Silke Otto-Knapp Monotones at Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea
On 7 January 2017, Mary Boone Gallery opened at its Chelsea location Monotones, an exhibition of new work by SILKE OTTO-KNAPP, shown in cooperation with Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York/Rome, and curated by Piper Marshall.
The exhibition takes its title from the two-part ballet of Frederick Ashton, who, like historical and contemporary choreographers, phrased movement to compositions by Erik Satie. In this site-specific exhibition, Otto-Knapp reflects on the language and settings of performance. The artist asks us to relate painting to a “monotone,” an uninterrupted repetition, a gesture that is in extended use.
Conceived as an installation, the exhibition wraps around the architecture of the gallery. Large, multi-panel canvases, some hung continuously, others spaced apart, were scaled to the artist’s body. The works are made by applying many layers of watercolor to canvas, a process that gives form to representations of rehearsal, demonstration, and landscape. In some paintings, the pictured bodies simulate phrases of modern dance. Such demarcations question how memory inflects techniques of the body. The figures move in a compressed space between and against the backdrop and the surface of the picture plane. In others, sea meets land and sky amid an evasive horizon line. These paintings float, simultaneously insisting on a proximity and separation, coming together only to remain distinct. The historically sourced images, montaged together, gesture to the past, and yet their contemporary composition insists on the present. As the paintings wend around the gallery, they offer the experience of moving through space and time where the perspective point of one canvas fades into the next. The effect is an all-over composition that could be read as unmodulated. Its comprehension demands engagement, eliciting a recognition of duration.
Select solo exhibitions of Otto-Knapp include: the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Museo Marino Marini, Florence; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Fogo Island Arts, Canada; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen; Camden Arts Centre, London; Kunstverein München, Munich; Modern Art Oxford, Oxford; and Tate Britain, London.
The exhibition, at 541 West 24 Street, is on view through 25 February 2017. For further information, please contact Ron Warren at the Gallery, or visit our website maryboonegallery.com.

'Hammering home' his talent once more, the pioneer of nail sculpture Marcus Levine will open his new exhibition at The Air Gallery, Dover Street, on 6th September. After a successful inaugural London show, the dexterous sculptor has added to his collection by developing a series of abstract pieces. Highly skilled and multifaceted, Levine will demonstrate his versatility as a sculptor by presenting a series of both figurative and non-representational artworks.
As a result of his first exhibition in March 2010, Levine has sold pieces to private collectors worldwide; works have gone to buyers in Hungary and Greece as well as in Beirut, Singapore and China. Having had much interest from art buyers and specialists in the USA, Levine is currently amidst plans to exhibit his unique sculptures in New York next year.
Levine's shift in focus to non-representational sculpture is coupled with his use of larger nails, called clout nails, which enable him to give the pieces a heightened third dimension. Using at times up to 50,000 nails, Levine produces delicate, curvaceous images, which are testament to his skill and vision as a sculptor. With the use of a sharp and rigid material Levine is able to
create beautifully ethereal sculptures which will amaze viewers.
Light also plays an integral role in Levine's work, as from morning sun to evening sun the shadows across the sculptures change and affect the contrast, and by altering artificial lighting, the sculptures can appear as light as a pencil sketch or as dark as a charcoal drawing. Levine is
concerned with the misconception that abstract art is less skilled than that of figurative, the infinite potential of non-representational art poses many challenges to the artist.
Marcus Levine studied at Jacob Kramer Art College alongside Damien Hirst. Previous alumni include David Hockney, and both Hirst and Hockney have been an inspiration to Levine. Since completing his first 'nail sculpture' in the autumn of 2005, Levine believes he has perfected his technique, pushing the boundaries with each new work, and creating increasingly dynamic pieces.
This forthcoming exhibition will feature sculptures of female and male models and a series of abstract works.

FRAGMENTS OF MAY (2015) full short - David Foster Wallace adaptation
A mix of real accounts with a semi-autobiographical short story by DF Wallace, which visualises mental discomfort as living on a different planet to Earth, 'Fragments of May' splits the eponymous lead character into two different halves: one struggling in London in the past, the other one trying to recover in a youth clinic in the present - until the events urge the two storylines to collide.

Our Mission
The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is a non-profit institution which exists to foster awareness, exploration, and understanding of the significant art of our time. Through excellence and diversity in our changing exhibitions and educational programming, MOCA stimulates critical thinking and dialogue throughout the Hampton Roads community.
Museum Programming
Regularly changing exhibitions feature painting, sculpture, photography, glass, video and other visual media from internationally acclaimed artists as well as artists of national and regional renown. By balancing its four primary activities—gallery exhibitions, studio art classes, educational outreach programs and outdoor art shows—MOCA seeks to involve a diverse regional public in the rich and active language of contemporary visual art. By operating at a national standard, MOCA received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in 2010.

Award-winning Facility
MOCA is one the region's best examples of a private-public partnership. The building is owned and maintained by The City of Virginia Beach and MOCA operates within it as a private, non-profit. After maintaining a small oceanfront property for several years, local supporters in the late 1980's planned to construct a new physical space for the Museum. In 1989, after nearly a decade of planning, fundraising and construction, MOCA opened in its present location at 2200 Parks Avenue. The current structure, designed by Boston architect E. Verner Johnson and Associates, is approximately 38,500 square feet and features 6,300 square feet of exhibition space.
Supported By
The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art is funded in part by the citizens of Virginia Beach through a grant from the City of Virginia Beach Arts & Humanities Commission. Additional support is provided by Virginia Commission for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Business Consortium for Arts Support and The Hampton Roads Community Foundation. MOCA is also supported locally by our Partners in the Arts.

MAEP exhibition - A Constant Line
June 19--August 9, 2009
Minnesota Artists Exhibition Gallery
Free
The sculptures of Cheryle Melander and Don Myhre explore memory and the ways we contextualize the past in the present.
Melander's work investigates involuntary memory, which emphasizes the symbiotic relationship of body and mind. Through repetition, non-linear narratives, and patterns, she creates meditative environments that evaluate time. Constructing landscapes, she explores the possibility that genetically transferred memories and behaviors could be rediscovered and found through a methodology of free association.
Myhre's work is made to prompt memory of a witnessed event by building an object to commemorate its importance. They are self-made souvenirs that authenticate an experience and allow embellishment of specific aspects of each occurrence. Carefully chosen materials, objects, and processes make a clear representation, but the resulting piece is usually a nostalgic replica rather than a factually correct object.
The Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program (MAEP) is made possible by a generous grant from the Jerome Foundation.

Art for Science 2011
Creativity, philanthropy and corporate Australia came together to support child health research for the fourth biennial Art for Science event. Australia's most collectible contemporary established and emerging artists donated works for the charity art exhibition in support of the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.
The event, which has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2005, saw sixty donated works sold and auctioned off, raising over $540,000 for life saving research.
Prospective buyers were able to view the collection during the week at Nellie Castan Gallery, with the exhibition culminating at Luminare, in South Melbourne at the Chairman's preview night on Friday and the auction and party on Saturday night.
Both nights were a resounding success, with a glamorous crowd of over 470 people collectively enjoying the best food, wine and entertainment.
All funds raised goes directly to research into conditions such as diabetes, allergies, asthma, premature birth and mental health problems, conditions which are on the rise in our children, and cancer and genetic disorders that remain unsolved.
The Art for Science event has raised almost $1.5 million for child health research since 2005.
It is because of the artists' generosity that we are able to realise the Art for Science vision. We offer our sincere thanks to the artists and their galleries, and to our generous sponsors.
