bg guide - Tyulenovo
Tuylenovo (Bulgarian: Тюленово) is a village and seaside resort on the north Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, part of Dobrich Province in between Shabla and Kavarna. Tyulen means seal in Bulgarian, but seals hadn't been seen in the area since the 1980s. Tuylenovo can be reached by taking the old seaside road from Kavarna that passes along the rocky coastline, through the sea resort of Rusalka
There are about 60 permanent inhabitants, but during the summer there are close to 200 people living here. In the center there are two small hotels, a fishing harbour and a small beach. Dolphins can be seen from the coast and they usually come nearer to the land in the early morning or late afternoon. The caves in the cliffs were used as dwellings, and nowadays backpackers set up camp inside for free accommodation. There is also a great sand beach in Bolata, less than 2 kilometers from Tyulenovo.
Tyulenovo
The picturesque coast of the village of Tyulenovo is located near the town of Shabla, 30 km from the frontier post of Durankulak and 80 km from the city of Varna, close to the popular Kamen Bryag. The area is famous for its matchless sea-shore and caves, fresh air, transparent sea-water and its unique nature.
You will not experience the trivial round and city noisiness, but only untroubled and happy moments! For those who seek wilder places and want to get closer to nature, this is the place for a holiday full of value, sea fishing and underwater tourism.
The old name of the village is Kalach Kyoy (‘village of the sword’). The original name is Turkish in view of the Gagauz population (Christians of Turkic origin). Gradually many Bulgarians from the interior of Bulgaria, primarily from the Kotel region, settled in the village. In 1942 the village was renamed Tyulenovo, because of the presence of flocks of monk type seals(Monachus monachus), for which such a combination of surf, caves, low level rocks and winds appeared to be a good place for populating.
The story goes that during the 30’s of the last century the Romanian Queen Mary received as a gift a pair of seals. At first they lived in an enclosure on the shores of Balchik, but soon she decided to set them free, then they adapted and created generations dwelling in the underwater caves of Tyulenovo.
They say that seals still inhabit the cliffs to the north and to the south of the village. Others argue that in 1978, during an underwater expedition by Germans, in one of the caves a diver discovered the remains of the recently deceased last seal. Even if there were other survivors, today there are hardly any left and this is rather a myth that locals maintain for the tourists. However, you can see many dolphins jumping and getting you carried away with their play.
ou cannot forget this coast once you have visited it! The shores here are in red colours, steeps sloping down at least 20-30 meters to the sea. There are amazing underwater caves, in which diving is balm for the soul of every adventurer with aqualung. Every spot here has a name: “Ashalak”, “Kipria”, “Dupkata” (‘the hole’), “Martina”. The deepest holes are in the areas of “Martina”, “Samotnika” (‘the lonely person’) and “Samotnata Kanara” (‘the lonely rock’).
Tyulenovo is a place almost untouched by civilization, beautiful and wild. It is great for fishing and extreme sports like rock climbing and scuba diving. There is platerinata, mullet, scad and gobies, and whoever throws a fishing rod can be assured that he’ll definitely arrange dinner on the live coals of the campfire. You can hire a boat from the locals and enter into deeper waters to fish or go for a row to the caves.
The coastline is ideal for tent lovers that pitch their tents right on the rocks. The place is a favourite for climbers, as the rocks are particularly picturesque. Those who go to Tyulenovo just to feel the beauty of the coast, and don’t want to go through extreme experience, can stay at several hotels and guest houses in the village or to find something suitable as Shabla hotels or Krapets guesthouses.
The place is not suitable for those who prefer to lie stretching on the sand. That is because there isn’t any. It is good to be an experienced swimmer, because there are very few paths to a relatively flat bottom of the coast. It is advisable to monitor the meteorological conditions, because if wind appears, you are through.
On 31.05.1951 the first oil field in Bulgaria was discovered here. And today oil drillings are positioned near Tyulenovo. This does not hinder the tourists, it is rather a real attraction. When extracting the oil the pumps also extract healing sulfuric and mineral water, which they pour into the sea. The hot fluid is very useful against neuralgia and kidney diseases.
