The Turkmen Carpet Museum or the National Carpet Museum is a national museum, situated on 5 Gorogly Street in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. It opened on 24 October 1994. It has the largest collection of Turkmen carpets of any museum. It has a rich collection of Turkmen carpets from the medieval through to the 20th century, including over 1000 carpets from the 18th and 19th centuries. Aside from its extensive collection of antique carpets, it has many carpet articles, chuvals, khurjuns, torba etc. On the first floor of the museum are Tekke and Sarik carpets. The museum is noted for its huge Tekke carpets. One Tekke carpet measures 193m² and weighs a metric tonne and was made by some 40 people in 1941 to make a curtain for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Another, made in 2001, is even larger, measuring 301m² and 14 by 21.2 metres and was made to commemorate 10 years of Turkmen independence from the Soviet Union. It is recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest hand-woven carpet in the world. One carpet, made in 1968, is representative of all the tribes in Turkmenistan, fusing together the different styles to display unity. The museum also has carpets dedicated to President Niyazov. Some of the carpets on display are two-sided, often featuring different design on each side.

Carpet for Turkmenistan is so important then the Ministry of Carpet was established. In addition, every year in May, the celebration of the Carpet Festival. The Turkmenistan flag has five distinct Turkmen motifs and unique carpet motifs of the province.
Therefore, the Carpet Museum in Ashgabat must be seen. The museum is located in a 11-storey building in the center of Ashgabat. Among these carpets, which are woven between 1941-1942, the Turkmen Kalbi, which is 193.5 square meters in size, has a carpet, as well as the Golden Century -19 carpet of 301 square meters that entered the Guinness Book of Records in 2003. I must determine that all of the Turkmen carpets are hand-woven in homes and handmade rugs with yarns dyed with root paint, made of wool, cotton and silk.
All the carpets in this museum are interesting. For example, double-sided carpet. There are different motifs on both sides. While touching the carpet, it is thought that both sides will have different motifs.

Turkmen rugs have become popular in every period of the world. Even Marco Polo stated that the Turkmen carpets were very fine and beautiful carpets. This reputation of the Turkmen carpet continues today. The carpets spreading to the world through the silk road passing through Turkmenistan's land nowadays find a high price in every part of the world today
Every year, the last Sunday of May is celebrated. In those days, international symposiums are held, exhibitions are opened and various events such as theater are organized and the festival is celebrated.
HALI MÜZESİ
Türkmenistan için halı o kadar önemli ki bunun için Halı Bakanlığı bile kurulmuş. Ayrıca her yıl Mayıs ayında Halı Bayramı Kutlamaları yapılıyor. Türkmenistan bayrağında ise beş ayrı Türkmen boyunun ve vilayetinin kendine özgü halı motifleri yer alır.
Bu sebeple Aşkabat’taki Halı Müzesi mutlaka görülmeli. Aşkabat'ın merkezinde 11 katlı bir binada yer alan müzede 2000 kadar halı sergileniyor. Bu halılar arasında 1941-1942 yılları arasında dokunan 193,5 metrekare büyüklüğündeki Türkmen Kalbi adlı halının yanı sıra 2003 yılında Guinness rekorlar kitabına girmiş 301 metrekarelik “Altın Asır” halısı da bulunuyor. Türkmen halılarının tamamının yün, pamuk ve ipekten yapılmış, kök boya ile boyanmış ipliklerle evlerde ve el halısı fabrikalarında, elde dokunduğunu belirmeliyim.
Bu müzedeki halıların tamamı ilgin. Mesela çift taraflı halı. İki ayrı yüzünde de farklı motifler var. Halı dokunurken her iki yüzünün de farklı motifleri olacağı düşünülerek, tek sefer de dokunuyor.

Müze’de, Türkmenlerin gururu, halılarda kullanılan yünlerin nasıl boyanıp, ip haline getirildiği, nasıl dokunduğu anlatılıp, gösteriliyor.
Türkmen halıları her dönem dünyada rağbet görmüş. Öyle ki Marco Polo bile Türkmen halılarının çok ince işlenmiş ve güzel halılar olduğunu belirtmiş. Türkmen halısının bu şöhreti günümüzde de sürüyor. Eskiden Türkmenistan topraklarından geçen, ipek yolu vasıtası ile dünyaya yayılan halılar günümüzde de dünyanın her yerinde yüksek fiyata alıcı buluyor.
Her yıl mayısın son pazarı kutlanan halı bayramına çok önem veriliyor. O günlerde uluslararası sempozyumlar, yapılıyor, sergiler açılıyor ve tiyatro gibi çeşitli etkinlikler düzenlenerek bayram kutlanıyor.

Ashgabat Carpet Museum home to ancient treasures

Turkmen carpet - National pride of Turkmenistan
A Turkmen rug (Turkmen: Türkmen haly; or Turkmen carpet or Turkoman carpet) is a type of handmade floor-covering textile traditionally originating in Central Asia, Turkmenistan. I
The original Turkmen rugs were produced by the Turkmen tribes who are the main ethnic group in Turkmenistan and are also found in Afghanistan and Iran. They are used for various purposes, including tent rugs, door hangings and bags of various sizes.
The Turkmen Carpet Museum, which preserves examples of the original Turkmen tribal rugs, is located in Ashgabat.It is one of the cultural centers of Turkmenistan, which put about 2,000 carpet exhibits, including rare one's. For example, the museum has the smallest carpet product, designed to be worn keys. The museum conducted restoration of antique carpet. It's a challenging process - some artfully woven old specimens contain up to 1,350,000 knots. The museum is constantly updated, its employees conduct search and collection of old carpets. The new building of the National Museum of Turkmen Carpet takes overall 5089 m2.

Carpet Day is observed annually in Turkmenistan on the last Sunday of May to honour the Turkmen artisans who hand-weave remarkable textiles. Carpet making is closely intertwined with the culture and history of Turkmenistan and carpet weaving is extremely important to the national economy. Traditional Turkmen carpet patterns are depicted on the national flag and emblem of Turkmenistan, and hold significant symbolic meaning for the Turkmen people. Visitors had an opportunity to not only learn about the rich cultural history of carpet weaving, but to also see handmade Turkmen rugs.
Guest Speaker: Natalia Nekrassova, Curator, Collections and Research, Textile Museum of Canada. Nekrassova is an expert on oriental rugs and arguably one of the most knowledgeable people on Turkmen carpets in North America

Bokhara carpets, manufactured by Turkoman tribes in Western Turkestan in Central Asia. The town of Bokhara was formerly a trading place for these carpets. Nowadays the carpets are named after the different tribes and the common denomination for these Turkoman carpets. Today the name Bokhara carpets are used for carpets with a special pattern, Bokhara, a repetitive pattern with Göl motif.
