Escape to the Country - Rutland - 2018 - 2019
Escape to the Country - Rutland ...
Rutland is a landlocked county in the East Midlands of England, bounded to the west and north by Leicestershire, to the northeast by Lincolnshire and the southeast by Northamptonshire.
Its greatest length north to south is only 18 miles (29 km) and its greatest breadth east to west is 17 miles (27 km). It is the smallest historic county in England and the fourth smallest in the UK as a whole. Because of this, the Latin motto Multum in Parvo or much in little was adopted by the county council in 1950. It has the smallest population of any normal unitary authority in England. Among the current ceremonial counties, the Isle of Wight, City of London and City of Bristol are smaller in area. The former County of London, in existence 1889 to 1965, also had a smaller area. It is 323rd of the 326 districts in population.
The only towns in Rutland are Oakham, the county town, and Uppingham. At the centre of the county is Rutland Water, a large artificial reservoir that is an important nature reserve serving as an overwintering site for wildfowl and a breeding site for ospreys.
Rutland's older cottages are built from limestone or ironstone and many have roofs of Collyweston stone slate or thatch.
Escape to the Country
Earl of Rutland and Duke of Rutland are titles in the peerage of England held in the Manners family, derived from the historic county of Rutland. The Earl of Rutland was elevated to the status of Duke in 1703 and the titles were merged. The family seat is Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire.
The office of High Sheriff of Rutland was instituted in 1129, and there has been a Lord Lieutenant of Rutland since at least 1559.
By the time of the 19th century it had been divided into the hundreds of Alstoe, East, Martinsley, Oakham and Wrandike.
Rutland covered parts of three poor law unions and rural sanitary districts (RSDs): those of Oakham, Uppingham and Stamford. The registration county of Rutland contained the entirety of Oakham and Uppingham RSDs, which included several parishes in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire – the eastern part in Stamford RSD was included in the Lincolnshire registration county. Under the Poor Laws, Oakham Union workhouse was built in 1836–37 at a site to the north-east of the town, with room for 100 paupers. The building later operated as the Catmose Vale Hospital, and now forms part of the Oakham School.
In 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894 the rural sanitary districts were partitioned along county boundaries to form three rural districts. The part of Oakham and Uppingham RSDs in Rutland formed the Oakham Rural District and Uppingham Rural District, with the two parishes from Oakham RSD in Leicestershire becoming part of the Melton Mowbray Rural District, the nine parishes of Uppingham RSD in Leicestershire becoming the Hallaton Rural District, and the six parishes of Uppingham RSD in Northamptonshire becoming Gretton Rural District. Meanwhile, that part of Stamford RSD in Rutland became the Ketton Rural District.
Oakham Urban District was created from Oakham Rural District in 1911. It was subsequently abolished in 1974.
Rutland was included in the East Midlands General Review Area of the 1958–67 Local Government Commission for England. Draft recommendations would have seen Rutland split, with Ketton Rural District going along with Stamford to a new administrative county of Cambridgeshire, and the western part added to Leicestershire. The final proposals were less radical and instead proposed that Rutland become a single rural district within the administrative county of Leicestershire.

