TWYFELFONTEIN COUNTRY LODGE
LODGE | DAMARALAND | #NAMIBIA
Welcome to Twyfelfontein Country Lodge. A true landmark situated in the heart of one of the world’s most magnificent wilderness regions. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein in Damaraland is home to one of the largest collections of rock-art engravings found in Southern Africa. Not only did the Khoi-San and tribes of ancient years leave us with a true cultural heritage, but the whole area is characterised by natural wonders such as Doros Crater, Burnt Mountain, Organ Pipes, Petrified Forest and desert adapted animals – of which the desert adapted elephant is probably the most well-known species.
Nestled along the mountainside, the lodge beautifully blends in with its surrounding environment. Using natural stone, carefully selected paint colours and thatched roofs, its design compliments the sandstone rock formations with minimum visual impact on this picturesque landscape. Magnificent views from the deck over the Huab Valley, desert plains and distant mountains provides for hours of relaxed comfort, peace and tranquility.
Twyfelfontein is much more than just accommodation; it is a destination in itself.

Nothing quite prepares you for seeing a desert elephant trying to stand on his back legs to get a branch off a tree to eat. Life is tough for the elephants in the desert. But the beauty of the desert did not disappoint.

Namibia 2016: The Twyfelfontein Petroglyphs
One of the unique sights in Damaraland arthe petroglyphs of Twyfelfontein. A 35 min drive from the Doro Nawas Lodge through spectacular desert landscapes brought us to a place which is World renown for being the finest rock petroglyphs in Africa. Scattered among the shattered red boulders and rocks on the side of a steep hill are over 2000 rock engravings and paintings dating back 6000 years. Painted by shamen, who in a trance, would transcend into the animals they hunted, painting/carving them in a surrealistic manner. As such, they ‘became’ the animals. The climb to see these things was clearly not for the faint-hearted nor for those whose health or eye sight is not the best. Thus, it was by default that the old mountain goat (yours truly 69 years old) was to accompany Will (our 28 year old guide) up the crumbling and difficult pathways and steps to reach the best of the rock art. I have to say it was a stunning experience…. I was chuffed that I not only kept up with the youngster but at times was ahead of him – even when he got us lost on a rock face! In the evening light the petroglyphs were picked out in soft reds and oranges. All alone up there, you could almost feel a shaman’s whisper on the soft evening breeze…..
Just a lovely way to spend a winter’s afternoon in Damaraland.
Twyfelfontein & Damaraland / Namibia 2015 - Part III
Twyfelfontein & Damaraland Highlights;
Leaving the Skeleton Coast behind we enter what I call Flintstone Country in Namibia. A very rocky, dry and what appears to be a desolate landscape. Well, desolate and isolated it might be, but here I found two of the most intriguing and gentle people who inhabit this land. The Damara People and the Himbas.
The Damara People
Widely believed to be the oldest inhabitants of Namibia after the Bushmen and the Nama, and sharing a similar language and customs with the Nama, the precise origins of the Damara remain something of a mystery.
Following the establishment of German colonial rule over Namibia, the first Damara 'reserve' was created in 1906 around the Okombahe area. This original area was enlarged upon the recommendations of the Odendaal Commission of Inquiry in the 1960s, when so-called tribal homelands were created for the different ethnic groups in Namibia. The Damara 'homeland' was established in the northwest of the country.
They speak the Khoekhoe language which is one of the clicking languages.'
The Himbas
All over Africa there are tribes who respect and live according to the traditions of their ancestors. Examples include the Maasai tribe in Kenya, the Pygmies in Congo. However, the one that intrigues me the most is the Himba tribe in north-western Namibia.
The first settlements of the Himba people can be traced back to the early 16th century when they crossed the Angolan border and chose Cunene region as their new homeland. At that time the word Himba did not exist because of the fact that they had not yet separated themselves from the Herero tribe.
The red ochre cream that the Himba are famous for is made by pounding the ochre stone (Hematite) into small pieces. Thereafter the fragments are mixed with butter, slightly heated by means of smoke and applied on the skin. After many conversations with the elders of the tribe I have come to the conclusion that the main reason for the red ochre is to establish a difference between men and women. Moreover, the red layer seems to help against the scorching sun radiation, while keeping the skin clean and moist and to some extent it blocks hair growth on the body.
On top of the women’s head in the picture you find the Himba crown: the Erembe. This crown is made of cow or goat leather and is placed on the head when a girl reaches puberty. The red ochre, however, is applied when the girls are old enough to look after themselves hygienically. The tribe’s men do not apply red ochre on their skin.
The Himba people stick to porridge. Every morning and evening they heat some water, wait until it boils, and put some flour in it, maybe add some oil and food is served. The flour is mostly from maize but from time to time you might find some mahangu flour as well.
Twyfelfontein
Twyfelfontein is an 'open-air gallery' with the largest single concentration of rock art engravings in southern Africa. There are over 2000 rock engravings and a few rock paintings at Twyfelfontein. More than 200 giraffe and 100 rhino are shown as well as ostrich, impala, elephant and zebra. Predators like lion are scarce, although one particular lion is exceptional. Kudu, wildebeest and baboons are also rare in the engravings. Although human figures are common in the rock paintings, they rarely occur in the engravings.
Petrified Forest
The name is a bit misleading as it is not exactly a forest, which turned to stone, but rather an accumulation of enormous fossilized tree trunks about 280 million years old. Scientist found out that these trunks haven’t grown in today’s Namibia but were washed down a river in ancient times when one of the many Ice Ages ended on the Gondwana continent. There must have been a huge flood that carried along the trunks to where they lie today.
This flood also carried a lot of sand and mud which covered the trees to such an extent that air intrusion was prevented and consequently no decay took place. The organic material of the trunks was conserved. Due to enormous pressure and over a period of millions of years even the finest structures of the wood have been dissolved by silicic acid and replaced by quartz, which is silicic acid in crystalline state. The result is perfectly conserved and completely petrified trunks.
Thanks to erosion many of these trunks are now exposed and amongst many smaller specimens two fully exposed trees measuring up to 45 m have been discovered.

White Lady / Brandberg / Twyfelfontein - NAMIBIA

In the north-west Namibia is one of Damaraland, in whose center stands the Brandberg Massif. My journey continues past the former mining town of Uis, which once had the largest tin mine, we visit a Herero dealer and visit the Burnt Mountain, which evolved from cooled lava. The organ pipes are a 100 million year old basalt rock. In Twyfelfontein there are up to 6,000 year old rock paintings. UNESCO has declared the Twyfelfontein World Heritage Site. At the end of my way through the savannah, we come to the Petrified Forest. The logs are approximately 300 million years old. Africa always surprised.
