Lone Star Roses
Sam Goldwater and his family own Lone Star Rose Nursery, Inc., which has been in business since 1951. The company specializes in packaging and distributing roses, and represents a changing trend in Tyler's rose industry to handle rather than grow the flowers. Some firms that used to grow roses abandoned the practice because growing conditions in East Texas can be challenging. Few people seem to have an awareness of the industry even though Tyler is recognized as the Rose Capital. Roses packed by Goldwater's company are distributed to major retailers across the United States.

Close-up Photography in the LARGEST Rose Garden in the United States
Last Saturday, my husband and I headed out on a 2 hour drive to Tyler, Texas to see the incredible 14 acre rose garden one more time before summer sets in. We had visited 6 weeks prior and even though it was very cold and rained the whole time that day, I loved every minute out there with my camera. This time it felt like summer was already here, 80°F and humid, but the clouds were amazing all day, I think I ‘oohed and aahed’ more at them than the roses. The garden has already been affected by the higher temperatures setting in, the bushes are past their prime blooming season.
I’m learning to record video on my 5D Mark III, just started filming 3 weeks ago. I know I need some filters to help with the light when filming on my DSLR and much of this footage is shaky because I’m doing everything hand-held, using my strap outstretched to stabilize the camera as much as I can. I’ll get the hang of it soon and gradually build on the accessories I need, we also used a G7 X for some of the clips. Let me know if you have any tips for filming, I’m enjoying it so far!
