The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile. Grand canyon national park | Grand canyon skywalk
The canyon and adjacent rim are contained within Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
Vistas
Cape Royal and Bright Angel Point are the most popular viewpoints (and for good reason – they’re spectacular).
Point Imperial, a short drive away (great for sunrise and sunset).
Hikes

Coconino Overlook via the North Kaibab Trail is a 1.4 mile roundtrip hike climbing 800 feet down.
Where to stay

$$ – Hampton Inn Kanab (located 1.5 hours drive away in the town of Kanab).
$ – North Rim Campground (open mid May to late October).
Other points of interest
Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-bottomed bridge located only 2.5 hours drive from Las Vegas.

What It's Like: Walking the Tusayan Ruins Trail
My sister visited me during the Fourth of July weekend. She wanted to see the Grand Canyon so I tagged along.
Before this trip, I thought the Grand Canyon was an overrated hole on the ground. Well, not really. It is an awe-inspiring hole in the ground...
The area around the Canyon is dotted with lodges where visitors can stay. If you have an RV, you can live in that. Camping is allowed too. For those who plan to stay for a long period of time, there are supermarkets, banks, and a post office.
My favorite part of the trip was the drive to the Canyon. Driving from Phoenix to the Canyon was like driving thru different regions of the United States. We drove thru a desert, a biome that looked like the African savannah, small and rocky hills, and pine forests.
Even though we just drove thru Flagstaff, I fell in love with the town. The town felt like Boulder, Colorado in terms of weather and people. It is a small town, but it did not feel redneck.
My least favorite part of the trip was driving thru the Navajo Indian Reservation on the way home at night. Navajo country was eerily empty. For a couple of hours, our Yaris was the only vehicle on a two-lane road. There were no trees. No dwellings. No people. No lampposts... Other than the paved road and our car, THERE WAS NO SIGN OF CIVILIZATION.
My sister and I got scared. Navajo country was beautiful in a raw and undisturbed way, but as New Yorkers we got agoraphobic. We weren't used to so much empty space. We weren't used to so much silence. Driving thru the reservation was like driving thru land that has been ravaged by a nuclear holocaust or a planet void of intelligent life. Something straight out of the movies. So surreal!

Petrified Forest National Park, as it appears today is no more than a barren, lifeless badland; however, these badlands are a living scientific laboratory which revels that millions of years ago this land flourished with large river systems, forests, prehistoric plants and animals. They are two entrances to the park; The Painted Desert visitor center is at the North entrance and the Rainbow Forest Museum and gift shop is at the South entrance. In between is a 28-mile paved scenic highway full of hills and winding curves, which displays one of the world's largest petrified wood deposits. Along the highway are pullovers and short drives to areas with walking trails and overlooks which allow for one to get a close-up view. For a different look of the Painted Desert, one should drive North from Winslow on Highway 87 for fourteen miles to the Painted Desert Rim View. The difference in colors are past amazing and worth the trip.
What can we say about the Grand Canyon? We learned about the canyon in school, saw it on National Geography, watched movies that were made in and around the canyon, read books about it; however, none of these comes close to actually standing on the rim looking out over the canyon. Which part of the rim is one standing on, the canyon has miles upon miles of rim to stand upon, with each place giving a person something different to see?
The best way to see the canyon along the South entrance road is by the South rim walking trail, which runs from Hermit's Rest to South Kaibab and covers just under thirteen miles, most of this trail is paved with only slight inclines and gives excellent views of the canyon. For the person that wishes to venture into the canyon, there are four trails from which to choose. Hermit's Rest, Kolb Studio, South Kaibab, and Grandview Trail. All four are rated as extreme difficult, with the Grandview trail recommended for experienced desert hikers only.
Leaving the visitor center and traveling Desert View Drive (hwy 64) for the next 22 miles one will follow the canyon rim with pull overs for views of the canyon and four different side roads with lookout points. Between Moran Point and Lipan point, be sure to catch the Tusayan Museum and Ruins on the right side of the road.
Red Rock State Park, just South of Sedona located along the Red Rock scenic loop is a 286-acre nature preserve with stunning scenery of the red-rock formations. The five-miles of family-oriented hiking trails is a network of interconnecting loops to vistas of red rock or the lush greenery of Oak Creek, with the Eagle's Nest loop being the highest with an elevation gain of 300-feet. The parks wildlife consists of mule deer, javelina, coyotes, bobcats and many species of birds.

Mountain Lions at Grand Canyon National Park: (Ranger Minute)
Mountain lions (Puma concolor, also called cougars or pumas) inhabit the canyons and forests of Grand Canyon National Park and are the region's only remaining large predator. Surprisingly, very little is known about this secretive animals behavior, range, and habits.
In this Ranger Minute, Park Ranger Lori Rome shares some interesting facts.
If you encounter a mountain lion:
The Arizona Department of Game and Fish says:
* Do not approach the animal. Most mountain lions will try to avoid a confrontation. Give them a way to escape.
* Stay calm and speak loudly and firmly.
* Do not run from a mountain lion. Running may stimulate a mountain lions instinct to chase. Stand and face the animal. Make eye contact.
* Appear larger. Raise your arms. Open your jacket if you are wearing one. Throw stones, branches, or whatever you can reach without crouching or turning your back. Wave your arms slowly. The idea is to convince the lion that you are not easy prey and that you may be a danger to it.
* Maintain eye contact and slowly back away toward a building, vehicle, or busy area.
* Protect small children so they wont panic and run.
* Fight back if attacked. Many potential victims have fought back successfully with rocks, sticks, caps, jackets, garden tools, their bare hands, and even mountain bikes. Since a mountain lion usually tries to bite the head or neck, try to remain standing and face the animal.
* Report all mountain lion attacks to 911.

We spent five days in the Grand Canyon!
Two of them were spent hiking and backcountry camping at Clear Creek.
We were completely blown away by how diverse the landscapes were here, especially once we started to hike the backcountry down in the Canyon - a true highlight of our time road tripping through the USA :)

A Visit to Slide Rock Park Near Sedona, Arizona
Watch HD clips from Slide Rock Park, named after the famous Slide Rock, a stretch of slippery creek bottom including a natural water chute. Filmed on a balmy Arizona day in April 2013, this video shows the chute as well as deeper pool areas where swimmers can jump off short cliffs into the water. The water temperature the day this was filmed was a chilly 52F, but that didn't stop most vacationers have jumping in and having fun.