Market Harborough - British Towns VIDEO TOUR (Leicestershire, UK)
Visiting Market Harborough!
-------
Market Harborough is a market town within the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England.
It has a population of 91,461 (2017) and is the administrative headquarters of Harborough District Council. It sits on the Northamptonshire-Leicestershire border. The town was formerly at a crossroads for both road and rail; however the A6 now bypasses the town to the east and the A14 which carries east-west traffic is 6 miles (9.7 km) to the south. Market Harborough railway station is served by East Midlands Trains services on the Midland Main Line with direct services north to Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield and south to London St Pancras. Rail services to Rugby and Peterborough ended in 1966.
Market Harborough is located in an area which was formerly a part of the Rockingham Forest, a royal hunting forest used by the medieval monarchs starting with William I. Rockingham Road takes its name from the forest. The forest's original boundaries stretched from Market Harborough through to Stamford and included the settlements at Corby, Kettering, Desborough, Rothwell, Thrapston and Oundle.
The steeple of St Dionysius' Church rises directly from the street, as there is no churchyard. It was constructed in grey stone in 1300 with the church itself a later building of about 1470. Next to the church stands the Old Grammar School, a small timber building dating from 1614. The ground floor is open, creating a covered market area and there is a single room on the first floor. It has become a symbol of the town. The nearby square is largely pedestrianised and surrounded by buildings of varying styles. The upper end of the High Street is wide and contains mostly unspoiled Georgian buildings.
Market Harborough has two villages within its confines: Great Bowden lies over a hill about a mile from the town centre; Little Bowden is less than half a mile from the town centre. The three centres have largely coalesced through ribbon development and infill, although Great Bowden continues to retain a strong village identity.

Places to see in ( Ashby de la Zouch - UK )
Ashby-de-la-Zouch, often shortened to Ashby, is a small market town and civil parish in North West Leicestershire, England, within the National Forest. It is a sister city with Pithiviers in north-central France and lies close to the Derbyshire border.
Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle was of importance from the 15th to the 17th centuries. In the 19th century the town became a spa town. Before the growth of Coalville, it was the chief town in north-west Leicestershire. In the 19th century its main industries were ribbon manufacture, coal mining, and brickmaking. The town ofAshby-de-la-Zouch was served by the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line of the Midland Railway from 1849. The civil parish includes the hamlets of Shellbrook west of the town and Boundary to its north-west.
Nearby villages include Lount, Normanton le Heath, Smisby, Packington, Donisthorpe, Oakthorpe, Moira, Measham and Coleorton. The towns of Swadlincote, Burton-upon-Trent, Melbourne and Coalville are all within 10 miles (16 km) of Ashby, with the city of Derby 11 1⁄2 miles (19 km) due north. The town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch is situated at the heart of The National Forest and approximately 24 miles (39 km) due south of the Peak District National Park. It lies on the A42 between Tamworth and Nottingham.
Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle was built in the 12th century. The town and castle came into the possession of the Hastings family in 1464 and William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings enhanced its fortifications from 1473. St Helen's Church is Ashby's original Anglican parish church. It is a late 15th-century Perpendicular Gothic building. The Ivanhoe Baths was an 1822 Neo-Grecian building with a Doric façade 200 feet (61 m) long.
The Grade II listed, 19th-century water tower, located in the town's cemetery, on Moira Road, has been approved for conversion to a house, despite protests from English Heritage, Ashby Civic Society, and local residents. In the 19th century Ashby's main industry was leather working. There was also a cotton textile factory and a glue factory. Ashby was surrounded by coalmines but was never a coal mining town itself.
The town was to be served by Ashby Canal from 1804 but the canal never reached Ashby, as it was constructed only to the town of Moira. Ashby had a station on the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line of the Midland Railway from 1845. After the canal was abandoned in stages between 1944 and 1966, British Railways withdrew the passenger service and closed Ashby de la Zouch railway station in September 1964. The railway remains open for freight.
Every May, Ashby holds an arts festival sponsored by the district council. This features local artists, musicians, songwriters, poets, performers, and story tellers. Ashby Statutes, a travelling funfair, is held every September. Instituted by Royal Statute, it was originally a hiring fair, where domestic servants and farmworkers would be hired for the year. During the fair in the 21st century.

Garden Rescue 2019 - Series 4 Southampton
After ten years at sea, working on cruise ships, Morgan has settled in Southampton and bought a house. After fixing up the house, he now needs help with the garden, and he has a healthy £5,000 budget. This sociable bachelor wants a party space where he can entertain his friends. But, while he wants to enjoy his garden, he is less keen to enjoy it with his neighbours, so he also needs some privacy from all the overlooking windows. In a nod to his years at sea, he also wants a water feature in his garden, and as a passionate and proud Welshman, he is determined that his garden has a feeling of his homeland in it. Charlie Dimmock and Harry and David Rich try to come up with a pair of impressive designs for him to choose from.

