Inside Juvenile Detention
As recently as 2005, the state of Virginia had eight centers like Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, housing more than 1,300 delinquent youth. But by 2017, after a series of reforms, that number had shrunk to one.
“It's not that you can't do good work here,” said Andy Block, who, since 2014, has served as the juvenile-justice department’s director. “But the place itself and the design and the size and the location are barriers to doing good work.” Block and others are working to close Bon Air and replace it with something that reflects the juvenile justice reforms that have taken hold in Virginia and across the country—a system that once focused on confinement is now dedicated to rehabilitation. In recent years, more than 70 percent of Virginia's juvenile inmates were rearrested within three years of their release.*

*This documentary originally stated that Virginia has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country. This characterization was based on incomplete data. The documentary also stated that the three-year rearrest rate for current Bon Air inmates would be 74 percent. This was the rate for former juvenile inmates in Virginia in 2014. We regret the errors.

The third African-American Experience Lecture, No Rights Which the White man Was Bound to Respect: Racial Capitalism and Empire in the Age of Dred Scott by Walter Johnson on April 21, 2016.
Walter Johnson, is a professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. He is also the author of Soul by Soul and River of Dark Dreams: Slavery and Imperialism in the Mississippi Valley. In this presentation, Johnson uses Dred Scott's personal struggle for freedom and the controversial outcome of his US Supreme Court case as a lens to help illuminate the central role of St. Louis in the imperialist and racial capitalist history of the United States. In addition to his research and role as Winthrop Professor of History, Johnson is director of Harvard's Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History.
The African American Lecture series explores the history of black Americans in Missouri from the earliest period of statehood to the present.
This lecture series offers the Mizzou and Columbia community opportunities to gain a new understanding of present-day Missouri by learning about the history of African Americans within the state. This series is a collaboration between the Division of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity, and the State Historical Society of Missouri's Center for Missouri Studies.

In a motion filed in Brooklyn on Monday, his legal team argued that he couldn’t flee due to lack of funds and a passport, per the *Chicago Tribune,* and that he’s been held under unfair conditions—that is, only one of his two formerly live-in girlfriends has been allowed to visit at a time. “Presently, he is only allowed one unrelated person to visit,” his lawyer Steven Greenberg wrote. “In other words, although he lives and has lived with two lady friends, only one of them is allowed to be on his visiting list, and after 90 days he is required to switch. No other friends or professional colleagues are allowed to visit. That is not right.” When the motion was argued in court on Wednesday, however, Brooklyn federal judge Ann Donnelly didn’t bite. She said that Kelly’s finances are “murky, to say the least,” and that home detention “certainly would do nothing to deter” him from intimidating witnesses. In July a federal grand jury in Chicago indicted Kelly on 13 counts, which include “enticement of a minor and obstruction of justice, in addition to the child pornography charges,” according to the assistant United States attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Brooklyn federal prosecutors separately indicted him on one count of racketeering and four counts of violating the Mann Act, which “prohibits transporting people across state lines for the purpose of prostitution.” Three of the five victims in that indictment were minors at the time of the alleged abuse. In January the Lifetime docuseries Surviving R. Kelly renewed interest in the controversy that’s surrounded the singer for the majority of his career, spanning back to the ’90s. And due process will continue at the pace of the courts: Donnelly set Kelly’s criminal trial date for May 18, 2020, Page Six reported, and she expects it to last about three weeks — The best-dressed stars at the 2019 Emmys— A sprinkle of Meghan magic in Cape Town— Nancy Pelosi masters impeachment style— Cracking the mysteries of The Masked Singer’s strangest creation— Will this wedding gift save the environment?— From the Archive: The undisputed philosopher prince who saved Chanel Looking for more? US R&B singer R Kelly released from jail
(10 Mar 2019) US R&B SINGER R KELLY RELEASED FROM JAIL
R&B singer R Kelly has been released from a Chicago jail after a US$161,000 child support payment was made on his behalf.
Kelly was freed on Saturday (9 MARCH 2019), three days after a judge ordered him jailed until he paid the total amount of back child support that he owed.
The singer was charged last month with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse pertaining to four women, including three who were minors when the alleged abuse occurred. He has denied wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Kelly spent a weekend in jail after his arrest last month and wasn't freed until a Chicago business owner posted his US$100,000 bail. At the time, his defence attorney said Kelly's finances were a mess.
Kelly told CBS This Morning during an interview this past week that people had stolen money from his bank accounts. He offered no details.

U.S. Senate: Impeachment Trial (Day 2)
The Senate impeachment trial of President Trump continues (starts at 9:55) on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Senators will consider the rules for the trial and other legislative work is possible.
R Kelly girlfriend charged after fight at singer's condo
(9 Jan 2020) R KELLY GIRLFRIEND CHARGED AFTER FIGHT AT SINGER'S CONDO
A fight between two of R. Kelly's girlfriends inside the embattled singer’s Trump Tower condominium has led to a domestic battery charge against one of the women and sent the other to the hospital, Chicago police said Thursday.
Joycelyn Savage, 24, was taken into custody after allegedly punching a 22-year-old woman in the face Wednesday, police said, and Savage was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery.
It wasn't immediately known if Savage had a lawyer in the battery case.
The brawl between the women - Kelly's two recent live-in girlfriends - began shortly after 2 p.m. when Chicago police were called to the Trump Tower building for a “battery in progress” involving two women, Chicago police Officer Anthony Spicuzza told the Chicago Tribune.
The women were separated and when officers arrived, the 22-year-old woman told them that she and Savage had an argument that became physical when the older woman allegedly hit her in the face.
Savage, whose home address is listed in the same block as Trump Tower, fled but later turned herself in to police and was arrested on signed complaints, police said. Her next court date was scheduled for Feb. 6 at the county’s domestic violence courthouse.
The younger woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in good condition, Spicuzza said.
“It was a battery; it was a fight, but I don’t know what condition she’s in,’’ Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said, adding that the injuries were not serious enough to threaten her life.
A series of videos posted to Instagram show the 22-year-old woman angrily confronting Savage before a scuffle broke out between the two. In one video, the 22-year-old told officers she was in the unit with a few other people when Savage and another woman - a “handler” for Kelly - arrived to pick up Kelly’s “awards and his Grammys and stuff,” the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
“She came to me and attacked me and I had to defend myself,” the 22-year-old told police, alleging that Savage hit her with her hands and her phone and tried to kick her, as well.
The 22-year-old's name came up last month in Brooklyn, New York, when prosecutors there asked for any Cook County marriage records, records show. The 22-year-old had until recently lived with Kelly at the Trump Tower address.
Kelly, 53 on Wednesday, is being held without bond in Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center. He is charged with a variety of crimes in three states. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to federal charges in Chicago and New York of a racketeering scheme to sexually abuse girls. Kelly is also accused in Minnesota of offering a 17-year-old money in 2001 to take off her clothes and dance. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
A documentary series chronicling Kelly’s alleged sexual abuse of minors is currently being aired on Lifetime.

Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 24, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
Opening arguments in President Trump’s impeachment trial began on Jan. 22 in the Senate. House managers, led by Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.), will present three days of opening arguments. Then, senators will have 16 hours to ask questions in writing. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. will read the questions out loud, and the appropriate side — defense or prosecution — can answer them.
President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.
