UJ Art Gallery: Rethinking Kakotopia
The word 'kakotopia' is derived from the Greek words ‘kakos’ (bad, vile and unhappy) and ‘topos’ (place), first used by English philosopher Jeremy Bentham in his book Plan of Parliamentary Reform to describe a negative state of society where chaos and disintegration reigns, and citizens live in a dehumanised state, fearing the outside world and having lost respect for the natural world.
This group exhibition titled Rethinking Kakotopia challenges the impact of the visual interpretation of kakotopia, disputing that it should, but often does not, create awareness of the modern crisis of exclusion and violence. The exhibition tackles issues of identity, corruption, emotive nationalism, xenophobia and the rage against the killing of South Africa’s fauna. The artworks are formed as reflections on the ability of citizens and their psyches to survive and respond to the challenges of change, and rise from a state of 'kakotopia' to a state of utopia.
Featured artists include multimedia designer, art director and artist Vusi Beauchamp whose works, made through non-traditional mediums like spray painting and crayons, have been likened to an artistic version of satirical journalism and social critique.

UJ Arts Gallery presents international exhibition 'TRANS'
The UJ Art Gallery presents a selection of artworks that invites audiences in Johannesburg to question their boundaries and embrace the possibility of existing in different ways. 'TRANS' is a visionary collection of work by artists from 11 countries whose work explores transit and movement, with the aim to transcend, transpose, transgress and transform. The exhibition will run from the 15 August to 19 September at the UJ Art Gallery and share more details about the artwork we chat to Brazilian curator, Daniella Géo and South African artist, Usha Seejarim.

Black Chronicles Four exhibition at UJ
The University of Johannesburg art faculty has opened an exhibition titled Black Chronicles Four, showing rare photographs of Africans from Victorian times. The exhibition aims to redress the absence of black people from cultural archives, historical records and the history of photography.

It consists of works by predominantly South African artists such as Santu Mofokeng, Willem Boshoff, Jackson Hlunghwane, Maggie Laubser, Credo Mutwa, Noria Mabaso, JH Pierneef and Helen Sebidi. That's UJ Art Gallery's latest exhibition titled Shifting Conversations which opened on Wednesday and runs until the 22nd of November. Shifting Conversations Exhibition
University of Johannesburg (UJ) Art Gallery in collaboration with the MTN SA Foundation in an MTN sponsored exhibition entitled Shifting Conversations from 18 October to 22 November 2017 at the UJ Gallery.
The UJ Art Gallery promotes the importance of visual art as a vehicle for reflecting social constructs and debates. It aims to promote dialogue and debate on social and cultural matters, both historical and contemporary, and is reflective of the social, cultural and political diversity of Johannesburg and South Africa. As such, it engages directly with the core values of the University, namely imagination, regeneration, conversation and an ethical foundation.’ Annali Dempsey herself is looking back on 21 years of curating the UJ Art Gallery because she strongly believes that it is important to look at the world around you through the eyes of artists.

DISCUSSION: UJ hosts 'Booknesses' exhibition
Well-known art collector and philanthropist Jack Ginsberg as well as Internationally renowned artist, William Kentridge are some of the creatives that will headline the University of Johannesburg series of events and exhibitions titled Booknesses. The series which will includes a Colloquium as well as associated workshops and walkabouts takes place at UJ between March and May 2017.
BOOKNESSES: Taking Stock of the Book Arts in South Africa is the brainchild of senior lecturer at the Department of Visual Art at UJ David Paton.
