Footage of Leigh On Sea Marina, with seagull, fishmonger and sea.Leigh-on-Sea is situated on the northern side of the Thames Estuary, only a few miles from the open waters of the North Sea to the east, and a similar distance from the Kent coast to the south. The coastal environs of the town feature a nature reserve at Two Tree Island and a centrally located beach adjacent to Bell Wharf. At low tide, Leigh's foreshore has a wide expanse of mud flats and creeks, extending offshore towards the deep water channel of the Thames (Yantlet Channel). Leigh is approximately 40 miles from central London via road and rail networks and is considered part of the London commuter belt

Visiting Leigh-on-Sea
Leigh-on-Sea, which is also referred to as simply Leigh, is a district of Southend-on-Sea in the south of the county of Essex. The town itself lies on the northern side of the River Thames estuary, and although close to the open North Sea, it is still only 40 miles from Central London.
Archeologists have fouynd evidence of settlements during the Roman era, and the area has been settled ever since. With a maritime, fishing and agricultural background, Leigh-on-Sea is better known now as a suburb of Southend-on-Sea although it is still a charming place to visit with its waterfront, lovely High Street and the St Clements Church. For those looking for home estate agents Leigh On Sea is a costal town built on the Thames Estuary off the North Sea. From sandy beaches and marshland a trip up The Cliffs brings you too a picturesque town full of restaurants, pubs and small niche shops. Spreading out from the town centre are many residential properties broken up by trees & parks.
As of 2001: 9,015 people live in Leigh with 5606 people at working age. Leigh's within the Borough of Southend with a population of 158,800 people and 74,300 households. In 2004 unemployment was at 2.9%. There are approximately 468 km of highways and 13 km of sea -defences.
A beautiful National Nature Reserve, 6 parks and one a golf course is reason enough to visit Leigh. When you add a 15th Century Church, the sadly now closed Grand Hotel (once visited by Laurel and Hardy), a family beach, a warm summer's day and cold beer in Old Leigh... it's even easy to stay!
St Clements Church is located off Leigh Hill on the upper cliffs overlooking Old Leigh. This section of these cliffs is the only part in Leigh that has not suffered from subsidence; this interesting fact can only be explained in one of two ways... significant hindsight on the architecture's part, or it is being looked after by a greater power - you decide!
Home estate agents Leigh On Sea can also offer advice, for instance a church building has been present on the site since about the 13th century, however this is no longer in existence. Currently the oldest part of the church is its ground design from the 15th century and a bowl of a piscina. The piscina is a stone basin near the altar in Roman Catholic and pre-Reformation churches for draining water used in the Mass. It is also Latin for fish. The parish church was dedicated to St. Clement, who was martyred by being bound to a heavy anchor and thrown into the sea during the rule of Emperor Trajan; given the church's close location to the sea a fairly appropriate and honourable name.
Leigh Rectory, now Leigh library, resides on the upper part of the cliffs overlooking Leigh old town on The Broadway, Leigh-on-Sea. This building was commissioned by Robert Eden when he became rector in 1837, and was completed in 1838. In terms of era it's a late Georgian (1714-1837) come early Victorian (1837-1901) build .The previous building, The Old Rectory was pulled down by Robert Eden when he was instituted as the Rector, replacing his predecessor the Rev. J.D. Hodge.
The Pilgrims were the English settlers who founded Plymouth Colony, the first permanent European settlement in New England, America. They were originally known as the Forefathers and occasionally Founders; the term Pilgrim was first used to describe them in the writings of colonist William Bradford.
The Mayflower (alternative for Hawthorne plant) was the name of the the ship captained by Christopher Jones that brought the pilgrims from Plymouth in England to North America in 1620. A second ship called the Speedwell also attempted the journey but started leaking and returned to Plymouth (England) - leading to its passengers traveling on the now crowded Mayflower. The ship headed towards Virginia, where the colonists had been authorized to settle. Unfortunately as a result of stormy weather and navigational errors, the vessel failed to make good its course, and on November 21 the Mayflower rounded the end of Cape Cod and dropped anchor off the site of present-day Provincetown, Massachusetts.
According to home estate agents leigh on sea 1085 is The First known record of Leigh-on-Sea is within the Domesday Book which was compiled between 1085 and 1086, some 915 years ago. Leigh-on-Sea was part of the Hundred of Rochford and was originally called Legra.