'It's my right to live here... and I might have more children': Unrepentant father-of-eight immigrant who turned down a 'too small' five-bed council house defends his life on hand-outs
A French migrant who scoffed at the offer of a five-bedroom house has refused to rule out adding to the eight children who have already helped him claim more than £100,000 in benefits.
Arnold Sube is looking to move out of the three-bedroom property where he is currently residing in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, having blown his £15,000 savings on private rent within a few weeks of arriving.
He had initially been renting privately after moving from Paris to study mental health nursing but had his £1,278-per-month rent covered by the local council as soon as he had lived here for the required three-month period.
Luton Borough Council has offered him several five-bedroom properties, but the 33-year-old is holding out for more, despite threats that he might be made homeless if he does not accept an offer soon.
He told The Star: 'I came with £15,000 and I paid by myself but after a few months I applied for a house on benefits.
'I love working. I have been working for the last 13 years. My intention was just to live and study while my family were still in France but my wife couldn’t do it.'
The family received more than £100,000 last year in benefits and while they waited to move into their current home Luton Borough Council housed them for almost four months at the town's £160-per-night Hampton by Hilton hotel.
However, Luton Borough Council this week issued an ultimatum to the couple - either they accept a formal offer of another available four or five bedroom property or make themselves 'intentionally homeless'.
They will then be required to find their own home again through the private rental market.

Leicester City confirmed as Premier League champions
Leicester's remarkable rise from Barclays Premier League relegation strugglers to champions is complete - with a little help from the previous holders.
Reigning champions Chelsea drew 2-2 at home to Tottenham on Monday night to gift their former boss Claudio Ranieri a stunning top-flight title.
-half goals from Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard were enough to finally down second-placed Spurs' charge but the night, and season, belongs to Leicester and their Italian manager.
Ranked as 5,000-1 outsiders at the start of the campaign, doubts were raised over whether Ranieri could stave off a battle against the drop when he was appointed as Nigel Pearson's successor on July 13.
Now, 294 days later, he had the luxury of jetting back home to Rome to have lunch with his 96-year-old mother before returning to the East Midlands a hero.
The 64-year-old, though, was far from the only knight in shining armour at the King Power Stadium this term.
Some of Leicester's unlikely stars were watching events unfold at striker Jamie Vardy's house on an evening of high drama.
Foxes fans have coined the 'Jamie Vardy's having a party' chant this season, and the England striker appeared to be actually throwing one at his Melton Mowbray home.
Pictures from the Daily Mail appeared to show a number of players such as Christian Fuchs, Robert Huth, Wes Morgan and Shinji Okazaki arrive at Vardy's home, while a number of supporters also gathered outside the gates of the house.
Vardy began his senior career at Stocksbridge Park Steels after being rejected by Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager and was playing non-league football for Fleetwood in 2012.
The 29-year-old, who claimed the Football Writers' Association player of the year award on Sunday, has gone on to score 24 goals for club and country this season and looks set to lead the line for England at Euro 2016.
Riyad Mahrez's 17 goals and 11 assists saw him crowned PFA player of the year, capping the Algerian's astonishing accent from the French second division as recently as 2014.
Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, defenders Morgan and Danny Simpson and midfielders N'Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater were also recognised by the voters in the FWA poll.
Winger Marc Albrighton, speaking after Sunday's 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford which edged the Foxes closer to their first-ever top-flight title, said:
We've got that never-say-die attitude. I think that's won us a lot of points this season.
Early on this season you've got the draws at Stoke and Southampton, we were 2-0 down in both of them, and 2-0 down in the home game against Villa.
So that showed our character early in the season and we've continued to do that. We've gone behind at Old Trafford, which is a daunting place. It's a big pitch and the fans are behind them, but credit to the lads, we carried on going, got the equaliser and held on.
Leicester lost 19 games in last season's bid to escape relegation yet, under Ranieri, they have tasted defeat just three times in the Premier League.
They have gone to Manchester City and Tottenham and won, while an unbeaten run since mid-February proved beyond any doubt Ranieri's side had the nerve to finish the job.
Albrighton admitted after the thrilling draw with United that a title success would take time to register.
I don't think it will for a while, the former Aston Villa winger added. It might sink in later on in the summer. If we can wrap up the title it will be such a fantastic achievement and maybe then it will sink in.
Seven years ago, to the day, after the Foxes rounded off their League One title-winning campaign with a 3-0 win away at Crewe, they can now savour the proudest moment in the club's history.2-2

