Haunted Tynemouth Priory, Castle & Coastal Battery - Video & EVPs
A Visit to Tynemouth provided an opportunity to take photographs, videos and some EVP sessions
An interesting place on the Tynemouth headland with a rich history including a Priory which was sacked by the Vikings soon after Lindisfarne in 793.
In 800 the Danes plundered Tynemouth Priory, whereupon the monks strengthened the fortifications sufficiently to prevent the Danes from succeeding when they attacked again in 832.
In 865 the church and monastery were destroyed by the Danes and the nuns of St Hilda, who had come there for safety, were massacred.
The priory was again plundered by the Danes in 870 and was destroyed by the Danes in 875
The site incorporates a castle, A Priory which had 3 kings buried there and a coastal batter
In 651 Oswin, king of Deira was murdered by the soldiers of King Oswiu (St Oswin) of Bernicia, and subsequently his body was brought to Tynemouth for burial. His burial place became a shrine visited by pilgrims.
In 792 Osred II, who had been king of Northumbria from 789 to 790 and then deposed, was murdered. He also was buried at Tynemouth Priory.
The third king to be buried at Tynemouth was Malcolm III, king of Scotland, who was killed at the Battle of Alnwick in 1093
Well worth a visit if you are in the Tynemouth area

During my visits to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne I always go to Tynemouth....
The headland towering over the mouth of the Tyne has been settled since the Iron Age. The Romans occupied it. In the 7th century a monastery was built there and later fortified. The headland was known as PEN BAL CRAG
The place where now stands the Monastery of Tynemouth was anciently called by the Saxons Benebalcrag
—Leland at the time of Henry VIII
The monastery was sacked by the Danes in 800, rebuilt, destroyed again in 875 but by 1083 was again operational.
Three kings are reputed to have been buried within the monastery - Oswin - King of Deira (651); Osred II - King of Northumbria (792) and Malcolm III- King of Scotland (1093). Three crowns still adorn the North Tyneside coat of arms. (North Tyneside Council 1990).
The queens of Edward I and Edward II stayed in the Priory and Castle while their husbands were campaigning in Scotland. King Edward III considered it to be one of the strongest castles in the Northern Marches. After Bannockburn in 1314, Edward II fled from Tynemouth by ship.
A village had long been established in the shelter of the fortified Priory and around 1325 the then Prior built a port for fishing and trading. This led to a dispute between Tynemouth and the more powerful Newcastle over shipping rights on the Tyne which continued for centuries. (source:wikipedia)

Collingwood Monument And Tynemouth Castle and Priory England
Tynemouth Castle and Priory on the coast of North East England was once one of the largest fortified areas in England. Overlooking the North Sea and the River Tyne, it dominates the headland. With its 2000 year history and beautiful views it is the perfect location for a family fun day out. A popular spot to enjoy seaside fish and chips with a view and great location to have a picnic, lie back and enjoy the sea air.
Discover Tynemouth's story of the site from its original beginnings as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, an Anglican monastery, a royal castle, artillery fort and a coastal defence. The gun battery built underground into the cliffs was designed to defend the Tyne in the First and Second World Wars.
Collingwood Monument and guns.
Monument, 1845; guns added 1848. Base and plinth by Dobson; statue by Lough.
Sandstone ashlar and marble. High wide base, with slit openings in returns and
door in rear. Stepped side walls to wide flight of steps. Base and high pedestal
for colossal figure of Admiral Collingwood in draped cloak. Plaque on south side
of base commemorates his success at Trafalgar under Nelson and the erection by
public subscription of this memorial. 4 guns on walls flanking steps came from
his ship, the Royal Sovereign. Historical note: Collingwood was born in Newcastle
and members of his family lived at Chirton, North Shields. The statue was sited
to be seen from the sea and the river.
