U BA NYEIN LACQUERWARE MAKING IN BAGAN, MYANMAR
Yun-de.” The word might not mean much to you, but Yun-de is the Myanma word for lacquerware, one of the country’s oldest and finest traditional products. The craftsmanship is thought to have originated in China in the 1st century AD. Myanmar, along with China and Japan is part of the triad of countries that produce the finest lacquerware products in the world.
Lacquerware workshop, Bagan Myanmar
Traditional Lacquerware dates from 11-th Century A. D, the golden period of Bagan. The lacquerware technique starts with a wickerwork of woven, finely cut strips of bamboo, horse hair, wood, essential material, mixture of Lacquer resin with clay, wood sawdust and ash are carefully built-up and finally polished with the ash of fossil wood. The design are then elaborately etched or painted by hand. Myanmar traditional Lacquerware drawing styles feature stories of Buddha.
BURMESE LACQUERWARE (RARE WORKSHOP TOUR!!) | EP10
Hey Everyone! In this vlog, we will take you on a Burmese lacquerware workshop tour with a fourth generation store owner.
The name of the workshop that toured us was Mya Thaw Tar Lacquerware. I highly recommend checking them out. The exact map location is pinned inside the video.
Also, this tour was not purchased online nor was it organised in advance. There are no tourists here. Just Robyn and I :-)
If you ever travel to Myanmar, especially Bagan, you will notice quite a few lacquerware workshops on the side of the road. If you are in the market to buy some authentic lacquerware products, then this is the place to buy them!
After I filmed this video, the owner requested that I not release it. But after a side conversation, he agreed to allow this video to be released. Although it is a long 30 minute video, you will see exactly how much hard work goes into making these amazing products.
I hope you enjoy this video. Let me know if you managed to watch the entire 30 minutes :-)
Have an awesome day!
Filmed: 12th December 2018