Five And A Penny - You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies - Polydor
Every one of you reading these pages will be able to tell your friends, your family or in fact anyone who is willing to listen about your most memorable record find… “finds” are indelible, they are exciting and it’s the one thing that keeps this record-hunting-thing exciting and fresh.
For me my most memorable find, you’d think would be the first copy of Larry Clinton - Wanted in Three States - on a mantelpiece in Orlando, Florida.. whilst moving from a record room full of “Blue Haze” for a bit of fresher air.. but no my most memorable find, I have to go back 3 years earlier, as a gas fitting delinquent-student of Southfields college, Leicester .
Every lunchtime I spent scouring the market stalls, junk shops, record shop bins for SOUL 45s. I was one of 1000’s of tenagers up ad down the country doing it day in day out. An unquenchable thirst, living in the hope of an HMV- Sapphires, a Stateside “Rufus Lumley” or similar … anything to escape from a job I hated, into the fantasy-land of Northern Soul.
One day I struck not GOLD but certainly something better than what I was used to finding, Blue Stax, TMG Hits, Red Atlantic’s, Action an odd Sue or two..
I found the very first known copy of Five & A Penny, having recognised the rather long title, as the Dana Valery currently setting the scene alight. I couldn’t wait to get it home, that 20 minute train journey to Melton Mowbray seemed like a week.. I raced to my 25 Baldocks Lane, bedroom and dropped the stylus on my new acquisition.
I can tell you now, I had never felt anything like it, perhaps not as elating a “The Salvadors” find in Northern Soul (The Movie) but pretty damn close!
I was DJing at “The Stonehouse” on the A1 at the weekend I couldn’t wait to play my different version of the Dana Valery. Poke was well impressed, as were the other Stamford Boys, I even got the nod from “Snowy” of Doncaster fame, that I had indeed found a winner.. I left the club that night all puffed up and pretty pleased with myself..
Unaware of the addiction it would trigger, leading to my dismissal by British Gas, as I dedicated every possible moment to relive those moments of new vinyl discoveries…
So today I’m happily reminiscing, holding a TOTALLY MINT copy of my first ever worthwhile find!!! Yes, Happy…because i never, ever found another…

in 2018, what are the chances of acquiring this 1965 Northern Soul anthem at this level of condition...?
Very remote, so we are surprise to be able too offer a near perfect example for the 2nd. Time in 12 months, the last copy ended after an cyberspace dog-fight to the death. We imagine this listing will be met with similar fervor.
Putting three of New York's most-creative music-men in one room was always gonna produce something very special. Richie Adams, Jerry Ragovoy & Artie Butler conjure up one of the most instantly recognizable Northern Soul stompers of all time.
Ragovoy summoning up a searing girl-group chorus, Ritchie attacks his own lyrics with screaming enthusiasm; whilst Artie Butler's mastery of the piano, blasts holes in a relentless arrangement. This is an awesome session lifted yet another level by a a strapping saxophone break, then Artie B. is off again, racing into a piano solo with no equals.
THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL !!
.. at it's most compelling... a driving force that has inspired the NS dancefloors of Britain for decades..
How great to hear it again.. and adrenaline rush I thought I'd forgotten, when i found it, repeated when I dropped the stylus on it.
