[4K] MARGATE KENT, UK WALK (2019) - Dreamland to Turner Gallery
A walk through the British coastal town of Margate, home town to artists JMW Turner & Tracey Emin. Recently its gained a reputation as an artistic and hip place to move to - earning the nickname Shoreditch on sea. But there's so much more here than great coffee shops.
We start near Dreamland - the renovated, retro theme park and concert venue, and pass beaches and old town markets to the Turner Contemporary Gallery and the curve of Margate's pier and harbour.
How do we afford to travel so often? We're lucky enough to stay for almost free in every city, using

Turner is just one of many artists with a close connection to Margate.
From Sickert’s studio in Cecil Square to Tracey Emin’s stark personal ‘love letters’ to her hometown, the town’s coastal location, rich cultural history and charm has been a constant source of creative inspiration and activity, which continues today.
The gallery and Margate’s Old Town is at the heart of an emerging creative quarter, with a growing number of art workspaces, residential studios, and independent shops, as well as a lively café and restaurant scene (largely in beautiful Georgian and Victorian buildings).
Creative spaces abound in Margate, with Crate, Limbo, Marine Studios near the High Street and seafront, Resort Studios in Cliftonville, all within walking distance of the gallery and offering different and intriguing exhibitions, events and festivals.
The New York Times in their summer 2014 article ‘The Art Crowd Return to Kent,’ says:
‘This coastal stretch on the North Sea has become a redoubt for tuned-in Londoners — London’s answer to New York City’s artsy satellites of Hudson and Beacon, N.Y. — aided by a new high-speed rail link and an expressway linking the British capital with Kent.’(Turner Website)

Antony Gormley - 'ANOTHER TIME' For Margate
ANOTHER TIME is a series of one hundred, solid cast-iron figures by Antony Gormley who is known for his sculptures and installations that explore the experience of being human, of inhabiting a human body. This sculpture which is situated in Margate, by Turner Contemporary, becomes visible about 3 hours before low tide, so to be sure of seeing it, check the daily tide times here:
Individual sculptures from ANOTHER TIME have been installed all over the world, from the River Thames in London to Kunisaki in Japan. A figure has been positioned on Fulsam Rock on the Margate foreshore, visible at low tide from our first floor balcony and from the shoreline behind the gallery.
Antony Gormley describes these isolated forms, cast from his own body as an attempt to bear witness to what it is like to be alive and alone in space and time. Made from iron, a material more usually associated with heavy industry, the industrial method of casting the sculpture is readable on its surface, whilst invisible joint lines reveal the way the plaster mould was divided and reassembled prior to casting.
The figures in this series are identical to the hundred sculptures of ANOTHER PLACE (2007), permanently sited on Crosby Beach in Liverpool. Whilst each work in ANOTHER PLACE faces the horizon, those in ANOTHER TIME all have a different orientation.
Antony Gormley (born 1950) began creating sculptures cast from his own body in 1981. His works have been shown in exhibitions and public locations internationally. He is known for his public sculptures The Angel of the North in Gateshead (1998) and Event Horizon (2007-2015), which has been shown in London, New York, Sao Paolo and Hong Kong.
