USA 2010 : Albuquerque & Turquoise Trail (New Mexico)
Turquoise Trail Natl Scenic Byway
Eclectic. That's the best word to describe the discoveries you will make on this drive from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. It's not the fast way, or the short way... but it is, arguably, the best way to travel between two of New Mexico's key cities

VIDEO: Visit Madrid, New Mexico on the Turquoise Trail with me
The National Scenic Byway, Turquoise Trail, is a 70-mile mountain back road connecting Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Dotted by ghost towns being restored by writers, artists and other urban refugees, turquoise, gold, silver, tin, lead and coal have been mined here. The ex-coal-mining town of Madrid is quaint with weathered houses and old company stores being repaired and turned into boutiques and galleries. The movie Wild Hogs was filmed here and the Mineshaft Tavern is a great place to eat.

We began our New Mexico adventure on the Turquoise Trail from Albuqerque to Santa Fe. Desert scrub and total isolation...just how we like it!

adrid is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, United States. It is part of the Santa Fe, New Mexico Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 149 at the 2000 census. Today Madrid (pronounced MAD-rid) has become an artists community with galleries lining Route 14 (the Turquoise Trail). It still has remnants of its past with the Mineshaft Tavern and the Coal Mine Museum. The ending of the 2007 film Wild Hogs was set and filmed in the town.
The Turquoise Trail in High Dynamic Range, New Mexico
These are pictures I took along the Turquoise Trail, a scenic drive near Albuquerque that is dotted with near-ghost towns and other picturesque things. I used my Canon EOS 40D SLR and a Canon L-series 24-105mm lens to take them. I produced the high dynamic range shots using Photomatix Pro 3.0, and I touched the pictures up with Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0. The song in the background is Natalie Merchant's Motherland.

The Turquoise Trail HD
Take ride on the Turquoise Trail in New Mexico with expert guide and photographer Steve Stubblefield. Explore the gold mining town of Golden, walk the streets of Madrid - now an artist mecca - but once a company coal mining operation and final relax in sleepy Cerrillos, the center of turquoise mining for the area's early native peoples. Stagecoaches, cowboys, miners and shades of Zane Gray - they are still alive in the vistas of New Mexico's Turquoise Trail. Enjoy!
