Welcome to Turpan! | An Introduction to Uyghur Life in Western Xinjiang, China
Known as the Heart of Uyghur Culture, there's a reason why the tiny town of Turpan is so popular. Learn more about what to see and do in Turpan here:
Also, if you're going to be traveling to Xinjiang, don't forget to grab a copy of the FarWestChina Xinjiang travel guide, the only comprehensive guide to the entire region:

Welcome to Turpan!
Located two hours southeast of the Xinjiang capital of Urumqi, the city of Turpan offers a beautiful view of the Uyghur culture, one of the reasons it's become such a popular place to visit.
The Uyghur people make up approximately 70% of the population and their history in the region goes back thousands of years.
Turpan used to be a stop along the ancient Silk Road and many of the best places to visit in the city, including the Jiaohe Ruins (交河故城) and Gaochang Ancient City (高昌故城), allow visitors to walk among historical remnants that date back as early as 100 B.C.
In addition to ancient cities, Turpan is also home to the Bezeklik Caves (柏孜克里克), once a treasure trove of Buddhist art, the Karez (坎儿井), a Uyghur irrigation system that is an engineering marvel, the Emin Minaret (苏公塔), the Flaming Mountains (火焰山), Grape Valley (葡萄沟) and much, much more.
But enough with the tourist stuff. In my opinion, what really makes Turpan awesome is the small town atmosphere that lets you experience Uyghur culture outside the confines of a big city.
The market, the street food and especially the night life are probably as memorable, if not more so, than the sites you see during the day.
Turpan is a city you won't forget and one that you won't regret visiting.
CHINESE ADVENTURES - Xinjiang Province - Urumqi & Turpan
My husband and I spent 12 days in Urumqi with a couple of day trips over to Turpan in October 2018. We arrived when the weather was 17 degrees and left when it was 1! Xinjiang is a place constantly in the news currently for lots of reasons and tourists are advised not to go. But we wanted to make our our minds up. We are so glad we did. We got to see the the good as well as some of the bad and the ugly. Here it is.
Also: we now have a blog on our visit too:
Please excuse some of the strange cuts - some editing software trouble. Hopefully it still makes sense.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The ancient city of Jiaohe, which lies about ten kilometers west of the small town of Turpan in Xinjiang, is one of the most visually spectacular ruins of the old Silk Road. More than 1,500 years of history sits atop this 30-meter high plateau and because of this it has become one of Xinjiang’s most interesting archeological sites – certainly one that’s worth your time to visit.
The entire city ruins run 1,700 meters in length and 300 meters at the widest point. During its peak it was home to about 5,000 residents and boasted a “main street”, several monasteries, and government offices. It’s incredibly well-preserved considering its age, as you can see in the video here.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and leave a comment letting me know if you've had a chance to visit (or what you thought about your visit!).

China:
Beijing (formerly romanized as Peking) is the capital of the People's Republic of China and the world's third most populous city proper. It is also one of the world's most populous capital city. The city, located in northern China, is governed as a direct-controlled municipality under the national government with 16 urban, suburban, and rural districts.[9] Beijing Municipality is surrounded by Hebei Province with the exception of neighboring Tianjin Municipality to the southeast; together the three divisions form the Jingjinji metropolitan region and the national capital region of China.Beijing is the second largest Chinese city by urban population after Shanghai and is the nation's political, cultural, and educational center. It is home to the headquarters of most of China's largest state-owned companies, and is a major hub for the national highway, expressway, railway, and high-speed rail networks. The Beijing Capital International Airport is the second busiest in the world by passenger traffic. The city's subway network is among the longest and busiest in the world. The city's history dates back three millennia. As the last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, Beijing has been the political center of the country for much of the past eight centuries. The city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, parks, gardens, tombs, walls and gates,[14] and its art treasures and universities have made it a center of culture and art in China.[14] Encyclopædia Britannica notes that few cities in the world have served for so long as the political headquarters and cultural centre of an area as immense as China. Beijing has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian, as well as parts of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal.Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and was chosen to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, which will make it the first city to ever host both events.Wikipedia

Is Xinjiang safe? Our first hand road trip experience!
Day 6 of my Journey to the West is a travel day. We're heading further west, driving for hours and hours. Although we're driving for hours on end, it doesn't get old at all. With every 100 kilometers we drive it seems like I'm in a different country. The landscape changes continiously. I see desert, rock formations, high peaks with snow, and finally grasslands.
We leave Gansu province behind us and head into Xinjiang. Entering this province is easy for my travel partners, for me it takes quite the effort. Luckily I'm not on my own and have my travel partners with me to help me out.
The day ends on the grasslands not far from Lake Barkol where I see an amazing sunset and meet a real friendly Kazakh.

What are the best parts of the Uighur cuisine here in China's far western Xinjiang region? There are so many, but if I had to distill it down to a top 10 list, this is what I would say:
1) *Uyghur Polo or 抓饭*: this is an amazing rice pilaf that is common all over Central Asia but is a specialty of the Uyghur people here in Xinjiang.
2) *Laghman or 拉面*: a bowl of noodles - this is part of both the Uyghur cuisine and the Hui cuisine here - that has a concoction of meat and vegetables poured on top.
3) *Lamb Kebabs or 烤肉*: delicious lamb meat on a stick. Need I say more?
4) *Uyghur bread or 馕*: there are so many different kinds of Uyghur bread that you can find in Xinjiang, China. Try them all!
5) *Uyghur Ice Cream or 维吾尔冰淇凌*: It's ice cream with a Uyghur twist :)
6) *Samsa or 烤包子*: I think of this like a Uyghur Hot Pocket. It's a baked snack that is filled with lamb meat and onions.
7) *DaPanJi or 大盘鸡*: This literally translates to Big Plate Chicken and it's...well...a big plate of chicken! :)
8) *Stuffed Lamb Intestine*: Don't knock it until you try it!
9) *Matang or 麻糖*: a specialty Uyghur street snack that is a chewy
mixture of nuts and seeds.
10) *Xinjiang fruits*: Xinjiang produces more fruits than any other part of China and there's always something fresh to buy on the street.
