold plunge pool, relaxation areas, various massages, full bar and restaurant, tanning.
Originally opened back when the Cubs were a perennial powerhouse (1906), Division Street Russian and Turkish Baths became a hotspot visited by the likes of Al Capone and Rev. Jesse Jackson before shuttering a couple of years ago. But fear not, it's now relaunched as Red Square, allowing you to combine your vodka with amenities like the above co-ed sauna
An all-day pass gets you admission to the spa, a robe, sandals, and a microchip-embedded wristband so you won’t lose your locker key even when you’re buck naked. In Russia, wristband wears you
They have Swedish, deep tissue, and warm stone massages for both loners and couples
If the heat's your thing, either go back to Miami or hit this a jacuzzi tub, then get hotter with wet and dry saunas that reach up to 180 degrees
The dining room is designed like a 19th-century Ukrainian train complete with curtained televisions playing video of the countryside
A spoonful of Hackleback caviar, and... more vodka
The scallops are served with cauliflower puree, caviar and, more vodka! (Not pictured, but they'll bring it if you ask.
In 2013, the bathhouse reopened under new owners, who did a complete rehab of the facility, perhaps to align it with the trendy Wicker Park neighborhood. The old granite-brick oven still bakes in the sauna, but the mosaic tile floors, cedar walls, and lavish spa treatments—think facials and aromatherapy body scrubs—make this a far cry from Capone’s shadowy haunt.
Despite its modern updates, Red Square is nonetheless a traditional Turkish bathhouse, something that might conjure intimidating images of naked men collectively bathing. (Or mobsters brokering deals behind a mysterious veil of steam, which was perhaps accurate at one time).
I myself was intimidated when as a kid my uncle first dragged me through the fogged sauna doors. But years later, when I returned on my own, I was able to appreciate the sensation of being swallowed by steam and spit out as a revitalized person.
I've since been back many times, but as I learned during that first visit as an adult, even if you enjoy what it does to your body, the heat of the Turkish (or “wet”) sauna can do funny things to your brain. Here's what happened to me, best I can recall through the haze.
Tips for First-Timers
What’s Included
For $35, you get a full day’s access to the wet and dry saunas, whirlpool hot tubs, cold-plunge pools, and relaxation areas; spa treatments are extra. Red Square provides sandals, towels, a robe, and a sheet.
The Whole Nudity Thing
Yes, flesh is on full display, but the atmosphere is nonsexual and nonthreatening. Still, there are ways to maneuver around this. For instance, you can keep the sheet around your waist while in the sauna or even wear a swimsuit. But for my money, it’s best to leave your inhibitions in your locker with your clothes.
This video is only of the men's section and not the women's.
Ease Your Way In
After I stow my things in a locker, I usually begin with a rinse in the private shower, take a quick soak in the hot tub, and spend a few minutes in the steam room to acclimate my body to the heat. Then I move on to the Turkish sauna.
Take a Break
Between saunas and soaks, I like to don the robe, kick back on a lounge chair, and zone out or read. I’d recommend something light, but there are also flat-screen TVs to keep you occupied. I’m not a massage guy, but upstairs, therapists offer massages (from $80/hour) if that's your thing. Margarita says that the ideal time for a massage is after the sauna—your muscles will be pliable from the heat and primed to be molded.
No Jacket Required
Dining in your robe is encouraged at the upstairs restaurant, which serves fresh watermelon salads and Russian entrees. I’d recommend drinking plenty of water, but don’t pass up the Moscow Mule cocktail. The cold vodka is a nice capper that gives me the nudge I need to reenter the real world.
Orthodox Christians in Russia and Ukraine brave icy epiphany dip
(19 Jan 2018) Hundreds of Russians and Ukrainians took a dip in icy waters in freezing cold temperatures on Friday to celebrate Epiphany, a major holiday in Orthodox Christianity marking the birth and baptism of Jesus.
Water blessed by a priest on the Epiphany week in Orthodox tradition is considered holy and pure, and bathing is believed to have healing powers.
In the small town of Handyga, in the Sakha Republic of Russia, about 100 men and women went into freezing cold water while the air temperature was -49 degrees Celsius.
People were brought by bus to an ice hole prepared the night before and jumped into it in turns to go through the extremely cold ritual.
The Orthodox believe that taking a dip in the blessed waters purifies one's soul, takes away sins and brings good health.
Still the ritual is quite extreme and not many dare to try it.
The first dip takes your breath away but then your body starts burning, said a local resident of Handyga after a quick cold dive.
Sakha Republic is known for being one of the coldest places in Russia.
In Yakutsk, special tents are set up each year for those who want to take a dip.
People have a warm place to change, aren't scared away by the wind and get into the water from a more comfortable environment.
In Moscow, ice holes are prepared each year in all the districts and people usually dive outside, without tents. This year they were diving in at -9C.
In Kiev, capital of neighbouring Ukraine, brave believers tend to run into the waters of the Dnipro River straight from the shores, if the river isn't frozen, in the Epiphany ritual.
On Friday the temperature in Kiev was zero degrees Celsius.

