Tyneside The Blitz Trailer
On 3rd September 1939, Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. The Luftwaffe brought terror to Tyneside, wiping out many areas. Gas and water supplies ceased to function and many families were bombed out with nowhere to go. The people of Tyneside faced the carnage of war with extraordinary courage and resilience.
For the first time ever you can witness for yourself through archive footage and still photographs how Tyneside was effected as we reveal the carnage and sadly the loss of life that came with it.
The most devastating event in North Shields must be that of the bombing of Wilkinson's Lemonade Factory that was hit just before midnight on 3rd May 1941. It resulted in the death of 107 people. We bring you archive footage from that terrible tragedy.
Newcastle upon Tyne had a terrible attack by the Germans on 25th April 1941 which resulted in the death of 45 people. However, it was Guildford Place, Heaton, that took the highest number of deaths at that time with 35 of that total there. The Spillers Factory was hit and many other areas of Newcastle including Heaton Secondary School, Jesmond Park West, Cleveland Gardens. Wallsend and Gosforth also suffered bombing raids.
Looking back at North Shields we have footage from many areas including Bedford Street, West Percy Street, Thrift Street, Preston Hospital, Stanley Street West, Billy Mill and many more.
Whitley Bay is also on film too and so is Cullercoats.
This film concentrates only on Tyneside and makes this a unique World War Two film for those interested in the history of this area during the blitz.
Hear the sounds of the air raid sirens and the German bombers as they approach. Witness the explosions and fires that were tackled by our civilian personnel along with the recovery of bodies and seriously injured. Witness other civilian personnel as they help out. The ruins of buildings after the bombings and much more.

Presented and narrated by ITV Tyne Tees News presenter Pam Royle, #NewcastleonFilm is a tribute to life in this great Geordie capital.
