Tyumen
Tyumen is the largest city and the administrative center of Tyumen Oblast, Russia, located on the Tura River 2,500 kilometers east of Moscow.
Tyumen was the first Russian settlement in Siberia. Founded in 1586 to support Russia's eastward expansion, the city has remained one of the most important industrial and economic centers east of the Ural Mountains. Located at the junction of several important trade routes and with easy access to navigable waterways, Tyumen rapidly developed from a small military settlement to a large commercial and industrial city. The central part of Old Tyumen retains many historic buildings from throughout the city's history.

Steve Reich - Tehillim (Tyumen Filarmony 01-04-2019) / visualization - nonpandoras
The program of the concert includes a work that has never sounded in Tyumen (Russia), which will undoubtedly arouse the curiosity of the listeners. This essay is a composer of the twentieth century, who turned to the wisdom of the ancients, trying to find answers to the acute questions of our time.
“Tehillim” is a composition to the Hebrew texts of the biblical Psalms for four female voices and ensemble.
The author of the work is American composer Stephen Michael Reich, one of the first authors of music in the style of minimalism, a direction connected with the use of very limited musical means when embodied in the content of a work of deep philosophical content.
“I composed, focusing exclusively on how I heard syllables in Hebrew. Never before had such music sounded in my head. “Tehillim” was a revelation, ”notes Stephen Reich.
Tehillim is the first major work of Reich, where he takes an interest in his Jewish roots.
Rejecting the traditional execution of the Psalms, Reich works out an absolutely original language. Psalms have their own inner rhythm, making the accents completely unexpected.
At first, when a female voice duplicated by a clarinet sounds against the background of drums and claps, the music shocks listeners who know Reich from more radical works. The strongest effect produces the final composition.
“In the synagogues of the Western world, the oral tradition of singing psalms has been lost. So, I should neither imitate the existing tradition, nor ignore it. “Tehillim” can be perceived as familiar and at the same time new music, ”notes the author.
