Barnsley keep League One promotion race alive ahead of Luton’s clash with Wimbledon
Barnsley keep League One promotion race alive ahead of Luton’s clash with Wimbledon. BARNSLEY kept the League One promotion race alive with a thumping 3-0 win at abject Plymouth after Portsmouth had kept the pressure on earlier in the day with a narrow 2-1 victory over Coventry.
A late Brett Pitman goal saw Pompey complete the comeback at Fratton Park after Tom Naylor's strike had cancelled out Jordy Hiwula's impressive early opener for the Sky Blues.
But Barnsley's win, with first-half goals from Cauley Woodrow, Jacob Brown and Alex Mowatt, meant the Tykes leap-frogged Portsmouth into second maintaining their two-point lead over Kenny Jackett's men albeit having played a game extra.
Late drama at London Road saw Sunderland throw away the chance to go third as Matt Godden's 91st minute winner broke Sunderland hearts after Max Power's 87th minute strike had seemingly clinched a late win.
Southend were the other winners of the day as a thrilling 3-2 home win over Burton saw them soar out of the League One relegation zone leapfrogging three teams in the process.
In a thrilling afternoon at Roots Hall Southend recorded their first win since a 4-0 romp at Bradford in January.
The Seasiders' Sam Mantom was the first-half's only scorer before the teams traded goals during a nervy second-half with Harry Bunn and ex-Bradford man Timothee Dieng notching for the home side while John Brayford and Marcus Harness struck for the visitors.
Wimbledon and Scunthorpe were the victims of the Shrimpers' success as the latter slid into the drop-zone after a 4-0 home drubbing at the hands of promotion-chasing Charlton.
Walsall's 1-0 defeat at Wycombe makes their chances of safety look slim as they are now four points of safety with just two games remaining.
And elsewhere, already relegated Bradford were booed onto the pitch by their fans before playing out a 1-1 home draw against 13th place Gillingham in a match that couldn't really have meant much less.
The remaining two games were also meaningless though both mid-table affairs saw red cards awarded.
Shrewsbury threw away a lead to lose 3-2 at home ten-man Oxford who have Gavin Whyte's hat-trick to thank for saving the day after Ahmed Kashi was sent-off after 36 minutes.
Bloomfield Road also saw its share of drama as Nathan Delfouneso's 94th minute winner saw Blackpool climb to ninth after Nathan Sheron had been sent off for the visitors and Jay Spearing and Ched Evans had traded goals towards the end of the first-half.
Things are finely poised ahead of tomorrow's games which could have huge ramifications at both ends of the league.
Wally Downes' Wimbledon travel to Luton while play-off chasing Doncaster host relegation-threatened Accrington Stanley.
Both games kick-off at 7:45pm.
Luton can confirm promotion with a win while Wimbledon would take a step closer to a historic relegation escape if they could spoil the party.

Shock defeat sees West Ham crash out of Europe
West Ham's European adventure was brought to an end before it had really begun - by a 35-year-old who used to play for Barnsley. The Hammers crashed to their first defeat at the London Stadium, a humiliating 1-0 Europa League play-off loss to Astra Giurgiu, thanks to a goal from former Tykes and West Brom midfielder Filipe Teixeira. It meant a 2-1 aggregate defeat to the team currently 11th in Romanian Liga 1, and no place in the group stage for Slaven Bilic's side - who would not even have had to play the play-off match had they beaten Stoke on the final day of last season.
Teixeira left England in 2010 on the back of an injury-hit couple of years in the midlands and Yorkshire, but returned to score the first competitive goal against the Hammers in their new home.
A desperately disappointing evening had begun on a high note with West Ham announcing the signing of young Swiss midfielder Edimilson Fernandes from FC Sion, but once again it was evident a striker is what they desperately need.
Manchester City's Wilfried Bony and Simone Zaza of Juventus remain targets but, in the meantime, rookie Argentine forward Jonathan Calleri was handed the responsibility in attack.
But the one-on-one Calleri missed in the dying seconds against Bournemouth on Sunday may have still been playing on his mind when Reece Burke played him through early on, the ball getting stuck under his feet allowing Astra keeper Silviu Lung to save. Pedro Obiang also saw a low 25-yard drive tipped around the post by Lung, but it was uninspiring stuff from the Hammers. They paid the price on the stroke of half-time when Sam Byram's crossfield ball gave Burke too much to do and left both Hammers full-backs hopelessly out of position. Astra defender Cristian Sapunaru beat Burke to the ball and it broke to Daniel Niculae, who played a simple square pass to Teixeira as he wandered through a huge gap in West Ham's defence. With Byram desperately trying to make up the ground Teixeira was able to stride into the penalty area and slide the ball past Hammers goalkeeper Darren Randolph.
For the first time - and after just two-and-a-half competitive matches - boos rang around the former Olympic Stadium as the half-time whistle was blown. West Ham went on the attack after the break but Lung performed heroics, keeping out headers from Angelo Ogbonna and Calleri while a diving Michail Antonio could not guide in Byram's vicious cross. Sub Ashley Fletcher had a valid penalty claim waved away after he was bundled to the ground by Teixeira and was then denied by the leg of Lung from all of five yards out. Lung palmed away Enner Valencia's free-kick and tipped Fletcher's shot wide, while Antonio did beat the visiting keeper after racing clear only for play to be hauled back for a foul. The beleaguered Bilic resorted to playing centre-half James Collins in attack, but Astra survived five minutes of injury time as West Ham bowed out of Europe with a whimper.

Barnsley 0-2 Middlesbrough - FA Cup Third Round | Goals & Highlights
Jelle Vossen's second-half strike put Middlesbrough on the way to a place in round four of the FA Cup at the expense of Barnsley at Oakwell.
The Belgian fired home on his left foot from Patrick Bamford's pass to break the hosts' resistance.
Boro's Adam Clayton was sent off for two bookable offences but Daniel Ayala's late headed goal from a corner eased any lingering nerves.
Conor Hourihane's shot saved by Tomas Mejias was Barnsley's best chance.
Middlesbrough, who relegated the Tykes to League One with a 3-1 victory at The Riverside in April 2014, move into the fourth round for the third season in a row.

Stephen Graham Panter
Profile:
Comedy rap project from The Specials bassist, Horace Panter. 'Barnsley Rap' was the first release and is purported to be the first ever British hip hop record. There is some confusion as to the role Horace had on the records. He may have been the producer Ronnie Bossanova and the rapper, a local Barnsley man, Rob Allen.