Russian Banya Culture: Wood, Fire and Beatings
With a first glance a Russian banya involves a lot of wood, fire, leafy brooms and beatings. WSJ's Dipti Kapadia takes a break from the Sochi 2014 winter games to find out what the Russian relaxation culture is all about up in the mountains.

What do you know about “Russian Banya”?

Source
As we can see the Russian Banya is loved by every culture far and wide, the question is why is there such an attraction? In Russian folklore there is a story that the banya was inhabited by a spirit known as Bannik.
Bannik was said to have the ability to predict the future. If one wanted to be consulted by him they would stand with one’s back exposed in the half-open door of the Banya. He would gently stroke one’s back if all boded well, but if trouble was in your future, he would strike your back with his claws.
In the reality of it all the Russian Banya is a quintessential experience that everyone should enjoy. It been around since medieval times, and was a staple for culture, health, and a place where even business affairs were held. It’s easy to imagine those who traveled the trade route from China to Europe must have taken advantage of the Banya considering the time they spent going from the far east to all points west, one can envision that even Alexander might have sat in one during his trek to India. It’s easy to see why it was a central part of the Slavic culture and not just a place for bathing and cleanliness.
Newcomers coming through Russia would be amazed by wooden Banyas where naked people warmed themselves to extremes, lashed themselves with – veniks. (branches from a birch tree). Afterwards they plunged into cold rivers and ponds to feel the revival of the soul. When Russian Princes arrived in Constantinople they made special arrangements for the use of local steaming rooms – and they were very particular about it.
Emperor Peter the Great was a fan of the Russian banya. When he founded St. Petersburg in 1703 he allowed everyone to building banyas without having to pay taxes on them. When he traveled to Paris in 1718 he ordered a banya be built for him on the banks of the Seine River in the center of the city.
Even now this ritual can be shocking to foreigners. At the first sight of a Banya some fear that they may be pushed into some mysterious sexual act. Far from it – a real banya has nothing to do with sex. It’s about staying fit and making your life longer. In modern times, however, people use banyas and saunas to hold real business talks – nobody feels the oppressive atmosphere of the office.
There is a story about an American who once came to the Russian banya . He was horrified to see Russian men in the Banya beating each other with veniks. He hastily closed the door and asked with his eyes turned to the ceiling: “Do I really want this?” “Yes” – answered the hospitable Russians.
They took him into the steaming room and worked his body with veniks for about three minutes. After that they made him jump into a pool of cold water. The American was pleasantly amazed: “You know, in some ways it is even better than sex,” he said.
As you have understood by now veniks are used to pump up the heat to give your body a good massage. It is considered very healthy, and despite the fears of many foreigners it has nothing to do with sex. However, some argue that the benefits and pleasure one gets from being beaten by a venik is just as good, if not better.
