Scuba Dive Poor Knights Islands New Zealand
For more information & to book:
Internationally recognised as the best sub-tropical diving in the world, the Poor Knights Islands are on every diver's 'must-do' list. Jacques Cousteau ranked them as one of the top ten sites anywhere.
Dive Tutukaka is NZ's premier charter operator, with professional crew, full equipment hire, 364 days a year, top service, reliability and safety.
World-class underwater experiences for every level, from first-timer to wreck diver to dive master.
Diving at the Poor Knights is rewarding at all times of the year. Mid January to late April presents excellent all round diving. The water is warm 20-23 Celsius (70F) and the water is clear averaging 20 meters visibility. This is the summer season so you can expect mild air temperatures too.
From May to early September the visibility is excellent while the temperature falls to a winter low of 15-16 Celsius. Often calm periods of weather occur over this time and visibility in excess of 30 meters can be encountered.
Between September and early January the water is warming. Plankton can reduce visibility to as little as 10 to 15 meters at times. However there is a great abundance of fish during this time. The plankton feeders have a limitless source of food and of course the predators are here.

Shark fishing in Papamoa, New Zealand (Bronze Whaler)
An unidentified woman fishing for sharks hauls in large bronze whaler shark. Filmed on Papamoa Beach, New Zealand, 2017.
I didn't film the whole event (because I had an excited dog I was trying to keep under control), but they measured the shark and tagged it at the base of its dorsal fin with a small rubber tag, before releasing it. The shark's details are entered into an online database, so if it is ever caught again you can track any change in its length, its movements and where it's been breeding.
They also work as fast as they can and make sure that water is moving over the sharks gills as much as possible, to try and minimise any distress caused to the shark.
EPISODE 2 // SNORKELING IN NEW ZEALAND!
The EPIC Family Road Trip: Episode 2 // Snorkelling At Poor Knights Islands, Northland, New Zealand 04/26/17.
While we are here exploring the Northland region of New Zealand, we decided to take the advice of some friendly locals we met in Ragland to go snorkelling in Poor Knights Islands!
This was an EPIC and unforgettable adventure that has definitely been a highlight to our trip, and an experience that was not only extremely fun but fascinating and educational.
This is the perfect half day activity for any family who wants to learn the geological and cultural history of the islands and many fascinating facts about the marine life that you also get to experience first hand as you snorkel and dive through rock arches surrounded by vibrant colours and sunning sea creatures.
