BABY TURTLES HATCHING AT NIGHT | TURTLE WALK IN TANGALLE, SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka 2018: Episode 4 of 8
In Tangalle, we had the opportunity to visit a Turtle Conservation Project. We joined them on a night patrol of Rekawa Beach, where we hoped to see mother green turtles nesting. On this occasion, we were lucky enough to see two mother turtles nesting, before witnessing something very few people get to see. As one of the mother turtles made her way back out to sea, dozens of baby turtles emerged from the sand and followed her out to the shore.

Thise is an amazing chance to see large turties coming on shore to dig their nest, lay eggs, cover them and retreat back to see.
Explore Sri Lanka - Turtles Project in Kosgoda
On the way to Hikkaduwa we found this Turtle conservation project, right next to the beach, where some volunteers take care of the sea turtles and help them to return to the sea. Right now, six of the seven turtle species are considered threatened due to human actions, and five of this species go every year to lay their eggs in the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka. Because of this, Sri Lanka is considered a very good place for turtle watching, especially in the south, in a place called Rekawa and in the northwest, in a place called Kalpitiya.

Watch Sea Turtles Lay Eggs at Rekawa Beach in Sri Lanka
Our immersive experience of turtle watching in Sri Lanka happens all year round. Volunteers from
the Turtle Conservation Project will show you to the turtle site at nightfall, where you will see
mature nesting sea turtle emerge from the water and return to their natal beach. You then get to
witness the miracle of sea creatures as old as dinosaurs, give birth right in front of you!
This is the only ethical and sustainable turtle watching programme in Sri Lanka where turtles can be
observed in their natural habitat, completely undisturbed. We work with the Turtle Conservation
Project, a community which aims to safeguard the turtles’ nesting sites.

PL Tours and Travels: Eggs are collected or bought from local villagers and buried in the sand hatchery. If there is a lot o sunshine they hatch after 48 days. If it is raining it can take up to 60 days before the turtles emerge from the eggs. They are then placed in the tanks and for first 3 days remain without food to cleanse them of material ingested form the eggshell. They are then given small pieces of fish for a further 7 days. Learning to dive down into the tank to take the food. When they can do this. They can be safely released into the sea where they can fish for themselves on the coral reefs.

Rekawa Turutel Watch
Sri Lanka is globally recognised as one of the few places in the world where you can observe marine turtles in their natural habitat. Five out of seven of the world’s marine turtle species are found in Sri Lanka and come ashore in Rekawa to lay eggs, including green, loggerhead, hawksbill, olive ridley and leatherback.
The Rekawa Turtle Watch is a marine turtle conservation project which aims to protect the turtles’ nesting sites and ensure that the eggs can hatch safely. Visitors can go on ‘turtle watch’ any evening of the year, where the volunteers from the centre lead groups to the beach between 8:30pm and 11:30pm where you can watch the turtles laying eggs or returning to the sea. Waiting for turtles to appear can take a couple of hours, so patience is required. During the high season (April – July), 5-15 turtles appear each night, whereas during the low season (October – January) it is approximately 1-2. There is no guarantee that you will see a turtle, although sightings occur most nights of the year.
The centre have very strict rules about not disturbing the turtles and visitors should be aware that flash photography and white/yellow torches are not allowed. If no turtles are on the beach, visitors will wait in the centre until one appears. If no turtles are seen, the cost of the ticket can be refunded, but the centre is non-funded and so donations are welcome. Booking in advance is not necessary.
Green Turtle's Battle For Survival | Planet Earth | BBC Earth
From the moment they are born, these plucky Green Turtles from the Ascension Islands will face a huge battle to survive. Those that do survive, like their mothers did before them, will return to exactly same beach where they hatched.

Sea Turtle Rescue - Tangalle Beach - Sri Lanka

Tangalle Turtles early April 2012
Whilst in Tangalle, we took a little trip east to Rekawa beach to see a turtle laying its eggs, although a shame not to see any hatching.
Yes, I know - I'm no David Attenborough - the video is crap! But it's the best the poor 550D could do in the dark, with assistance from kind fellow turtle-watchers holding the torch for me at some points.
Highly recommend the trip (you see more with the naked eye than the video suggests) and we were glad to pay foreigner price for this one, as we could see the money was being used for a good cause - conservation of the turtles - rather than just being creamed off into some corrupt bureaucrat's pocket.
sri lanka Turtle
Five out of the seven species of sea Turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka , making it an ideal country to go Turtle Watching. Turtles are very nervous when they are looking for a place to nest and can therefore be easily scared.
The Turtle can only be approached when she starts laying the eggs because by then she is engaged in a very mechanical, almost trance-like behavior and it is unlikely for her to be frightened by spectators.
This activity involves some waiting and some walking on the beach because as with all of nature, it is the Turtle (not us) that sets the time and place of the event! The whole process of a nesting Turtle can take up to 3 hours and can include false crawls' (non-nesting emergence). Of course there is no guarantee that the Turtles come to nest every night, but sitting on a deserted beach under the open starry sky in Sri Lanka is an incredible experience in itself.
